Hello there fellow imperial guard enthusiasts! This is only my second new topic (thanks warrior fish for directing me to the section) but I have an idea or two for my first force and I'd like to hear what you, more experienced officers, think.

By examining my username you may also infer my love of the space wolves. I would like to combine my two favourite forces. With my imperial guard being the main force and the folk of fenris being their allies.

  • From a lore point of view I'm thinking that the guardsmen are perhaps the skilled bondsmen of the wolves, perhaps garmites or something, (they're among the few imperials who don't use slaves and that which I like) and they are working along side the wolves who are their allies.
  • From a practical perspective when I get a guard force up and running I'll only need a small number of wolves to get them playing and they'll buff the points value nicely. Also The new guard are not long released whereas I'll be waiting sometime for the new wolves.
  • From a hobby stand point I'd like a sort of Fenrisian colour scheme for my force and why not ally them to the progenitors of the colours? Means I'll only have to buy similar paints.
  • Also from a gameplay standpoint I think they'll compliment each other nicely with the guard as the shield using ranged attacks (perhaps behind an aegis) and the wolves can be the spear tip. Also I'll finally get to use that Ragnar Blackmane model someone gifted me

So what do you think peeps? Solid idea? Please let me know biggrin.png Acknowledgement, corrections and constructive criticism welcome.

and manymore in the space wolf section might be of use for fluff etc

that being said, how far are you willing to take this allied force?1000 pts? 2000pts? more?

atm space wolves work best in my opinion when droppodding so you could build a force fit to support this. on the other side space wolves on foot make a mighty counterattack force, keeping your gunline safe!

Does this mean your Guard will have a nice snow or urban colour scheme? I like your idea, Marines work well with Guard as the complement the elite/numbers and CC/fire power of each other nicely so Wolves will make great allies.

It sounds like you want a good infantry core which is a solid start to any list, surely this also includes some Leman Russ tanks in honour of the Primarch they are named after?

I think this sounds like a really cool idea, can't wait to see you make a start :)

Might be worth getting hold of some Empire Flagellant heads or Chaos Marauders for that more wild look common with Space Wolves as well as mixing in spare SW parts. And whilst it would obviously depend on your opponents, I see no reason why you couldn't proxy a pack of wolves as rough riders - or even mount some guard up on those larger wolves the Space Wolves ride.

(Still not 100% sure how to reply to specific comments so please bear with me)

Hendrik: I think I'm going to take it as far as feels natural, I think I'd like to take it to 2000 points or around there. I was thinking about using the wolves in a counter attack sense with the gunline. Maybe some longfangs to bolster the firepower of the gunline and then perhaps some bloodclaws or grey hunters or maybe a mix of the two in the speartip (recently read horus rising/false gods so I'll be using this phrase a lot) I never thought about the drop pod list, might come into play as the list expands :D thanks for the ideas

Warriorfish: Yeah I love infantry! Weird thing I've always had. The colour scheme is something I've been thinking of, could you link me a few suggestions? Oh of course, the Leman Russ was the first thing that kind of linked the guard and the wolves in my head and it's gotta go in there :D

Dark apostle: Pretty cool ideas for customisation :D might look into those

here's a quick mock up list then:

-company command sqd: some heavy weapon and camo cloaks

80pts-ish

-platoon A:

PCS: heavy weapon of choice

inf sqd: heavy weapon of choice

inf sqd: heavy weapon of choice

170 pts ish

-platoon B:

PCS: heavy weapon of choice

inf sqd: heavy weapon of choice

inf sqd: heavy weapon of choice

170 pts ish

-wyvern squadron: 2   130 pts

-leman russ of choice  200pts ish

this should make 750 pts max and gives a solid base to start the force with. now it's important to include the needed push the wolves give.since the maelstrom mission means you'll need a mobile force this is done best by the wolves. here's a mock up while still staying within the allies matrix:

-rune priest 100 pts

-grey hunter pack: 10, 2x plasmagun, wolf standard, rhino 205pts if i recall correctly

-grey hunter pack: 10, 2x plasmagun, wolf standard, rhino 205pts

-long fang pack: heavy weapon of choice

this makes for a solid firebase, while having 2 very mobile units. together this shoudl make a +1000 pts army. you still lack AT however, and some more mobile units. i'dd include some sentinels, landspeeders or swiftclaws to support the mobile force to bring this force to 1500 pts. or you could take another leman russ.

Back when I was playing SW, I used to run SW with first IG allies and then with the Armoured Battlegroup to get access to Leman Russ spam. It worked like a charm. What you really want, no matter which detachment you put SW in, is Long Fangs with either ML or LC. They will go a long way in helping you deal with armour. They are also more efficient than their IG counterparts.

You should be having a lot of AC fire in your IG detachment to deal with AV12 or less but leave the bigger tanks to big guns or SW.

The best place to start for camo is real life, get an idea for the generic colours you might like then play around. I don't think many here have such themes though but maybe it would be worth creating a camo pattern topic to accumulate them for situations like this. For reference, greys blues and black are good snow and urban camouflage colours.

Aha! Thank you sir! Yeah I was definitely thinking of a kind of space wolf bluey grey with a sligtly darker blue or grey with maybe a white or really light blue trim perhaps. I'll refine it closer to the time. Thanks very much mate :D

Oh no, Russ definitely wants his sons' feet on the ground. But he also was a huge supporter of the human soldiers and may well have intended for the guard to deal with the chaff (heldrakes, razorwings...) while the Wolves got to the good old fashioned hand to hand.
