Joasht
Greetings all!Starting an Astra Militarium army, and am contemplating Pask in an Executioner, with a Punisher in his squadron, and possibly a Vanquisher to help with some tank busting. My question is: What hull/sponson weapons do you usually give your tanks? Do not feel limited to the tanks I mentioned above; please feel free to comment on your favourite type of tank is, and what you usually give it (even your Chimera's/Tauroxes). Thanks! Ldorte
The last game I played I had 3 leman russ battle tanks with hull mounted lascannon and heavy bolter sponsons. Made them fairly deadly against the grey knights they were facing, the tank commander was the last man standing in my army at the end of the game on turn 7 with over 430pts of kills to his name, including a land raider (which he managed to one shot) most of the enemy hq and a couple of other models. For versatility that seems to be the best combo as it covers most bases. In the case of the punisher I would go triple heavy bolter just for the hilarity of 29 shots from a single tank, heavy stubber as well if you fancy being really silly :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292960-hullsponson-weapons/#findComment-3729334 Share on other sites
Seahawk
Vanquishers get the lascannon and multimeltas for pure AT work. Exterminators/Eradicators get three heavy bolters and a heavy stubber for AI work. Executioners get the lascannon and plasma cannons for AHI work. Everything else gets the lascannon and heavy bolters for general purpose duties. Chimeras always get one heavy flamer, sometimes two, and a heavy stubber when I have the points. Most other hulls get heavy flamers when possible. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292960-hullsponson-weapons/#findComment-3729335 Share on other sites
Frater Cornelius
I avoid sponsons and instead save point for that extra tank. MSU is starting to become popular, mobility is a must these days. Chances are good that the enemy will position himself in a way where only 1 sponsons and their hull nor the second sponsons can fire, either due to angle or due to being blocked by another target or terrain. After many tried I just scrapped the sponson upgrades for 24"-36" tanks and got myself a 4th Russ instead. On long ranged tanks one can upgrade hull weapon for LC for sure, but there are no sponsons that reach beyond 36". YMMV. WarriorFish
Good advice in here, sponsons are less worthwhile on ordnance Russes but are never completely useless. Personally I prefer to only put them on direct fire tanks if at all, keeps them cheaper and all Russes are potent enough with just their stock weaponry if required :) Tank commanders - Pask especially - are very good, but their squadron needs to be well thought out for effectiveness. Otherwise I like to keep things cheap but effective, so most Russes are without sponsons generally. Hull heavy flamers are a particular favourite of mine, makes attacking in CC more dangerous for the grand total of 0 points :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292960-hullsponson-weapons/#findComment-3729444 Share on other sites
Emperors Immortals
Im new to AM but ive been thinking of adding plasma or MM to my Eradicator, seems like they would add pretty well to mid field advancing element for my army. Always take HF where I can on a Russ thats designed to stay with Infantry - theyve helpes in my last game a hell of a lot! That was before I bought the IA;Guard book - now im saving all those points for more delicious gun platforms, Sabres and carriages. :D Basically, keep it cheap and keep it lean - Im planning on following the WarriorFish and Immerstrum's advice. Seahawk
Though weapon-destroyed happens less now, I find sponsons worthwhile for lowering the chance of losing the main gun. march10k
LRBT: decent default choice, kinda right down the middle in price and capabilities. No sponsons. Executioner: only as pask's wingman, needs preferred enemy to avoid killing itself. Plasma sponsons, lascannon hull mount. Exterminator: Horrible waste of a HS choice. If you want autocannons, that's why you have guardsmen and sentinels. Eradicator: Ignoring cover is great, and so is the low price. Since the low points cost is part of the attraction, no upgrades. Demolisher: Accept no substitute. AP2 and is insta-kills T5. I try to field two in every game. No upgrades, they're expensive enough! Vanquisher: Not a fan of BS3 Vanqs, but they're my first choice for tank commanders, including my preferred warlord, Pasquisher. Lascannon hull mount. Not sold on the multimelta sponsons, I want him buried in a corner, maximizing his range advantage. 24" is too close! Punisher: Awesome firepower, the consensus tank for Pask. With Pask, it's a tank killer, so you want the multimelta sponsons and the lascannon. Any other punisher should have three heavy bolters for 29 S5 shots. minigun762
Why not use heavy bolters on the Executioner? Cheaper and safer and you're still going to wreck heavy infantry squads. But now you have some added bite against light infantry. CoffeeGrunt
Given that you're unlikely to kill the whole squad, I've been taking Heavy Bolters on my Eradicator. Still only 160pts and allows me to mop up those last 'Crons that survived the initial blast.
