Brainstorming a third DIY Chapter

Recommended Posts

I'm contemplating an idea for another Chapter of Astartes.  I came up with this idea while I was reading through the Liber Cluster post.  I'm wondering if my fellow Liberites think its plausible for a Chapter to elevate Apothecaries if they are in a more natural environment.  My idea is that Apothecaries play a triple role in the Chapter as Leaders, Chaplains and Apothecaries.  This would come about due to the Chapter creating its fortress monastery out of a gigantic tree that is still alive.  Also the Chapter cult will focus on veneration of the Emperor through the huge trees (think 10 times the size of Redwoods) and a connection of the biggest tree and the Emperor.  The biggest tree on the planet would be the fortress monastery.  Tell me what you think.

Reminds me of the Avatar movie, personally. I think you'd have to work pretty hard to make them seem more serious, because immediately there's going to be some reader bias towards thinking it's a bit silly or frou-frou.

Usually a chapter's beliefs and cult will still focus on death and warfare, because that's what their life is. Flipping the script is a heck of a challenge. You up for it?

What you're proposing makes me think instantly of Yggdrasil. Not sure if you wish to keep the Norse aspects, but I've never heard of an idea like this before smile.png I must admit that if the Fortress Monastery was made out of a living tree, it would have to be huge! Perhaps there is a legend amongst the natives that the Fortress Monastery is a tree that was smaller in times past but when the Chapter arrived, it grew and grew and grew. They took this to be a favour of the Emperor and have venerated the site since. The truth could be that there is a massive tree, but the Chapter decided to build the Fortress Monastery around it to protect it from some unknown threat, but made it appear that the tree was growing. Feel free to take or disregard the above smile.png

In any case, it's a truly new and unique idea, at least to me! thumbsup.gif

Great idea, I think. It make take a little grimdark infusion to cement it in the setting, but it seems totally viable to me.

Perhaps the twist is that the tree isn't all that it seems. Whether the Chapter know this or not is another matter... smile.png

I totally didn't think about the relation to the norse myths.  I was thinking more that the tree grew after the Emperor touched it when he visited the planet during the Great Crusade or so the natives and Astartes believe.  So I will be starting on an outline and start fleshing out the Lords of Dusk as well.  Also on the to do list is to tweak the Hounds combat doctrine a little, but good news is I finished my second ETL vow just need to take pics.  Thank you all for the quick responses.

That could work. Who knows how many planets the Emperor has visited in the past? smile.png

I've been doing some research and I'm formulating the grim darkness of this chapter.  It will involve their rites, the trees, and the legend of the Emperor's visit to their home world.  I've been contemplating making their librarians part librarian and part chaplain.  I'm also trying to work out names.  So far I'm thinking of Tree Wardens, but I'm not sure I'm going to stick with it.  When I start the IA I will post a link in  this post and my sig.

Sons of Jubokko.

Being an aficionado of most things Japanese, I quite like this happy.png If you was to explore this further, the Jubokko tree could be so large after a massive battle (the tree absorbing so much blood it grew to gargantuan proportions) The natives took this to be a portent from the Emperor. Perhaps the Chapter was originally a space bound one until they found this world and after the battle, they took it for their own (heavy losses or a grant giving them settlement rights), carving the Fortress Monastery out of the tree. The twist could be that it wasn't a sign from Him on Earth, but something far more sinister. Does the Chapter know this?

Not sure if this is an avenue you want to go down though smile.png

I have a problem with the idea of a fortress-monastery in a tree, namely, how will it endure orbital bombardment? Or side-effects of orbital bombardment, like induced seismicity or "manmade earthquakes"?

If you put the fortress-monastery UNDER a tree- specifically, kilometers beneath the soil and deep within the bedrock, so it'll be sheltered from all but the most powerful bunker-busters or the most intense orbital bombardment- I'll have no more complaints.

I'd say that if the tree is big enough to house a space marine chapter, it's big enough for Navy-grade void shields. ;)

Also on the matter of specialists - I really like the idea from the first post about having chaplain-apothecaries (more so than I like the idea of chaplain-librarians - the two offices aren't really made to be mixed, imho). Individuals that lead the chapter spiritually and through biological purity.
