CommandPoint
I've been stuck trying to work on scenery as I can't decide which material would be best to base my terrain on. I've made various pieces of scenery in the past but always been let down by the bases.I'd like it all to be uniform, so until I work this out no terrain is gaining any progress. I've been meaning to research and inquire about this for quite some time What do people use and prefer?I personally am looking for something slim and sturdy. Something that you could base a building on, or could be the general base for a few pieces of scatter terrain. I want to try and avoid having a big height difference between my table top and the base of a piece of scenery. Any advice would be appreciated but I'm in the UK, so any comparative links would also be appreciated. Thanks Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292998-basing-terrain/ Share on other sites
David Ravel
I did some on corks, some on plastic or plasticard and some on cardboard. Given the description of what you need, I would say : go with plastic. Plasticard, if taken very slim, will not be sturdy enough (as with cork sheet and cardboard). I tend to always use cork just because it gives a nice finish on the ground, especially for building. Adeptus
What you want is MDF. Thin sheets that don't warp, are cheap to buy, and sturdy enough for your needs. Kierdale
Nice work there, SW1. What's it made of? Now put some socks on, you'll catch a cold :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292998-basing-terrain/#findComment-3730765 Share on other sites
SW1
Foamboard with timber slats from a blind chopped up into squares, plastic square matting, texture plasticard and random tubes/straws/superglue lids/wire. The slats were one of those items the wife swore I'd never use and ended up being the perfect size and thickness. You'd think it would be a bit prone to damage due to the foamboard but that's only accessible from the bottom and the playing surface has either timber or plastic covering it so it'll loose the paint job well before it gets damaged. Need to spray it with a varnish before using it which I've still not done. CommandPoint
I am thinking Plasticard for all the smaller scatter terrain will work well. Corkboard seems a bit flimsy and brittle to me. Do you mount it on something else, and do you coat / seal it? CommandPoint
Do you mean something like this ... No :) (but I've seen them feet before :D ) I need something simpler and more uniform, but that is a fine base you have there. I need to start thinking of good ways to fill the inside floor of buildings too :) What you want is MDF. Thin sheets that don't warp, are cheap to buy, and sturdy enough for your needs. 3mm or 3.2mm does seem the popular choice :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292998-basing-terrain/#findComment-3737106 Share on other sites
David Ravel
For corks, it depends on the size of what you're doing. It's still fragile I agree, but it can be okay if you build your stuff on it right/if you put something beneath (like platic or hard cardboard). Grotsmasha
2 or 3mm plasticard will be plenty sturdy. Cheers, Jono Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/292998-basing-terrain/#findComment-3737116 Share on other sites
SW1
Lol ... I really need to trim that pic down at some point. The laptop has died so trying to crop pics in photobucket on a phone is not easy. If you want more of a plain look I'd go for plasticard probably 3mm thick as it's not as likely to warp as thinner stuff can do.
