Bikes: what models to use (and why)?

Recommended Posts

No different than a Deimos Predator vs the standard GW kit.  Some of the iconography may be a bit off, but otherwise?  Just the production from different forgeworlds.  Anyone who gets worked up over the difference is just silly, especially considering that there isn't even a GC-era attack bike model, so all we have is the GW plastic attack bike which matches their bikes...

Personally, I struggle to see a use for Outriders.  This may not be the fault of the unit, I'm not very good with fast attack stuff.  I'm more of a straight-up stand-and-fight kind of player.  I do well with gunlines and counter-assaults.  To me, though, they look terribly expensive for what are just fast bolter-holders.  You can give them TL plasmaguns for exorbitant prices.  The flamer/melta options aren't worth it, IMO.  Maybe they're good for scout + meltabombs?  That's cheap and potentially effective.

I would be really afraid of the squad just breaking and running off the table.  The increased fall back distance from bikes + base Ld 8 (must buy a sergeant upgrade) + no vexilla option + low model count = not comfortable.

I like the idea of attack bikes with autocannons.  Fast, relentless light anti-tank in the least-utilized FOC slot.  The same trouble as above with low Ld (and no sergeant upgrade possible), increased fall back distance, and low model count, but the autocannon loadout is pretty cheap.

I like using mkII Crusade Armour and just don't think it'd work with FW's design. I'm inclined to use Scout Bikes but with converted mkII marines as riders. The Horus Heresy ccg (or Collected Visions if you're not familiar) has images of bike sa lot like this.

I've got quite a few bikes needing some sorting out and was looking at converting some to look a bit closer to the FW ones for HQ's and such.

I reckon they'll be a fun unit to run but not sure about their effectiveness. However if they are ran as IH's the boost to toughness could be very interesting.

I would actually think about fielding attack bikes if they were more like the Tauros than some stupid bike with a sidecar.  I know that bikes are supposed to be justified under 'rule of cool' and all, but I just don't find them cool.  I have no idea how the Tauros goes together or if you could squeeze marines in it, though, so no idea about any possible conversions.

What are people opinions on the 2 different types of models, and how to use them?

I'm not a fan of the older, boxy GW bikes. Never have been, never will be. The FW ones, on the other hand? Distilled awesomesauce. I would personally use them for, well, every bike unit I might want to use (the fact that I don't own any yet notwithstanding).
