Redwunzgofasta's Redwunz (Blood Angelz)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Recently I foolishly tried to start a non-Space Marine project (filthy Orkses). It fell flat on it's face when I wasn't satisfied with my ability to paint gretchin skin and I realised I should be painting mighty power armour! I have a 2500 points Salamanders army but wanted a new direction so I thought I'd go nostalgic and paint some Blood Angels. Blood Angels are the classic chapter for me. The 2nd edition box cover artwork stole my imagination as a youngster and I've been hooked on 40k ever since. I have the limited edition Games Day Blood Angel captain from that artwork but didn't want to take a dangerous risk by practicing my colour scheme on him! I've painted one tactical marine and will be setting to work on an assault marine soon.

Before anyone points it out I know I've spliced old and new Blood Angels colour schemes, but I just went with the look I wanted to go for. I wanted a nice eye watering yellow aquilla but to drop the black pauldron trim of the classic scheme. I'm pretty happy with how the first guy turned out. I've decided to start slowly as I usually end up trying to paint too many models at once and killing a project before it takes off. So here he is, Blood Angel one, hope you like...

Oh my. That is one fine looking Blood Angel.

With painting this good, I really don't think anyone's gonna mind you mixing schemes! happy.png

Any idea how many of these guys you're planning on painting?

Haha thanks! That's an encouraging first comment.

Cheers, I'm glad my guys will fit somewhere in the Blood Angels canon! I'm actually going to commit heresy in the painting times that we live in and not weather my marines. I do enjoy it when other people weather theirs but I'm a bit of a neat freak and I think trying to add weathering to my guys would drive me insane. I'd probably obsess to an unhealthy level over getting it 'right' wacko.png

Thanks! I'm planning on a full Blood Angels army but I'm going to focus on one guy at a time. I've wiffled on a lot of projects because I've gone too big too soon. Progress will be slow but I think I've found a scheme that will keep my interest over the long term. There's also scope for keeping things fresh with death company and dreadnoughts and tanks. Not to mentions chaplains! I'm really looking forward to painting the chaplain from the reclusiam command squad kit. He'll eventually lead my army alongside the Games Day captain.

Thanks for the encouraging words, I'll try my best to keep it up!

Thank you very much, I can't really claim a lot of credit for the clean look on the red armour, as the work in progress pictures show below. The red is all arbrushed on except for a 'pin' wash (a great technique I only discovered very recently) and two line highlights.

The red is an airbrush undercoat of Vallejo Surface Primer German Red Brown (amazing product, goes on so nicely!) followed by a few thin layers of Mephiston Red airbrushed at a 45 degree angle (much harder to get through the airbrush successfully sad.png). Then it's a pin wash of Army Painter Strong Tone and two line highlights, Wild Rider Red then Ungor Flesh.

I've changed some colours and a couple of techniques (out of laziness) but I've basically ripped off this tutorial, which was great to follow due to the really helpful pictures:

My better half has been away all weekend so when not playing Titanfall and ignoring the washing up I decided to start work on my first assault marine. He's very work in progress and the pictures show how flat the base colours are until the magic pin wash and highlights! The light is fading here so sorry about the blurry pics.

Grandmaster damion, A D-B, Lord Janos

Thanks so much for the great comments!

I've managed to finish the assault marine's body except for the aquilla which still needs to be highlighted.

I've finally got my assault marine finished! I've doubled the size of my army and it feels great haha. I'm happy with how he turned out, although he nearly got thrown out of the window once or twice when I was working on his helmet. I've never really painted yellow before and I've quickly discovered it's in the same category as gold in terms of difficulty to paint! There's a lot of light hitting the model on this photo and I think it makes the base look a bit crap but here he is...

Wow that red is beautiful, as others have said they have a very old school look but keeping in with the newer (darker) feel of painting, that yellow helm is awesomely done too....but brother....

Battle damage.... Lol I used to be a neat freak with my painting......then....I did my scythes.....all down hill from there.....you'll never wish to see a clean marine again lol
