Small force for Astra Militarum

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

i just bought the SW codex with a view to re-doing my 2000pts of Sable Claws, an isolated great company painted black.

Anyway, are there any particular recommendations for a small (250 pts) force to accompany a Leman Russ heavy list?

Im thinking about a wolf priest and grey hunter squad to start, but are there any combos I should really be looking at?

Are you looking for allied detachment, or just 250 points to throw into an unbound list?

For allies, 250 is a tad on the small side, I'd push it to 300 at least and take Hunters in a Pod/Rhino and a Biomancy RP, then use them as a distraction/speed bump to protect your IG tanks.

For unbound, I'd take the 'standard' 7 man WG pod squad form Logan armies. 7WG, 4 in PA with combi weapons, 2 TDA with storm bolters and axes, 1TDA with heavy flamer and PF/Chainfist, in a drop pod. Pick something scary in the enemy army, drop these guys near it, and ruin its day.

Yes ts for a detachment of allies. Looking through the book again, I'm bumping it up to 500 pts with a view to a full 2000.

I'm loving the look of wolfpriest and GH but the plasma has me worried about missing out on a good charge, though I suppose counter attack would help me recueve it better, hmmmm.

I really don't want the wolfriders and I am thinking if a lascannon kongfang pack to keep in back. If I ran an ogryn squad as a mobile aegis, I can commit them for a final charge and get better shots, hopefully.

Any other tips you can think of for AM? I'm pretty excited.

To be honest, I wouldn't both with Long Fangs, as their niche is more than ably filled by your IG primary.

I wouldn't be too worried about not getting the charge with plasma hunters. You should be using the Wolves as interference and distraction form your IG guns and tanks, so getting charged isn't the end of the world. Plus if the charge is really needed, just use your pistols. Or take meltas/flamers.

One other thing to consider is what I tend to consider the darling of this sub forum, the Lone Wolf with TDA, Chainfist and Storm Shield. Makes a pretty good distraction unit that will take a surprising amount of firepower, and if the enemy neglects killing him, can do plenty of damage.

As far as the Guard, they remain pretty simple. Leman Russ, Hellhounds and infantry and you can't really go wrong. The Wyvern form the new dex is pretty solid as well.

I would seriously suggest Lone Wolf as Leif has suggested, as well as some Skyclaws. They are very mobile, and with a Wolf Priest with an oath of war against infantry, they will tear your enemies troops up.

My Suggested 500 points of allied wolves would be:

Wolf Priest With Jump Pack - 125

5 x Grey Hunters with 1x Meltagun - 80

Lone Wolf - TDA, Power Fist, Storm Shield - 80

10 x Skyclaws, 1 meltagun, 1 powerfist - 215

Just my preference, let me know what you think

why not using : LoneWolf with TDA,Storm Shield, Stormbolter MoW and MeltaBomb.  no codex at hands but about 80pts or so

This way you have some firepower while walking up the field an MoW in close combat, might not be as effective against  a Tank but will tear thrue infantry if left alone. He wont catch any tank most of the time anyway.

You'd be surprised. I haven't used Lone Wolves frequently, but when I have, they can certainly catch tanks, if they survive. Its quite easy to overlook a lone model, especially if you hide him in terrain.

Not that the build you proposed is bad, although I'd still be inclined to run with such a LW, as a single storm bolter won't do that much, compared with another few inches territory.
