Joasht's Yet-Unnamed Regiment (Updated 15 July: Wyvern)

Greetings all!

This "regiment" all started as a single Chimera I've had for some time hidden in my store room that I decided to paint up as an experimental piece for weathering. In the past, my models have typically always looked "clean", but I figured I might as well learn a thing or two about weathering.

Turns out, I *really* enjoyed painting "outside the lines", and breaking away from my usual techniques. Also, it was an excuse to finally start a Guard army!

Anyway this is my first IG (/AM) model and my first go at weathering. I'm jokingly dubbing it "Gritticus Maximus", for obvious reasons.

Hopefully, if time/real life/mods permit, this will be yet another pseudo-blog post on this forum.

Thanks!

Dis is gud stuff, we need more blogs on this forum. Soon I will open my own with my totally insane project probably unique to this internet :D

Until then I will follow this one amongst the others around here. They have yet to disappoint.

Thanks for the kind words!

Prep'ing a Leman Russ Eradicator as we speak, hopefully I'll get it done in the near future.

I like it, although I am somewhat upset by the lack of trim details like the aquilla being in a different color.

I was torn between:

1) Leaving it as it currently is.

2) Painting it (was thinking a grey aquila and beige parchment), but:

a) Weathering it to tie it all into the rest of the tank, OR

b) Making the parchment look brand new.

Thoughts?

Looknig good there mate!

What technique did you use and paints for that weathering?

Mostly just sponging and good old acrylics. I understand that most armor modellers prefer oils for painting/weathering vehicles, but oil paints tend to use pretty toxic solvents; and I paint in an air conditioned environment. Also, I don't really want to run out and buy a bunch of oil paints.

Very nice, and perhaps the best use of that random bit I've seen outside of kit bashes. After all these years I've never found out what the damn thing is for :P

A very auspicious start to your Guard force, the Emperor will surely be watching your progress as closely as us ;)

Was just about to ask that myself actually. What is the point if that 'random' bit? It's on all kits that use the Chimera chassis but for the life of me I cannot see a use for it in any of the instructions but occasionally it pops up randomly on models.

Just wondered why it is even in the kit?

And that is one lovely tank Joasht! Can't wait to see your progress and welcome to the guard :D

That plate was used on several land speeders for a 5th edition marine army of mine... I really like the look you have going there man and would love to see the grey aquila.

I can appreciate the desire for non-toxic paints in a contained environment. I think your sponging is pretty dag on great. Tracks are great and your paint is smooth... looking forward to seeing more!

This is a nice collection of sexy, sexy weathering work. Any chance of a few tips for us weathering noobs on how you achieve it? I'm personally a fan of mixing in other metallic shades for some "pop," though, but you've done a nice, subtle job of the Plasma Cannons, and I like your lens work on the main hatch.

I've never seen anyone put that plate there

That plate confuses the hell out of me, because I dislike having spare parts that look important when I finish building something. It ended up being used as track guards on my Banewolf, but I'm trying to think whether it would work for an open-topped Chimera setup...hmmm...

Excellent work again, the lenses are great - green and blue go very well together (I'm not biased at all). I agree that you must give us a detailed tutorial on how you do the weathering, it's really too good not to!

Thanks for the replies!

To be honest this Leman Russ is my second ever model I've weathered, so I'm just about as new as anyone else haha

I plan to, at some point in the near future (hopefully), open a Youtube channel with tutorials, so I'll put that up there once I've refined the "recipe".

By the way, this is my 1,500 point draft list. All C&C would be much appreciated!

  • 2 weeks later...

That is one gorgeous paintjob on the Wyvern, love your work on the screen. Is that a transfer or freehand?

Freehand :)

Looks like freehand to me, as if the model wasn't good enough tongue.png Great stuff, when do you tackle a Baneblade? laugh.pngmsn-wink.gif

Probably not any time soon, purely because I don't intend to field one any time soon.
