Epimetheus13
I love the resilence of drop podding Azrael + Veterans around an objective and getting 4++ and FNP thru Azzy's warlord trait. BUT I'm looking for a new way to field Vets that doesnt require Azzy to babysit, costs fewer points, and is still effective anywhere on the table (not just around an objective). I want to maximize how cheaply Vets can take a 3++ storm shield, but I'm stumped on how to arm them. The way I see it, I can go shooty or melee. Power fist would be awesome (since its specialist weapon anyways, so who cares about losing the extra A because of storm shield), but at that points cost per model, I feel I'd be better off with DW Knights. Power axes are cheaper and still nasty, but I fear still too expensive to have a whole unit of them. So I'm left to go shooty. I love the idea of hiding a lascannon behind a 3++, but what should the other Vets take? Plaspistols are lethal but too short-ranged. Combi-plas? Storm bolters? Or am I best sticking to plain-jane bolters, spending the points saved on the Bolter Banner, and using the Vets during the game to break the enemy attack (almost like a living Aegis Defence Line)? Any tips would be most appreciated! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293185-how-to-arm-storm-shield-vets/ Share on other sites
lost_angel
A power axe and a couple of combi weapons (plas or melta depending on preference) would probably be your best bet. It's be a great excuse to use the forgeworld breacher kit too. Azoriel
+1 on the combi weapon idea. I've long thought of having a unit of vets with two or three marines equipped with a combi weapon and a storm shield. That way, you don't need your more expensive specialists to tank low AP wounds for the squad (i.e. the guy with the storm shield and power fist/thunder hammer), and you'd get slightly more functionality than a model with storm shield and bolter alone. Space Truckin
Sounds like a cool idea to model up a Stormwing Vets with shield for ship to ship boarding. would be a welcome candidate for a dataslate :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293185-how-to-arm-storm-shield-vets/#findComment-3734307 Share on other sites
Xyon
I'd agree with the combi weapon idea, and if you still wanted to use the bolter banner I believe the boltgun part of the combi weapon can still become salvo 4? Yep they do. My vet squad has two storm shields, they just have bolters. 2 X Storm Shields + bolters 2 X Melta guns 5 X Combi melta 1 X Multi melta In a drop pod DM Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293185-how-to-arm-storm-shield-vets/#findComment-3734565 Share on other sites
Epimetheus13
Looks like I'll be modelling some combi-meltas. Thanks all! Also: the Forgeworld breacher kit looks lovely, but I wonder if similar shields can't be had for less. I'm thinking of using the shields from Bretonnian Men-at-Arms, although those shields come with the arms modelled onto the shield; may need some cutting/modelling to make 'em look more marine-y.
