Draigowing2.0: Mordrak-Inquisitors bomb

There is no such thing as a unit upgrade (or upgrade unit) in 40k.

We must be playing different games. The copy I own of the GK codex lets me upgrade a Librarian to PML3, upgrade a Paladin to an Apothecary, upgrade one GKT Justicar to Thawn, and to upgrade Grand Master Mordrak by adding Ghost Knights to his unit before the game (his rules even refer to him as being the unit's upgrade character when Ghost Knights are present). I guess my 5th edition codex is different from whatever edition codex you are using.

In another book, Arjac Rockfist is a unit upgrade for one pack of Wolf Guard, Lukas the Trickster is an upgrade for one pack of Blood Claws, as seen in their unit entries.

read straight from the codex:

Mordrak and the Ghost Knights form a unit, with Mordrak acting as an upgrade character unit such point as the ghost knights are slain, at which point he reverts to being a single-model unit in his own right.

(further down, mid second paragraph)

Place a new Ghost Knight within coherency of Mordrak's unit - it joins Mordrak's unit to all intents and purposes.

this tells me that if you take Mordrak on his own...you can give him TGS, as he is not with his ghost knights start of turn 1...and is treated as a single-model unit, NOT as a unit of ghost knights...not sure how the rule works when the knights are added later though...but it can be done...make that mordrak bomb as big as you like with inquisitors :)

Because otherwise, by that logic, if you don't buy at least one ghost, he is no unit and can't spawn any from wounds, as it says they join his unit

Are you saying that a single model can't be a unit? Because a unit can definitely consist of one model. Or did I misunderstand what you said?
