Hey guys, just a quick batrep for a game I had today with a Raven Guard vs. Sisters of Battle game !

Pictures are coming (sometimes !)

The scenario

Maelstrom of War #5, 3 Tactical objectives each that are hidden from the enemy, Hammer & Anvil deployment.

3 objectives were positionned in the Space Marines deployment zone, 1 in the No Man's Land and 2 in the Sisters of Battle deployment zone. Of course, we rolled for deployment zones after placing the objectives. I won the roll-off and decided to deploy on this board.

The board

Ruined city battleground with 4 large ruined buildings and 2 trenches systems (counting as ruins) that stream across the board in a lightning pattern from short table edge to short table edge. 1 in the Space Marines deployment zone, 1 in the no man's land.

The forces

Ghost Warriors (Raven Guard Chapter Tactics)

Captain - Jump Pack, Teeth of Terra, Power Fist, Auspex (Warlord)

Librarian - ML2, Force Sword

Command Squad - 3 Vets with Melta+Boltguns, 2 Vets with Stormshields & melta bombs

9 Tactical Marines, Melta, Vet with combi melta & Lightning Claw & Melta Bomb, Rhino

9 Tactical Marines, Plasmagun, Vet with combi-plasma & Lightning Claw

5 Scouts, 4 Sniper rifles, Heavy Bolter with Hellfire Shells, Camo Cloaks

6 Devastators, 4 Missile Launchers

6 Assault Marines, 2 Flamers, Veteran with Power Sword

Venerable Dreadnought, Multi Melta, Heavy Flamer

Whirlwind

Stormtalon with Skyhammer Missile Launcher

Sisters of Battle

Inquisitor (3 Servo Skulls) (Warlord)

Saint Celestine

2 x 9 Sisters squad with Flamer & Heavy Flamer, Rhino

1 x 5 Sisters squad with 2 meltas, Immolator with Twin Linked Multi Melta

3 x 5 Dominions with 2 meltas, Immolator with Twin Linked Multi Melta

3 x Exorcists

The deployment

He deployed the 3 Servo Skulls in the No man's land, effectively preventing me from Scouting up.

He won the roll off to deploy first. He kept his 3 Dominion Squads in Reserve for Outflanking.

He deployed his 3 Exorcists deep in the board, 2 of them holding the objectives, one to each side of his deployment zone.

He deployed the Immolator Sisters squad on the left side of his deployment zone.

Saint Celestine and the last 2 Rhinos deployed next to the Exorcist closer to the No man's land.

He rolled and got the Princeps of Deceit warlord trait.

I deployed the Devastators in the back left of my deployment zone in a trench on a hill, able to cover most of the battle field and holding an objective

Command Squad + Librarian deployed behind a building holding an objective at the edge of my deployment zone.

Whirlwind deployed in the open holding the objective on the back right of my deployment zone.

Tactical squad with the plasmagun deployed on the front left of my deloyment zone behind a building.

Venerable Dreadnought deployed behind the Tactical squad in cover of a trench.

Assault squad with the Captain deployed in the open between the Command Squad and the Tactical squad, at the edge of my deployment zone roughly at the center of the table.

Tactical squad with the meltagun held in reserve for Outflanking.

Scouts deployed at the top level of the highest building at the edge of my deployment zone for sniping galore !

I rolled for Biomancy and got Warp Speed, Lifeleech as well as Smite and Force.

Devastators were pinned by his warlord trait furious.gif

First turn

Pretty uneventful first turn. I drew to grab 1 objective that I controlled as well as the card giving me D3 VP for controlling 3 objectives and the one giving 3 VPs for controlling all the objectives. I didn't discard that one right off the bat and it was a big mistake because there was no way I could grab all of them and I could have drawn more favourable objectives next turn.

The Devastators managed to cause a Shaken result on the Immolator with the Tactical Squad. The Whirlwind scored a hit on Celestine, an Exorcist and a Rhino, and only managed to cause a glancing hit on the Rhino. I controlled 3 objectives including the one on my card, which gave me 4 VPs.

In his turn, he took off 1HP from the Dreadnought through a glancing hit and 1HP from the Whirlwind through a glancing hit as well. He manged to control 2 objectives he needed, scoring him 2VP.

Score : 4-2 for the Marines !

Second turn

Lots happened in Turn 2 ! Stormtalon arrived from reserves intending to kill the Rhinos. Outflanking Tactical squad came in as well, in the side closer to his objectives next to 2 Exorcists. In shooting, I destroyed an Exorcist with that Tactical squad, the Immolator with the Dreadnought. Stormtalon failed to do anything. Devastators + Scout + Tactical + Whirlwing squad killed off the 5 Sisters that disembarked with the Inquisitor and this netted me Warlord kill ! The Stormtalon was left to control the objective previously contested by that squad and their tank.

In assault, the Captain and his Assault squad destroyed a Rhino.

I scored 4 VP (1 for controlling objectives, 1 on a D3 for killing the Warlord, Slay the Warlord and First Blood).

In retaliation, his 3 Immolators all came in and all on the same side ! He disembarked his Dominions, who made short work of the Venerable Dreadnought (by rolling a 6, then a 6 after I forced him to reroll !), the Devastators (leaving only the Sergeant) and the Whirlwind, thanks to their Ignores Cover act of faith. In shooting, his 2 9-women squad of Sisters killed 4 members of the Assault Marines squad, leaving only the Veteran sergeant, a Flamer guy and 1 wound on the Captain. Celestine killed 2 Marines of the Outflanking Tactical squad with her Heavy Flamer and 3 more in the Assault with no wounds in return.

He scored 1 additional VP.

Score : 8-4 for the Marines

Third turn

Bloodshed in the backfield ! The Plasma Tactical squad, the Stormtalon and the Command Squad turned back. In Shooting, 2 Dominion Squads were obliterated as well as 2 members of the last one. The Captain detached from the Assault squad, who proceeded to flame a full squad of Sisters, killing none. In Assault, the Assault squad charged and lost the flamer on Overwatch, leaving the Sergeant and the Captain free to charge in. The two of them killed 5 Sisters on the charge who failed to inflict wounds back and got destroyed in Sweeping Advances. The lone Devastator Sergeant died in Assault against the 3 dominions (lame !). Celestine killed 3 more Tactical Marines, leaving only 1 remaining !

I scored 1 additional VP for holding an objective.

In his turn, the 3 multi meltas from the Immolators as well as 1 Exorcist forced the Stormtalon to jink and got a penetrating hit that Stunned him on Hover mode. The remaining squad of 9 Sisters killed the Captain while the remaining Exorcist hit the Command Squad, but the Stormshield took the hit bravely. His dominions embarked in an Immolator, never to be seen again.

Celestine failed to kill the last Marine !

He scored 3 additional VP with his Tactical objectives.

Score : 9-7 for the Marines.

Fourth turn

Pretty uneventful, I moved all of my force back to get the Objective that gave me 3 VPs for Holding the Line. Lost the Assault Sergeant to overwatch from the remaining Sisters squad. Holding one extra objective gave me 3 VPs as well !

He moved all his force forward, giving him 1 extra objective. In terms of casualties, he killed one Stormshield and one melta Veteran from the Command Squad. He destroyed my Rhino that I completely forgot about after Outflanking (shame on me !)

Score : 12-8 for the Marines.

Fifth turn

The Marines held the line and got another Immolator thanks to the Plasma from the Tactical Squad. I made the mistake of not discarding enough objectives that I couldn't take, giving me only 1 VP.

The Sisters rushed forward in Rhinos and Celestine killed the Scouts in melee. He scored an extra Victory point by holding an objective close at the edge of my deployment zone.

Score : 13-9 for the Marines.

At that point, I was winning the game and was very anxious for it to end. He had 2 Exorcists remaining, Celestine, 9 Sisters, 2 Dominions and 2 Immolators, while I only had 9 Tactical Marines from the plasma squad, the Librarian and 3 Veterans remaining.

We rolled for random game length and the game went on to turn 6 !

Sixth turn

The Marines tried to take Celestine down through firepower and Psychic powers but failed. I failed to activate both force and warp speed that would have given me a moral victory by killing Celestine if she charged. No victory points were scored on my side.

Celestine and the Rhino mounted Sisters squad rushed to the last objectives I was defending. He unloaded everything he had, leaving only the Librarian and 1 melta guy to take the charge from Celestine. She slew both him and the Librarian. He scored 6 Victory points in that turn (Linebreaker, 2 for holding 2 objectives and 3 on a D3 for holding 2 objectives and twice as much as I did).

Score : 15-13 for the Sisters of Battle.

Game ended on Turn 6.

Overall, a GREAT game for the both of us. He had an army which countered very well the Raven Guard Chapter Tactics and I managed to get the best out of it despite of that. He is easily the best guy in the club, and I've never seen him sweat so much to get the victory in a game !

Made of few mistakes of not discarding objectives that were hard to get, which could have cost me the game in the end. Not moving my Rhino was a bad idea as well !

In terms of list building, I'm quite happy with how it turned out to be honest. Sniper Scouts did not perform very well, but that was to be expected and I mainly included them because I had points to spare to get to 1500 points as well as because the models were ready !

The Venerable upgrade is not necessarily the smartest play for a lone Dreadnought. Had he survived, he would not have changed the face of the game too much, and I will probably drop it. I feel it's worth it though if you're playing multiple Dreadnoughts and want to have one with a tad more survivability.

Not giving a Rhino to the Command Squad was a bad idea. The Meltas and Psychic Powers were out of range for the whole game, and had I given them a Rhino, I would have been able to do much more and contribute more to the war effort. This unit scored me 3 VPs on its own, but with meltas they don't do much without a dedicated transport.

The Skyhammer missiles are really not that great. In terms of damage output, the Assault Cannon was the serious contender here, and 3 S7 shots isn't that great even against AV11. At most, I only ever had 2 that hit, and they did nothing except against Infantry. I will try to play them as Typhoon Missile Launchers and find 10 points elsewhere to get the most out of them. I think that this will work a lot better smile.png

Thanks for reading guys ! Hope you enjoyed !

What the treasonous sisters convent does not know is that this has all been a bluff to test their weaknesses and strengths. You have been feigning death, injury and retreat( known locally as tactical redeployment or charging in the other direction) and will soon bring down on them the full might of your chapter............ also the emperors justice.

Seriously though, didn't your libby also not do too well last time. With all the tanks he's got maybe you need another dev squad.

Your getting close brother, him including the inquisitor to counter your force tells me he knows it too.

We need pics or vassal to give complete tactical assessment devil.gif

Hehe, to be fair, the game was so tight it could have ended both ways ! biggrin.png It came down to lucky draws on Tactical Objectives in his last 2 turns, which is the name of the game and I'm fine with it msn-wink.gif

Well, the Libby and Command Squad didn't do much except to go back and forth between a few objectives and because they were on foot, they were out of range both of the meltas and the psychic powers (only had one turn where the phase impacted the game). Which is why I'll be dropping the Sniper Scouts to give them a Razorback with Lascannon and Twin Linked Plasma gun. At least, they'll get mobility and I'll have some longer range anti-tank smile.png

The melta power however prevented him from moving up too much with his mechanized force. Had they survived more, he might not have been that aggressive with his force in the end and go for linebreaker with his Rhino.

The Servo Skulls are not that bad of a counter to Raven Guard actually. They are only if you built your entire force to Scout up, then they pretty much negate Strike from the Shadows indeed. However, when only playing with one short ranged unit in a transport (the "Recon" squad), it isn't that bad... You can just Outflank them to open up a new front in his side, and that's something that's very good ! biggrin.png

He has the pics on his camera, I'll try to get him to send them to me so I can post them up ;)
