Space Wolves & Ork Starter Box

It's a "boxed set", not stated as a "starter box."

Two very different things.

The first could have anything from a couple of models that are designed for a campaign, a set of templates and a quick rule page, or simply a "how to play Sanctus Reach" booklet with your current models and a kit-bash instructions set. It could also be a full on battle force designed for the campaign.

But seeing as we already know that Sanctus Reach is a "campaign set" and what is coming next week is an extension of that campaign, it isn't necessarily a "starter", but may be more of an expansion (with very little info on the actual contents of the "boxed set").

So I definitely wouldn't go around saying you were right just yet, unless you had predicted the expansion. We don't know exactly what this is or if it will contain a mini-7th Edition rule book and all the other standards in the other starters.

my guess is that if it contains the model for the named warboss, which does seem very likely, it probably contains more models than that. I would guess two small forces like dark vengeance has. As to what other stuff is included, data slates, and... Not sure. I wouldn't be surprised by a mini rulebook, i wouldn't be surprised by scenarios etc for sanctua reach, but i also wouldn't be too surpised if either of those things were omitted.

One thing that I'm getting excited about is that IF space wolves are getting a treatment in the SR series then it seems likely that we'll get some juicy data slates. So far we've missed out on any formations so it'd be nice to get some love. And presumably whenever our codex shows up, we'll get more formations too.

If it's a starter set and includes Grukk, and if they do a limited edition, I wonder if it might contain a limited edition space wolf character? Could get lucky...

BOLS and Natfka just share what they've been told by others. Their sources vary in reliability. But it's hard to argue with photos - we can be quite confident there's a sanctus reach: storm claw, and that it contains a model and dataslate for Grukk.

I'm just not sure what kind of product storm claw would be other than a bundle of minis (including Grukk) along with data slates and maybe some other stuff.

Now, I guess it could be an ork formation/battleforce without opposing army models. But it seems odd to call it 'storm claw' if so. So I'm cautiously optimistic it will include space wolves and orks. But of course, I'm speculating.

If it's space wolves vs orks, what else could it contain (other than models/slates)?

1. Mini rulebook

2. Book for sanctus reach:

2a. Containing scenarios for the two armies (ie a smallish hard back or paperback)

2b. Containing additional campaign info, fluff, etc too (full size book, possibly in hard slipcase along mini rulebook)

3. Accessories - rulers, dice, templates

4. Optional collectors edition, possibly containing a limited edition plastic character

My wild, uninformed guess is for 1, 2a, 3 and 4. I'm guessing we'll see scenarios etc that focus purely on the models in the set and it'll be pretty light on other sanctus reach stuff because some people won't want the starter set but want to collect the campaign stuff. But yeah, again, I'm just making this all up msn-wink.gif

What space wolves models would make a good starter set?

Leaving aside new units/13th co etc, it'd be nice to see some stuff that is less well represented in the current range (or a bit of a pain to cobble together due to having to mix wolf pack sprues with vanilla kits), or something that could really benefit from alternative models. So although I'm sure we'd see grey hunters or blood claws, maybe some wolf scouts, fenrisian wolves, swift claws, lone wolves or even long fangs could be pretty cool to see in a starter set. Character-wise I would prefer to see a wolf priest or wolf lord/battle leader (or even iron priest..?), as I think we're pretty well served for rune priest models right now.

I also wonder. If we get space wolf data slates, will they use new units? If old units, will they have updated rules (to reflect any changes we might see in an upcoming codex) or will they use the rules in the current codex, risking the need for an update in a few short months? E.g. if the dataslate contains blood claws, and they drop to 13 points each in the new dex, what points cost will we see listed in the (hypothetical) dataslate?

Speculation speculation speculation...

Hmm that head needs replacing.. Kind of disappointed that there is no wolf priest model but MAYBE.. we'll be getting him in a plastic clamp pack.

That 40 mm base though, has me wondering what special rule he'll have.

I put all of my characters on 40mm bases, including Wolf Guard - looks nice and really helps them stand out.  I like the new model, and nice that they picked one of the less popular Wolf Lords to do.

It's also just a base, you can put him on a standard troop base I am sure.

But it looks like he has some really cool looking runes carved into his armor, so maybe we get actual kit with sculpted runic armor on it!!

...I wonder if he can use saga of the hunter while wearing it...

In current codex no, but who knows what they'll do in the next.

Kind of a vain hope, but although that Krom Dragongaze model looks like Power Armour, maybe it is in fact terminator armour hence the larger base. Unlikely I know, no matter how I look at it, still looks like power armour. A simpler reason might be it is put there purely for aesthethic reasons, that a 40mm base allows more elaborate basing as opposed to the smaller one.

Honestly, when I first looked at Captain Agemnan from Strike Force Ultra, I thought he looked like a power armoured marine. But only upon closer inspection, turned out to be termi armour.

We'll see as soon as we get some proper confirmed news from the evil overlords Geedubs.

It is quite clearly power/runic armor - the backpack/power-pack is right there in plain sight, as well as the placement of the head and neck relative to the armor.

That's what I'd expect, which is the same reason I base all of my characters on 40mm bases, but the fact remains that GW has never done this for other similar models, so we might actually get one of those special rules that makes a larger base relevant (e.g. one attack per model in base contact, etc.).

Wow, you mean GeeDubs might actually give him a special rule to not only justify his larger base but to actually make use of the larger base as an advantage as well? AWESOME!

Still, I wonder what kind of fighting style Krom's company will adopt. The 5th ed Codex just mentions he keeps a large number of wolf guard in his Great Company, and is fiercely competitive with not only his peers, the Wolf Lords, but his own Wolf Guard as well. I really hope they don't give him a rule like having to accept all challenges ala chaos champions, which will really be detrimental unless they give him eternal warrior or an additional toughness so he doesn't get easily splatted by a lascannon or powerfist.

seems fitting.

Awesome prayer indeed.
