Space Wolves & Ork Starter Box

While it is great to see such a detailed and dynamic new character model it doesn't really look promising for a "Starter Set." So far we've only seen a new Warboss and Wolf Lord models but all the other models surrounding them look like the standard plastic kits, not new snap-fit starter kit models. Perhaps a campaign boxed set but it's not looking good for a starter set.

Well Vash, his base kinda speaks for something to do with Orks and it does not seem a one-off, but more molded.  And even if the other two on the cover shown are just from our standard kits, it might just be about not giving up all the good on the cover at once.

I'll be honest with you lads, I'm just happy to see The Rout getting some attention, I have everything possible crossed this means we will see our updated codex soon and can get our hands on some new ways of living up to our calling as the Emperor's executioners msn-wink.gif

I never said it was a one off, it does look like a plastic clam-shell model. However we have never before seen models from a starter set leaked alongside other models, so again I very much doubt this is just a sneak peak. All I'm saying is I doubt this is a hint at a full blown starter set with wolves in it, it looks more like 2 new character models, maybe bundled into a larger box like the new Chaplain and Terminator Captain but not much more than that.

It's definitely bundled, if the photos are anything to go by. But yeah, the wolf pack (non snap fit) dudes next to him, as well as the fact that all the leaked images so far use the word 'box set' rather than starter set, suggest to me that it's likely something closer to SF ultra, but with two armies.

But who knows? Maybe 'campaign box set' is a new thing? Maybe it won't have a mini rulebook but instead a nice mini campaign book with plenty of scenarios, data slates, etc, such that if you bought the BRB and this alone, you could play without needing to immediately shell out for both codices as well. It would be nice if the box allowed at least a couple of different formations for the included models, though it's hard to imagine having THAT many options of it's just 3 or 4 units per side.

A campaign box with multiple dataslates would be kinda nice, because (if I'm not mistaken - the last starter set I owned was 2nd ed!) dark vengeance wasn't self contained - it lacked the data slates etc so a codex would have been necessary. Actually, I'm not sure of that. Did DV have unit profiles and points costs for the included models?

If it's like I describe, I'm hoping that whatever it is, it complements dark vengeance (or whatever DV is updated to) nicely. For this reason I am kinda hoping we'll see more starter set options - it would be cool to be able to choose your starter set - all come with the same up to date rulebook and accessories, but you can buy it with the AOBR models, DV models, perhaps the SR:SC models, and maybe additional options. It would make entry into the game much much easier - pick up a starter set that contains armies you're interested in, add to it a campaign box with complementary models, and start playing. Maybe you start with the AOBR and SC models - you paint up your space wolves and orks and play for a while, and after a few games decide you prefer orks (xenos scum!!) and only then do you need to actually shell out for the dex and a battleforce. By that point, you've built a pretty sizeable ork army built entirely from box sets (the discount kind). Yay.

Sounding to me like it's basically themed box sets in the same vein as the Strike Force Ultra or the Reclusiam Command; bunch of the older stuff packed in to a box with an exclusive character except this time they're doing them themed around the Sanctus Reach(?) campaign.

Still pretty exciting though.

New info on Faeit. http://natfka.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/leaked-images-space-wolves-vs-orks-box.html
"Images hold, but most likely contain more than these. 5 terminators, 1 special character-Krom Dragongaze, 5 Blood Claws, and 5 Grey Hunters.
10 gretchin, 1 special character-Grukk Face Rippa 3 Killa Kans,  Ork Boyz"

we'll know by the weekend sure enough.

don't ya just love reading other forums, and all those non space wolf players speculating about our codex. making claims like "they won't get flyers, they hate flying, its in their fluff" but without producing any fluff to back their statement. i just wanna HULK SLAP a B***H everytime.

Pretty sure we just hate teleporting unless it's necessary. :P

There's also some stigma towards jump packs and bikes, but that's about the extent of it. Flying a thunderhawk is an honor iirc, and landspeeders are very popular with the more raucous companies. If you ask me, the jump packs and bikes probably got their stigma due to being assigned to blood claws early on (Since they're our core assault force, and Assault marines are the ones riding bikes and wearing jump packs), who of course, being given new toys, did blood claw-y things, and made even bigger messes with their newfound mobility. Give it a few thousand years, and jump packs and bikes had become a symbol for troublemakers.

what might be weird is if krom has special rules but cannot do a 'krom-wing' with wolf guard as troops. After all, he's supposed to have lots of wolf guard..

While there's not a lot to go on yet, and I'd like to be wrong, the lack of any 'taking this character lets you take X as troops' in the Ork dex makes me think that unbound is the death knell for such rules. Krom won't get it, and I'm expecting Logan to lose it in the new dex.

I am pretty sure (and have had this discussion with my Wolfbrother) that the Space Wolf flyer is going to make the Storm Chicken look undergunned...

I mean after all, the designers like wolves so much they made wolves riding wolves...  If they do that how much more OP is a wolf flyer going to be?

Aye the pic seems to show this:

Orks:
Grukk Face-Rippa
5 Nobz
10 Grots
1 Runtherd
3 Killa Kanz

Space Wolves:
Krom Dragongaze
5 Wolf Guards
5 Grey Hunters
5 Blood Claws

However whether that is an actual starter set as opposed to just some GW 'setup' to show how you may set up an army for their campaign rules, i dunno. Also, the 5 grey hunters/bloodclaws thing is a bit odd, as you can make either with that sprue set (so if it is a starter, would be interesting to see if they jsut give you the whole of the GH/BC box, or 5 of each with tailored wargear etc (would be annoying).

see for me i see no need in them changing the TDA or GH/BC box sets, apart from giving us a combi weapon sprue!

The CML is easy enough to just magnetize to a suit of terminator armour, whereas having to craft 5 combi weapons every time (and its not like that CW loadout isnt a very popular choice) is more of a pain (although FW sprue has helped this a bit).

I hope the new codex reverts back to the old ways where we can put CML/AC on every wolf guard :D (wont count on it though hahaha)
