Space Wolves & Ork Starter Box

I want this and yet I don't want it. Honestly, I have zero use for any of it aside from the new WL model and the rulebook. This set will probably start a fair number of new armies out there in the wild, but its :cuss all use for SW players IMO. Still, its a step in a good direction I suppose.

I lose power for 3 days & look what happens. THanks everyone for the posts. Least now I'n up to speed. Really liking the Krom Dragongaze model. And I wouldn't turn down a few more Termies. Don't really need the troops but then again can you really ever have to many troops? LOL!!! THe orks will give me some trade bait to. All in all a win win.

Loose power for 3 days?

Do you live in a lesser developed country like the US of A?

Jokes aside. I agree on both the Krom model and the lovely terminators.

What the duece, newest rumor is we have a full release coming this month!?

where has this rumour surfaced? Or is it basic arrhythmic.

http://www.belloflostsouls.net/2014/07/gw-rumors-summer-schedule-fasten-your.html  I mean it's Bols, but the way things are ramping up rapid, with no mention of Britts anywhere, it looks like it's gonna be another 40k dex next, which would actually be smart with them to sandwcich the box set with the two relevant codex's

Indeed, it has snowballed in the last few days. You're right it does make sense to sandwich the set with both armies especially while everyone is quite hyped up about them.

Let us hope that the speed of the releases doesn't impact on the quality of the publications, if the codex does in fact come out this month. I guess it would be good proof of the wolves ability to stand the test of time if we see minor changes to the codex, bar the usual updates in format, fluff and newer models.

by the way

krom's pose is the same with the illustration on page 95'th of our codex smile.png

Yup. The WD article that we've got the leaked photos of mentions that the sculpt was "inspired by a classic Dave Gallagher illustration...". I think they captured the feeling pretty well as it's a rather nice looking model. Perhaps nice enough to sell me a box (that I don't need :( )

The codex's are written long before release, they get play tested for a long long time, which has it's plus/minus.  The good, it's tested, the bad, sometimes it's tested too long and the "new" rules are somewhat outdated.

so I just did the math , and the $$ value of the kits is almost exactly balanced , the SW kits individualy add up to $130 cdn ( that is allowing $25 for the HQ model ) and the ork kits add up to $130 cdn for the orks allowing for $25 for the HQ model . it seems GW can achieve ballance when it wants to but with $$ not points .

I have not done the points balance yet .

either way the package is a good value $260in models , + the core rule book + a campaign setting to frig with for $150 cdn . if you say the core rule book is worth $40 that kit is a very good deal , basically half off .

for me it is great as I play both SW and orks but either way it is a good deal .

Well, I'm all for me wolves getting some attention as they are my army of choice since many years. Yet I feel like GW can't decide which buisnessmodel to follow.. The Orks' release saw them getting their models and codex over a period of, what - 5 - 6 weeks? And now they are releasing the wolves all in july which only really leaves us getting our due the very last weekend in july with the 19th dedicated to the new limited space wolves/orks kit. Although our models are pretty much up-to-date if you don't consider our characters. Must leave us getting in all in one go or releasing them admist the rumored chaos releases in august.

Well, better stay tuned then!

Wasn't  the picture on page 95 of the SW codex was used by GW before for a collectors edition Ragnar Blackmane diaorama?

Looks like GW have made another sale, like the Space Marine Strike Force set just too much of a saving to ignore even without the campaign gubbins.  I'm just hoping this won't be a limited time deal.

It's a cool model but I really have no use for it. I mean the infantry and orks I could use but I already have enough of all those models, more would be nice I guess but all I really want is the mini-rulebook and maybe the campaign material...

Yea, as much as it's not a starter pack, when it comes down to it, it's a starter pack. The models included are definitely not that enticing to longtime players (considering it really only includes the same amount of models, marine-wise, that assault on black reach did). They're definitely not terrible things to get, but we've already got a bunch of these models and don't need the extra hassle of trying to find something to do with the Ork stuff. So any longtime Wolves player is only get this on some extreme circumstances. They want to start an Ork army, and wouldn't mind more Space Wolves. They really, really, really want the mini-dex and don't want to wait for either it or Krom to hit Ebay as a single kit, or .... actually that's pretty much all I can think of. Maybe you're just the crazy, gotta have em' all, collector type?

It'll be interesting to see how this does, but as a limited release not meant to be a starter kit, I don't see it doing well.

The other thing I see to support it as the new starter kit, is that while Dark Vengeance wasn't labeled as a Campaign Kit, the lore around the models included was of the Crimson Slaughter vs the Dark Angels during a particular battle. So you really could say it was a campaign kit, just without the planetstrike book. Given their rush to try and bring out the narrative in everything they do, I really just see "Campaign Kit" as their type of rebranding of the start ones, but that's just my two cents.

@ XWINGT65-Nope. Not the US of A. I kinda look down on them. I'm in Canada. And the reason for a 3 day power outage was a storm called Aurthor. We don't normally get near hurricane like weather here. It kinda of knocked every one's socks off here. I'm lucky. There will people here without power for atleast another week.

As for the starter set, to me, for the rule book, Krom & some extra Termies, the price is worth it. If I don't get it, GW will never release Krom on his own & I'll have to wait months for them to put out a mini rule book & end up buying the original 'cause I'll just get fed up waiting in the end. By buying it, I get what I want, Have some extra stuff(can always trade it)& have some trade bait/bitz in all the ork stuff & probably be able to get Krom on his own(toying with a conversion idea already--sometimes I can't leave something alone--the woman hates it--LOL!!!). It's kinda of Murphy's Law so screw it. I may as well bite the bullet.

Ohhh. Hope the blown power was all the trouble you had, and that all are un hurt.

I managed to arrange to split the box with a co-worker. Nets me all the wolves for 30£. A fair deal.

Seems like this is a more advanced "starter": doesn't seem to have any of the miscellaneous small stuff (dice, measuring sticks, templates) - at least none of that has been described in anything yet, but has more advanced to put together for minis, includes the rule book and rules for using the models in the box, plus campaign material. You'd need some additional time and materials outside the box itself to get playing.

DV is more a "junior starter" - push-fit models, has all the miscellaneous small stuff, has scenarios to play only, no real "army list" type material, very little association to other GW material, other than the DA Codex and CSM Codex + Crimson Slaughter supplements. More of a clip, clean and play basic stuff type box, needs absolutely nothing else to go (clippers and/or knife and you're pretty much done).

Ordered it from DGS.. sooooo much cheaper than the nzd230 price tag!

Now... how will I field a detachment from a second great company alongside my Redmaw's?

I like wolf guard so I think it'll give me an excuse for having lots - paint 2/3 of them in Dragongaze's livery.

Also... there are some other options I like in principle that are harder to square with Redmaw's modus operandi. Having some of Krom's will make it easier to justify picking up a Sicaran and/or some RLD weapons batteries.

Loosely, Krom can be used for the guys that are deployed turn 1, freeing Redmaw's company to all go BEL msn-wink.gif
