Battle Brief: Chaos Demons (1500pts)

Hello Brothers

I recently had a fun battle with some Chaos Demons, mostly Khorne and Tzeentch in my campaign league at the local GS. It was 1500 pts and we played a Malestrom game with a diagonal deployment and objective cards, starting with six, and losing one each turn.

I planned for a swarm because she plays a lot of demonettes, so I brough the LR redeemer and mostly loaded out with flamers. I ran some ML long fangs with my new TDA/CML pack leader. I played a WGBL on mount with thunderwolves, vindicator, razorback, and DP with combi plas WG

She had (forgive my ignorance) Khorne guys on mounts, tzeentch ladies on lizards, two huge groups of ladies, some manta ray looking skimmers, Big Purple crab leg guy and a chariot with a brutal flamer.

I won the first turn and set the line with my armour. I left the cavalry behind cover because I wanted to pick which unit they would fight and force her to work through my armour. My vindicator did so much work because she didn't have much shooting, and i just kept it out of range. I dropped a pod of combi plas and shot her Khorne Cav. They did a great job but i got a lot of "gets hot" which I didn't think about. They did the job though and my opponent took the bait.

She turned two units around and charged the Guard which broke her own line of advance. They did a serviceable job in overwatch, but only a few survived the hammer of wrath from the demon beasts. She won first Blood and took an objective.

I stayed behind my armour chipping away at her numbers with my LF, Razorback, Vindi and LR. On her second turn her reserves arrived and in came the crab vehicle, Flamer chariot, and 20 demonettes. My TDA tanked the wounds from the chariot flamer like a champ, and my Thunderwolves took the brunt of the crab vehicle.

My text turn I focused on her units among my lines, shooting down the vehicle with the LF, and LR melta. My vindicator smashed the demonettes who forgot to run after deepstriking and were a prime target, She lost only 3 because of some sweet save rolls. My own cavalry was overwhelmed with the kill-urge and charged the ranks of the demonettes. Spreading wounds around and making SS saves helped the wolves stay alive. After I won the combat, she failed some sort of test and 11 models were taken off the table. This was a turning point in the game.

Next turn and her cav were bogged down with the troops in the LR. Her conjured units were close to my thunderwolves and were chiseled down by my Razorback and some LF fire. The remaining shooting destroyed the chariot that had burned a squad of GH

The game was really close, but in the opening of the 5th turn I killed her Warlord, and had a bonus D3 points, which i could re-roll due to my Warlord trait. I pulled ahead 13-11 and she had no way back. The wolves had won the day.

Thanks for listening.

Excellent job. Wouldn't mind a more details though, like your own list even if you can't remember your friend's list.

Also the units you described like daemonettes and the chariot sounds and looks more like Slaanesh than Tzeetch. Remember, Slaneesh is the one that increases initiative and speed, whereas Tzeetch normally improves invuln save by one. Tzeetch ain't got no ladies, just some crazy big bird sorcerors and a bunch of mutated horrors whose gender and type is indescribable, normally riding on floating discs.

If I were to guess, he had Slaanesh daemonettes, mounted daemonettes as cavalry, manta rays would be Screamers of Tzeetch, crab guy is a Soul Grinder with Plehgm cannon (essentially a walking Leman Russ tank with big scary CC abilities), and a burning chariot of Tzeetch, which would definitely have a powerful flamer which I'm not sure is AP3 or not.

Still you fared well, considering daemonettes are feared due to their rending attacks and large number of attacks, 2 base if I'm not mistaken. Your tactical decisions seem sound as well. Congrats.

Strategy

This list was designed to take on a numerous army that I knew would dominate me with psychic dice. I decided to play some CC HQ units to enhance my chances if the demons broke my line. I wanted to set the edge with my armour, with my vindicator and LR taking center stage and hopefully target priority.

My plasma team was to drop behind the enemy deployment and hit any HVT's that were hiding in the backfield.

I spread the Cav, LF and Lone wolf across my backfield, plugging up my deployment zone to constrict space for deepstriking reserves. I tried to choke off access with terrain and vehicles to keep the odds in my favour. The bottle necks it created were perfect for my templates.

Somethings I would fix:

Perhaps drop the lone wolf and give my LR squad a banner, or mark of the wolfen. I would also have like to brought some las cannons because the Krak Missles are less effective at vehicle destruction. I should have also considered a Wolf Priest with my plas sq. They could re-roll the "gets hot" and perhaps fair better in combat.

Thanks for listening.

You are correct about the units, and please forgive my ignorance. The loss of 11 daemonettes after the first combat really changed the tide. I saved well against the Soulgrinder and my opponent made a few tactical decisions that I may not have made. Her list had little to hurt my LR and even my vindicator, on top of that she sent the screamer sq after the Razorback, which was good for me.

lol, really bad idea to send the screamers after razorback. As I understand, Screamers have a special attack with armourbane and should have used that against the LR or vindicator, both are clearly more high damaging with nasty guns and templates. Oh well, could have been worse for you.
