Jostal
So I'm thinking of starting an Astra Militarum Army. So far I've mainly played Space Marines and Blood Angels. Where should I start? CoffeeGrunt
That all depends on the style you want to roll with, really. What is it about Guard that made you want to play it? Hordes of Infantry? Walls of Tanks? Zooming Fliers with Grav Chuting Veterans leaping out? Fast Hellhounds sweeping across the field and unleashing walls of flame? Jostal
Mainly the tanks and the shooty capability of Veteran Squads. Im looking for something to support my imperial knight and I am considering guard for their lower cost to increase my overall number of units on the field. CoffeeGrunt
Vendettas are handy for picking up the slack as far as Anti-Air with your Knight. Alongside suitably-equipped Veterans in Chimeras with say, Pask in a squadron, it could give you some oomph against hard targets. Giving the Chimera Veterans Meltas will make them a threat that'll draw fire from your Knights. Frater Cornelius
Careful wit advancing units along with the Knight. If it blows up, it might take your Chimeras with it. Consider long ranged support like Basilisks or Wyvern. For AA, Vendetta is decent but by war not as glorious as before. The Hydra is another option. If you are looking for numbers, try a Platoon (with heavy weapons in the Infantry Squads) + 1-2 Veteran Squad(s) supported by Heavy Support tanks, possibly a LR HQ squad if you have the points. As for the Knight, go with the melta version. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293449-starting-an-am-army/#findComment-3739313 Share on other sites
Idlem
Chimeras will help your troops keep up with the Knight, and if you run them right they can protect each others sides. If you give a Chimera to a PCS or CCS, you can ride along and give orders to an insanely mobile force. If you're planning to fill up your troop choice with vets, Chimera's are a way to go. CoffeeGrunt
Chimeras are unlikely to be anything more than Glanced by the Knight's explosion, and it can only hit each once. Give it a berth of about 6" for the central Strength D large blast, and you should be fine. march10k
Mainly the tanks and the shooty capability of Veteran Squads. Im looking for something to support my imperial knight and I am considering guard for their lower cost to increase my overall number of units on the field. Veteran squads...shooty capability. Hmmm. I guess if you're giving them, for example, 3 plasma guns, then yeah. But if it's just lasguns or a heavy weapon, then 10 points for BS4 is kind of a bad deal. Tanks are pretty straightforward, but if you're looking for "low cost" infantry to support the knight, then you're probably not spending a lot on kit for the infantry, which in turn means you should not be too keen on making them veterans. If they're there for raw numbers, infantry platoons are the way to go. If you expect them to kill stuff, they're not really going to end up being as cheap as you thought (10 veterans with three plasma guns and carapace armor costs you 120 points...still a fantastic deal, but it's not the 5ppm people think of when they think IG. In any case, you really should spam dedicated transports for every troops unit that you can. Even if you run them empty and park the infantry in cover. Idlem
What people tend to underestimate is the Chimera's ability to spew out pure hatred on the enemy. Sure, Terminators might not have much to worry about, but when you've got a unit embarked on the Chimera, you can get up to 18 shots out of one. (Based on what you take with hull weapons and what the squad inside has for weapons) If you're going this route, don't worry about Carapace armor. The tank is their armor and if it gets blown up, it's their cover. Sides, the Knight's probably gonna soak up most incoming fire. Any reason not to consider the cheaper platoon squads and bury them in Chimera. Their lower BS means less if you load up on template weapons.
