Perrin
Honestly, I really like the fact that even though the Ultramarines bombed themselves, it is the Word Bearers that will be blamed. It keeps very much in-line with "Everything you know is a lie". That and also it means that the XII and XVII Legion are ultimately responsible for the destruction of 492 worlds, directly and indirectly. How's that for anniliating the enemy? Are that many worlds actually destroyed or is it just cause 40k Ultramar has 8? Kol Saresk
Are that many worlds actually destroyed or is it just cause 40k Ultramar has 8?Well, let's put it this way. We know from Betrayer that Lorgar was witnessing every world the XVII and XII were attacking and winning also being bombarded into dust to help fulill the Ruinstorm. May not have necessarily been the full 492 worlds. Then again, Calth was destroyed but survived thanks to the arcologies. But we also know that as Legatus is fond of pointing out, that while it is not explicitly said those 8 worlds are only Ultramar and have only been Ultramar, the IA: UM is certainly written as if that was the author's(in-universe; which is an Imperial historian) believes that is the case. We also know that Calth is one of the farthest out lying planets in what is "Ultramar". We also know that according to Betrayer, the Five Hundred Worlds are made up of worlds conquered by Guilliman and that in 40K, these worlds(and others) are patrolled by the Eagle Warriors. So ultimately, we could argue that no, not 492 worlds were destroyed, but we do know at least 3+however many Lorgar listened to burn in Betrayer were destroyed. We also know that 40K's viewpoint of history is about as unbiased as the US media. For example, the Ultramarines remember Calth a the sight of a great betrayal but an ultimate success where Guilliman outmaneuvers what was surely a massive Word Bearer fleet that then poisons Calth's sun just to spite the XIII while Know No Fear "shows"(retcons if your a die-hard) that the destruction of the Veridian Star was the actual goal as it would birth the Ruinstorm and that Calth itself was simply a sacrifice wrought through betrayal and carnage, with ironically both sides being betrayed(the XIII by the XVII; the XVII by Lorgar). So, because it makes me feel pretty and it casts a shadow on the Ultramarines that they distorted Imperial history to cover up just how big a blow they took during the Heresy, 492(493 if you count Calth) worlds were put to the torch. Chaeron
Looks like I might need to get my hands on this book after all. It seems like it was a resounding success. Haha, it's inevitably when you don't order one of these Limited Editions that it will be. I'm stoked to read it now. There's always ebay and amazon, if you're patient and check often. Somebody inevitably sells their copy, usually with a higher price tag but not always. I got Ravenlord for 30 USD, though it was thoroughly, horrifically overpriced as far as quality goes. That said, I think this one is still available. BL isn't saying out of print or unavailable or anything. If it's still available by my next check, I'll get it. Oh yeah, I managed to get the back copies for either the same price or less than what it would've cost me new - inevitably, if you keep looking, you'll get lucky. It's definitely still available (like Ravenlord, haha). Sviox
I have to say, this was one of the best limited edition novellas. Perhaps second best, right after Aurelian. Very good for a practically unknown author. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293546-coming-soonthe-purge/page/6/#findComment-3778824 Share on other sites
Chaeron
Absolutely superb. Have just finished it and complete agree, easily one of the best I've read. Loved it all. Chaeron
I am hoping that it may be expounded elsewhere... I would happily take another Reynolds novel or novella to explore that and more besides. Hugely impressed by it, loved the cyclical nature and the entire premise. Marshal Rohr
I just wish we saw a bit more of what the Warmonger saw to change his mind. "Coming soon, exclusively to audio drama..." The End of Advancing the Plot. Listen as the author tells you the story of another small band of shattered legion warriors in search of another dark weapon that may stop the Warmaster. Coming soon, from an author with more free time than Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill, or Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Or Another Audio Compilation. We don't really know exactly where we are supposed to be in the plot, so we have compiled some of the best stories of your favorite characters who appear in each and every release. Listen as Lucius witnesses something gratuitously creepy happen in the Emperor's Children. Be shocked as Corax meanders through the Imperium killing what few remaining loyalists from the Traitor Legions exist. Be sad as Dan Abnett phones it in with his next bit about Ollanius Pious and John Grammaticus that he wrote on his tablet whilst using the privy. In the Age of Darkness, the authors have become bored writing the same story for eight years. Order now and listen to their final works before they move on to unlicensed fiction projects! TrafficCustodes
Yeah, Reynolds' 'Eightfold Path' story was a great audio drama - I've no doubt he could make a great extension of this novella. But with Graham saying he's hoping to write a story about Horus' mysterious experiences in the Warp/communing with the Gods during Vengeful Spirit, I'd be shocked if they let Reynolds do something going over similar ground for a less significant character. A shame, because I think the Reynolds version might be better than the McNeill version... but also, the way it stands, I like the mystery around what Talgron actually 'saw'. It makes it feel a bit more scary/Lovecraftian. Kol Saresk
Well considering any story of "just what happened while you were in the warp?" would basically a repeat of the premise behind Aurelian, I want to see what Sor Talgron saw. Chaeron
To make him change from a warrior to an apostle, absolutely. I have faith that all these writers could easily convey a different set of things each character sees, equally cool and disturbing: if given the chance. Hyaenidae
Well considering any story of "just what happened while you were in the warp?" would basically a repeat of the premise behind Aurelian, I want to see what Sor Talgron saw. An atheist saw his father as a golden God, and was resurrected by that being at deaths' door. That would be enough, I'd say. If you've read 'The First Heretic' and 'Betrayer', you should be fine ('Flight Of The Eisenstein' as well, maybe). Sor Talgron appeared before in 'Scions Of The Storm' from the 'Tales Of Heresy' collection. I don't think you need to read that one before 'The Purge', but it's up to you. Kol Saresk
Yeah, but very little of that is what I'd call "required reading". For the most part, The First Heretic, Know No Fear and Betrayer all show it relates to certain overarching plotlines and the Word Bearers series shows us certain little plot nuggets, but by itself it is a rather standalone novel and could easily be read by itself. Conn Eremon
Just finished it. I liked it, quite a bit. It actually had something that I very rarely see in a Traitor-focused book, and that is sympathetic Loyalists. Many of them like to really push the inadequacy or hypocrisy of the Loyalists. The best representation I can think of is AD-B's Night Lords trilogy, which showed the Loyalists during the Scouring as terrifyingly effective. So I was pleasantly surprised at the Ultramarines in this book. It helps I guess that the main character was resistant to the ideals of the Traitor cause. I am curious, who is this Warmonger character? Is it Sor Talgron's future? On a side note, I'm kind of irritated that the top three super special novellas are all Traitor-centric. I liked Aurelian and Tallarn better, but this was leagues better than the likes of the Ravenlord.
