Brother Mayhem
Hey all, I am preparing to kit up my Space Wolves with fancy stuff when I finish painting them all. So, what style should I go? I want to drop pod, but I don't want to buy loads just to find they're crap. Or I could go Rhinos but my Space Marines and CSM are Mech. I have 3x 10 Grey Hunters, 10 Blood Claws, 2x 6 Long Fangs, 2 Drop Pod Dreads and 5 TDA Wolf Guard. Mech or Pods? Leif Bearclaw
If you want to go pod, go pod. But there' pros and cons to both really. The mobility of mech could be advantageous in Maelstrom missions, with the random objective BS, plus tanks are cool. However, the changes to the vehicle damage table don't really help Rhinos/Razorbacks, as they can still be hull point stripped with contemptuous ease. Plus you'll need some heavier armour to back up your transports, Long Fangs can struggle in mech lists, being the only infantry on the board and lacking ablative wounds. While with pods, you can gear a nasty alpha strike, which can hopefully keep the enemy on the back foot for the entire game. Plus super scoring pods, forget about them at your peril. Baulder
I'm a big fan of objective secured pods, that said I've also found recently that in maelstrom missions msu with razorbacks have been great. It all comes down to how you want to play. Pods are in your face and get the unit where it needs to be fast. Rhinos/razors allow you the mid-game manoeuvrability that can sometimes be detrimental to completing the mission. I prefer pods, but have more success with tanks. That said I play eldar/dark eldar a lot so it isn't a surprise. see if you can borrow some of each from mates and try them out, see which you prefer then spend the cash imo. Teetengee
I would suggest pods, particularly if you even plan on some IG allies, as they synergize very well with a lot of guard tactics. wulfgar hammerfist
I love drop pods! The ability to put troops right where they need to be is ace and not deploying anything on the table is a nice bonus as well. I prefer DP lists but I have played mech heavy as well with LRs and Vindicators supporting my rhino borne grey hunters. Nrthstar
I usually use two of each and I haven't lost a game in 7th yet, maelstrom or eternal war. I did recently swap out one of my drop pods for a legion of the damned squad, just to change things up and watch the fear on the face of jinkers. Valerian
You might want to read the Guide in my signature block; I discuss in some detail the issue of Mobility (Operational and Tactical), which might help you decide. legalsars
Pod armies can be a LOT of fun, but be prepared to have units on their own as to heavy support unless you are dropping dreadnaughts in with them. I periodically run a list of 3 units of grey hunters, 9 deep, 1 rune priest a piece, 1 melta, in un-upgraded pods, 3 pods of wolf guard in TDA with combimelta, chainfist, and a heavy flamer/asscan, 3 landspeeders w 2x multi meltas x2, drop them as close to the enemy as possible and smash everything armored possible. In Apoc games, a friend and I will do 5K points and I will forgo lord of war/superheavies to take 12 drop pods full of a space wolf company, mostly infantry with dred support. The first few turns are VICIOUS, but if taken out piecemeal, the army peters out.
