ChaosKen60
Starting again – And I got some questions??? Well I have not posted in a long, long time – so please forgive the long opening. I had quit 40K a while back during the 4th Edition and was a huge CSM nut sold all my stuff with the exception of my copy of Rogue Trader (signed by Andy C.) and one old RT Space marine (my 1st fig), a few months back I was thought of getting back into it; but I did not want CSM, so I thought about playing bugs and even bought a few. But they are bugs – I even bought a few, I just could not get into them, their fluff is good. But it just does not get a hold of me – I am not knocking them BTW. So I thought about Dark Eldar – well for me too much like playing CSM without the power armor. So I thought instead of CSM why not a Space Marine – it was what I started with back in RT days. So I started reading the various chapters, reading fluff – Dark Angels: all doom and gloom, Blood Angels: Great read but, vampires in space – Nah!, Imperial Fist: Well they are yellow, who sticks their hands in what??, Ultramarines (or one of their many copies) – well this is what I started with so long ago, and now they have a lot of cool figs. But they just did not feel right, so that left Space Wolves; I found a very, very beat up copy of the current codex, great fluff, great feel, and one of the few armies that gave my old CSM army a run for it’s money. Still reading okay – great!! NOW my questions; with the Great Companies – the Wolf Lords; since they are all listed. For most of you how do you decide which company to play? Or do you screw the fluff and make up your own Great Company and it’s Lord? Thanks and again sorry for the long read J ChaosKen Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293633-starting-again-%E2%80%93-and-i-got-some-questions/ Share on other sites
Jarl of Wulfen
I run a 13th company style foot spotter army. 3 packs of grey hunters, 2 packs of CC wolf guard, I've taken to adding in some thunderwolves purely for rule of cool, and a large pack of wolves Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293633-starting-again-%E2%80%93-and-i-got-some-questions/#findComment-3742562 Share on other sites
Dantay VI
Hey ChaosKen, welcome back. Wolves are cool, and yes thew Lords have all got name, but as part of the older fluff not in the codex. The Wolf Lords swear Fealty to Russ and the Allfather. Not the great wolf, he is just the pack Alpha. If a Lord wishes to leave the Fang and strike out on his own, provided he has the great wolfs blessing he can do so, if not he will be hunted down like the cur he is. Other parts of the older fluff show great companies who are too far away or are engaged on missions which keep them from the Fang and just do not come back, so while there are 12 named Lords the fluff allows you to make up your own Lord and configure him how you wish. And as most of the named wolf Lords do not have models or character profiles you can make them how you wish too. And just choose the iconography you like and run with it. Many of the wolf totems have been used time and again as wolf lords come and go lie on the red snow. For my part, I am slowly making models for all the Wolf Lords, and my army has elements from each of the 12 known great companies. Swift Claws are Engirs, Wolf Gurd are a mix, GH's mainly belong to Bran, Blood Claws mainly belong to Ragnar etc.. Thanks dantay_XV I am leaning towards Gunnar Red Moon, I like his discription "a roaring, laughing, bear of a man of a man" sounds a little like me - LoL. And I like Long Fangs, in my CSM day I had a "pack" converted into CSM - to heckle the SW player I knew LoL Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293633-starting-again-%E2%80%93-and-i-got-some-questions/#findComment-3742588 Share on other sites
ChaosKen60
Almost forgot overall any advice against Orks ---- not so much tatics but army make up. And the player I face is heavy into Troops and large units --- swamp'um!! Valerian
Ken, Welcome back to the hobby. Basically, there are three solutions to your DIY Wolf Lord issue: 1. Play as a Lost Company (Your Wolf Lord and his forces are unable to return to the Fang for whatever reason (Warp Storm, extended campaign, ruined Warp Drives, lost in time, whatever). 2. Play as one of the named, but undefined current Wolf Lords (i.e. anybody other than Logan, Ragnar, Krom, Bran) that'll give you the freedom to select weapons, wargear, and saga as you see fit. 3. Play as a historic Wolf Lord (named and equipped however you see fit, as you're playing someone from the past, at any point along a 10,000 year timeline that is available to you. Now for advice: don't do anything, except for perhaps buying the new Stormclaw boxed set, or other cheap models you can find, until the new codex comes out. It won't be long now, so just be patient before you go driving forward with something that might not be optimal in a couple of weeks. But I never been one to buy the "hot new" unit, I have found in my years playing this game that alot of times the "hot new' unit disappears in the next codex or new edition of the game. I normally stick with Troops, and Foot Heavy Support, and bikes for fast attack. I have found alot of times it is your troops that win you games. Leif Bearclaw
Well I play Bjorn Stormwolf's company. There is a simple reason for this. Marines don't look right with empty shoulder pads imo, and when I was starting my Wolves (under the third ed dex, where the Lords were just names, not even the paragraphs they have now) I didn't have the confidence/skill to muck about with anything other than the waterslides you get in the kits. There are 5 possible Great Company badges, but 2 are for Logans's company and one is for Ragnar's. Being special characters I wanted to avoid them (especially as this was before the current special character glut), which left me witrh the choice of Stromwolf or Morkai, and I liked the thunderwolf symbol better. One thing you could do against Orks which could be fun, is match his green swarm with a grey one. While not an overall competitive build, it's pretty easy to fit 50-60 Grey Hunters into a 1500 point list. On a more serious note, tanks are your friends. Orks have always struggled somewhat with anti-tank, but the new dex has removed one of their best pieces of AT gear, and their poor shooting reliability compounds the 7th ed issue of only AP2 weaponry can explode vehicles. Vindicators and Whirlwinds are especially scary, but most armour can give Orks a bad time. ChaosKen60
Yup I know tanks drive orks nutters; but my main foe - a long time ork player just seems to have the best luck at killing tanks (but that a few editions ago), if you ever see how this guy rolls you would freak ----- major luck from Mork and Gork. I had him on game shoot a unit of my CSM with a squad of 30 boyz, hit with 25 of them, and wound with 20. LoL is the type of player if he can only hurt your tank with a 6 he will get it LoL But I will get my Land Raiders, I just love those monsters. And maybe Rback for my Long Fangs. CatSmasher
I made up my own company. The Wolf Lord Magnus Wolfborne was chosen from the retinue of Ragnar Blackmane after the venerable Wolf Lord had not returned from a long hunt. I use the Ragnar markings but I have my 'own' characters. Dantay VI
Crusaders and redeemers are great for hordy armies, I always wondered how a helios would fare from the back of the board dropping blasts and sniping vehicles. S10 large blast vindicators would be good too, and flamer units if he runs lots of light troops. Thanks for the advice dantay Since I am a old CSM player I never thought about those two, I have fought against Crusaders running Black Templars during my CSM days, they are a pain. CatSmasher
I like the Redeemer a lot because it matches well with the 10xGH with WGBL in TDA. For my game this week against demons I am running this with 2x Flamers, and One heavy flamer on the WG. Move, disembark, shoot with one squad with LR, then 16 bolter shots, three flamer templates for another. Then I will wait for the hordes to charge, and overwatch. The AP 3 Flamers are also awesome against marines, but especially usefull against Eldar Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293633-starting-again-%E2%80%93-and-i-got-some-questions/#findComment-3745038 Share on other sites

I normally stick with Troops, and Foot Heavy Support, and bikes for fast attack. I have found alot of times it is your troops that win you games. It's not so much about the "new shiny" as it is about other things. The last codex change altered the Grey Hunter packs to allow for 2 special weapons if the squad had 10 models, it moved the Wolf Standard from Wolf Guard to Grey Hunters, made Long Fangs able to take a 5th heavy weapon trooper and changed it so they only get split fire if the pack leader doesn't fire. So if I had, say, built the Pack Leader with a plasma pistol under the old rules that wouldn't do me much good under the new rules would it have? It's that kind of shifty alteration to equipment, unit sizes and specific rules that can make it annoying to update an army after each new codex so it can be advantageous to wait to build even basic units until the new rules come out. skeletoro
yep, I'm planning on building a ~1k detachment of krom's great company in 2 months for a tourney and I'm just gonna dry fit everything until we get our new dex! Yes Vash, I know what you mean, when I changed from 2nd Ed CSM to 3rd Ed it was very much a shock. The game changes alot and sometimes these change are real pain. And I am sure there will be stuff that will make players say "WHAT IS GW THINKING". :) yep, I'm planning on building a ~1k detachment of krom's great company in 2 months for a tourney and I'm just gonna dry fit everything until we get our new dex!
