Salamanders Paint Scheme

Recommended Posts

About 2/3 of the way through my Sergeants so far. One for each of the 2 10-man Tactical squads in rhinos, and the sergeant for my Volkite Culiverns squad.

I've made use of the lovely, lovely FW upgrade kits as well.

I'm gonna finish these 3 off, and am currently painting the Volkite Culiverns squad, which is somewhat daunting and terrifying.

Liking the green Kor'Vesh! I think a wee bit of weathering on the armour and your fine :) I've not bothered on the Pyros as they have enough detail but my tacticals are gonna have a bit of dust around boots, some chips on the armour etc

Yeah that's one thing I never get with FW; it seems as though they rush things out or don't think about their schemes properly. For example, the Word Bearers showcasing Volkite Calivers look awesome. The ones showing the Upgrade kits though look dreadful. If they just put a single example of a marine on the site, painted and with the upgrades, they'd probably sell a lot more!

Also, I don't get why they show off the Chest upgrades by covering them with bolters (looking at you, Emperor's Children chest upgrade kit)

Thanks for sharing those pics. The upgrades look good, and I'll definitely add them for my next order. I'm particularly impressed with the mk II or III helm. Looks nice painted up, much better than I expected. The mkIV is great too, but I expected that!

Thanks for the comments on my guys. I've never really bothered with weathering before, but could certainly go for some dusty legs, and some limited superficial battle damage. I like to think of sallies tending and repairing their armour and weapons after every engagement. I imaging their field repairs to rival the work of lower tech marines in other legions. Due to this, I've always kept them clean. I'll look up some techniques though and try them out.

Thanks for the feedback on the Contemptor. You guys are right black should pads would be good and it'd tie in with the rest of my army nicely.

Grand master I really like your muted tone can't wait to see more pics.

Kor really like your edge highlighting to, I agree a bit of battle damage would really work.

Cheers

Josh

Kor - that's exactly my thinking; he damage shouldn't be too OTT.

Thanks, PC. Well, here you go!

I know I should be focussing on the tactics and rhinos, but having a lot of fun painting these atm. I've been putting off painting the lighting on the Volkite Culiverns but I took the plunge an here we go! I've made a couple of changes to the Praetor as well, doing the shoulder pads black instead of green, to break up the colour a bit.

One final update for the day, methinks. Everything so far is pretty much done, aside for painting the bases for the Contemptor and Volkite Culiverns marines grey. Next, my Master of Signals, Sicaran Venator, 2 Tactical squads with rhinos and a Land Raider.

Oh my. Awesome. This is some very inspiring stuff Grand_master.

The army is looking great together so far. You've done the FW kits great justice. I love the OSL on the Volkites - its subtle, with the red light, but works fantasticly. I've never tried it before - how hard did you find it? The Pyros are fantastic and I really like you Praetor (though part of me wishes he had a massive hammer :) ) What did you use for the shield?

Anyway, suffice to say I am desparately wishing I could do more painting and post loads of my own stuff, as I'm enjoying this little Salamander gallery. Sadly my real life is in over-drive, but this at least is a welcome distraction!

So now, some little questions and suggestions. What are you going to do with the non-legion shoulder pads? I'm trying to improve my freehand, so I've been adding numbers (I'm doing my force as the third realm- Epithemus) and trying to paint in the nocturnean glyphs they show in massacre. Flames too of couse, but you have plenty sculpted into your gys so far. Have you thought about trying to add some of these touches, particularly on your tactical legionaries who are likely to have a little less heavily decorated armour?

Thanks for the compliment Promethean Cult - I look forward to seeing more of your dread and army.

Also thanks to Telhdrat (though my two pictures form a very small part of this thread) - Your plog is heroic, and it would be great to see more salamanders from you, though I know you've got one or two other legions to work on..... msn-wink.gif

How I did the OSL? A very VERY light drybrush!

I did a base of Khorne red on the weapon itself, then a light drybrush. Then I did it with lighter drybrushes each time with Mephiston red, blazing orange and then a 50:50 blazing orange/ceramite white mix. The later I used VERY sparsely.

Thanks for all the compliments. I'm very lucky in that I'm currently working from home so get to paint in the day. Still, it's going way slower than I had hoped!

Re: the plain shoulder pad, I'm not entirely sure just yet. I'll likely freehand a company number or something. In the meantime, I'm just going to get as many of the minis done as I can, then think about the fine details after.

Yeah, I have 20 tacticals that are pretty bare atm. I've decided though that every marine is going to have the upgrades chests and helmets. They look too awesome not too now I've seen them painted. Wasn't that sure when I saw them unpainted on the FW site to start with.

Post what you can! I know this is all WiP stuff, but if we can inspire others to start up Sallies, that'd be brilliant :)

Yeah I would have preferred to have used a Thunder Hammer but I wanted to use the flamey fist. Besides, nobody expects the Sallies Praetor not to have one :D

The shield is from the 2012 event only Boarding Captain. It's a stopgap until the Firedrakes are our in a couple of weeks

Having a bit of a comedown moment after the weekend. Had a great day's gaming on Saturday. Was a 30k event that 40k armies were allowed to be used (bump up numbers I guess). Unfortunately, pretty much all the 30k players were playing an Apocalypse game, leaving myself, a WE and Mech player out of the remaining 10 or so. I played both games against the new Ork codex. Let's just say, the Salamanders were created for Ork killing! They sure love their meltas, flamers and Volkites. The Culiverns and Pyroclasts were my MVP, and the Praetor with Mantle of the Elder Drake and DFragonscale Storm Shield was able to stand on his own against Ghazghkull and live! It did help rolling the Warlord Trait that gave me Fearless and It Will Not Die, mind :-D

Anyhoo, here's a picture update. The Minis shown so far have been completed now, bases and all. Here's my Master of Siugnal leading the Volkite Culivern squad, plus the Contemptor with his shiny new rubble base. I've also started work on the next units, a tactical squad with Rhino and a Storm Eagle. Both are at the base/layer stage atm. Well, at least till I get my scaly claws onto Vulkan and the Fire Drakes (I really do need to copyright that as a band name)

Well, quick update today as I'm supposed to be on my hols. A quizzical eyebrow was raised by my other half when I put my giant hobby case in the car.

Today, I was a very happy man. My birthday present finally turned up. Took me a good half an hour to build him (and yes, I did notice the dirty great mould line on his left thigh as soon as I took these pictures). And here is The Lord of Drakes himself, Primarch of the Salamanders, Vulkan. He's an absolutely beautiful kit and, biased as I may, the best of the Primarch kits so far. I know a lot of people have complained about his left hand looking odd, but it does really work (also if you mimic the motion of smashing a hammer to the ground, that's pretty much what you'd do with your other hand).

I'll start painting him tomorrow Eve, and I'm very much looking forward to getting my particular scheme into him.
