Fire Golem
You have a nice plog there, and a really nicely developing army. Have you painted any of the upgrade parts yet? How have you found them? So here is one of my tactical legionaries. http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad231/KorVesh/The%20XVIII%20Legion/ea372c77-5503-42a3-9025-8b9dcfeb187d_zps01ad2324.jpg As I said - i've gone bright green. I'm really pleased with them in the flesh, but I must admit that photo against photo I'd probably pick grandmaster's scheme if I was starting again! Still, I like the clean look and the sharp edges. This is probably more of a 'fantasy' paint scheme, a little bit second edition, compared to the more realistic tones of Grand master's. I know some people hate the bright green, but it is an alternative, and hopefully some approve! Anyway, the green is a knorloc green base coat, which is pretty much entirely covered with snot green. I then give it a heavy wash with Thraka green, which darkens it, and increases the depth. I the edge highlight with a 50:50 mix of snot green and scropion green, and a final highlight on the most extreme edges with scorpion green. I hope y'all can translate that to the new colours! http://i939.photobucket.com/albums/ad231/KorVesh/The%20XVIII%20Legion/17fc6c3f-728a-4229-ab15-b66e9200ec19_zps13bc9ab1.jpg Cheers, Kor'vesh I know I'm a little late, but I love the bright green on these Salamanders. It looks awesome. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3759906 Share on other sites
grand_master85
Aye, I really like them and it's nice to see a different way of painting them to how I've done them :) speaking of which... Here's some WiP shots of Vulkan so far. I really wasn't sure how to start and just stared at him for a good hour or so lol. I'm really pleased with him so far, and it just cemented in my mind that the Salamanders are the Legion for me. As I'm down on the south coast, I forget that all the GWs are open 5 random days of the week so now have to wait two days to get the brown paint I need to do the skull (whose name escapes me....K-something) and the pteruges. Fire Golem
He's looking fantastic so far :) I'd be the same, not knowing where to start. He's gonna look excellent when you've finished. Tyrannicide
Gah, it all looks amazing. Absolutely love the green you've gone with. I might have to build at least one Son of Nocturne. Lonewolf86
Grand_master I simply must comment on this thread. Your green colour is absolutely spot on. It is just how the salamanders should look IMO and you make the 17th look very tempting. Your flame effect on the armour is the best I've seen-what is your method? Have you got plans for some vehicles and fire drakes? grand_master85
Thanks a lot, guys! Means a lot, and certainly helps me motivate myself into finishing this army :) Well, I've got a Sicaran Venator, Whirlwind Scorpius and Storm Eagle I've gotten to the layer stage of te greens. The flames are easy peasy :) I drybrush if it's a medium sized space, and blend if it's too small or large. I went for: Mephiston Red Blazing Orange Blazing Orange/Yriel Yellow mix Yriel Yellow Yriel Yellow/Ceramtie White Ceramtie White Obviously start with the red on the whole of the flames, then I drybrush the next stage over but whilst leaving enough if the previous steps showing. Essentially, you have the darker colours at the top of the flames, and the lighter colours at the base :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3760646 Share on other sites

Kor'Vesh
Thanks for the compliment fire golem (and grand master of course) - I keep meaning to put a few more pics up of some of the details I've been adding, nocturne an glyphs, flames, a saturnine ram. I'm just very short on time right now, but hopefully soon. Grandmaster - vulkan looks stunning, and your paint job is already far better than the one we saw from the weekender. I can't wait to see him finished, and get my own hands on him! What legion will you paint the dead guys on his base? I'm going to have at least one as death guard, but torn on the other guy! Also, the cape is glorious - what have you used? Is it essentially a dry-brushing dream? Your fire recipe is identical to mine, which is encouraging - I've only used layering thus far though, so might try the dry brush technique when I find time to hold a paint brush again. Keep up the excellent work! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3761055 Share on other sites
grand_master85
My best mate uses Death Guard so it seems only prudent to paint them as DG :) The cloak was easy, and how I've done all the scales so far; Loren Green base heavily drybrushed Wash with 50/50 Army Painter strong tone (or Agrax Earthshade) and Lahmian Medium Lighter drybrush of Loren Green and Ushabti Bone 50/50 mix Light drybrush of Ushabti bone. Couple of thinned coats of the above wash (just water it down to about half of it) Well, once my local GW is open, I can get the brown paints I need to finish Big V, and then get onto his base then Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3761273 Share on other sites
grand_master85
Another quick update on Vulkan. I saw quick, he's pretty much done now! I've just got Kesare's skull, the pteruges and the big mans face to do, and a few finishing touches, and he will be complete! I've really enjoyed painting him up. Was scary to start with but it's been so easy and he's essentially just a bigger, fancier version of the Pyroclasts. Next up, I'll be ordering a squad of the Fire Drakes and I'm really looking forward to those :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3762450 Share on other sites

Adra'Melek
Stuff like this makes me inspired on one hand and depressed on the other as I'm no where near that good :) :( persistence and practice. Persistence and practice. How did you do the scales of the cloak they look great and I've never need able to get mine that good (using the Salamanders models for my alt Legion and have painted up some of my wife's Lizardmen in the past). grand_master85
Thanks chaps :) in finishing hi today and will post the final results tomorrow. The cloaks and scales, yeah I've been practising on Dark Elf corsair cloaks and the Pyroclasts. The green cloak: Base with Loren Forest, drybrushed heavily Washed with a 2:1 mix of Army Painter strong Tone (Agrax Earthshade equivalent so use that if you have it) and Lahmian Medium A lighter drybrush on te scales with a 1:1 mix of Loren Forest and Ushabti Bone Drybrush over the tops of the scales with Ushabti Bone Then two watered down coats of the above brown wash (I find a 50/50 mix of the above mix with water works great) over the mini, et voila! The red was simply base Khorne red. Wash with the above brown wash. Then drybrush Mephiston red, then a lighter 1:1 mix of Mephiston Red and Blazing Orange (or the new equivalent) and finally wash again with a watered brown wash mix. grand_master85
Well, the holidays are over and Vulkan has been completed finally! Rather pleased with him. I'll be debuting him in a game this week. Against Horus! Should be interesting... Next, my birthday Fire Drakes... grand_master85
Haha funny thing is, the more detailed the mini, the better I am at painting :D besides, FW have an airbrush and Tamiya paint obsession, and I paint strictly by hand ;) Thanks though, guys. Really enjoyed painting him to the point where I have a spare I was gonna sell but might have to just paint one again lol. grand_master85
Here's the tester for Fire Drakes. Not quite complete, need to add the brown wash to the shield and darken the silver on the hammer. Also think that the flames underneath the drakes head should be painted as flames as well and not just bronze. Was undecided on the flames to start with. I know the Forge World scheme is a bit different but as they're called Fire Drakes, I deemed it prudent to paint some actual flames on them! Although it has been noted that the red shield makes the scheme look a bit Christmassy as well, so might have to make it a lot darker red (was more trying to tie the colours in with Vulkan as these guys are his bodyguard). grand_master85
Very brief update. I've darkened the red on the shield to make it a little less garish, and I've also added flames under the drakes head on the chest, which balances out the mini much better. Overall, I'm very pleased with the mini :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293670-salamanders-paint-scheme/page/3/#findComment-3771545 Share on other sites
Koriel
They look just as good as the rest of your models, and I must compliment you again on the awesome shade of green. Oh a question btw, is there any model in the kit that is a designated fire drake master?
