Has the horus heresy started to ebb in appeal?

I am not being negative or complaining about FW/GW.

What I'm asking is do the releases still give the same excitement as it used to even just a year ago?

With the release of 7th edition and waiting on book 4 from FW are we still as excitable by the releases every Friday?

I've felt that the community aren't as united and happy with book releases or model releases.

The release of the fire drakes has barely received any feedback and there are always criticisms in regards to these models.

I've recently been lurking in the shadows feeling motivation slipping as it always does in it's ebbs and flows with my personal life.

But I'm truly wondering how the die hards are feeling and if the constant sneak peaks are ruining the release for the general public.

These are just my thoughts but I'm wondering how my brothers are feeling

My interest has not lessened, but it hasn't grown either.  For me it's the lack of 7th FAQ for 30k...the game completely changed and while most questions can be reasoned out; there are others that really need some FW input.

This feeling might also be the 'shrinking' of GW presence and what it could mean for 30k.  FW started strong but they have slowed in releases and pushed books back.

Personally, I think the fans of the XVIII Legion are just a really finicky lot. I've personally liked just about every Salamanders release while they seem to be routinely derided by the staunch Salamanders supporters. Hell, they got some of the best looking chest and head upgrade kits so far!

Some of the weakest, imho, are the disco-dancing Ashen Circle and Night Raptors(both coincidentally sculpted by the same guy), and the Imperial Fists head upgrade was just dreadful. It looked like some knock-off from a 3rd party garage shop.

I'm still excited and can't wait to see some stuff start to show up for other legions that don't much represented yet, like the Iron Warriors and Alpha Legion.

Maybe then it's just the forums and sites that are very influx at the moment, I personally can't start my next project till I know the exacts of 7th and the HH.

I'm also not interested in playing small scale games which seems to be the general consensus in the area (1500-2000pts) it's got me looking at other avenues of hobby which I'm not so keen on.

My kid cousin has started HH Iron hands and I'm happy to game with him because he loves seeing multiple super heavies etc on the table.

My biggest problem is that as much as I love the setting the novellas aren't truly progressing into new territory for me, some characters aren't expanding and some story lines have been abandoned.

Model releases are still exceptional quality yet I feel that the truth of the matter is that the weekenders and sneak peaks are killing the finished release for me.

I'm looking forward to solar auxilia and more admech but it's still a long time till we reach that.

I just don't feel as excited as I used to, maybe it's me maybe it's something else, the hobby just sort of feels rushed

The horus heresy is awesome. Fw is awesome. The books are awesome. Gaming is awesome. My attitude is awesome. And yes, I am awesome.

That you are brother but it's killing me getting a gaming table all my BA restarting my WE finishing 2 titans and building admech.

And it's blasphemous I know but I'm playing relic with the young one and pokemon and still doing work overtime gym illness and squeezing in hobby.

But I'm getting off track,

I feel that maybe the sneak peaks need to be limited leaks rumours etc, it's okay to see an idea of future projects but we all know vulkan looks boss and it takes away from the actual release.

I remember the suprise from ferrus angron and fulgrim they were great. Horus was a brilliant release as it was just the face, then we got lorgar finished and no one knew, mort in all honesty is a great model but my opinion on the scythe is my own opinion.

They just didn't try with hiding vulkan and it's sort of annoying, same with the admech sneak peeks.

I like the idea of a sketch as a sneak peek not here's the model.

for me, the interest in the Heresy era has certainly died over the last year or two...

its the novels. they are either awesome or waste paper (my opinion), with very few somewhere inbetween.

then limited edition nonsense is released, meaning if I want the story of the expensive plastic models I either overpay for a novella, wait multiple years for an anthology, or just get humped. Thanks BL. good way to crap on your audience.

oh yea, maybe Im a fanboy, but I found the RG heresy rules to be disappointing, especially when compared to their brother Legions. No wonder we lost 77,000 Marines at the DSM.

all just my opinion folks.

WLK

This isn't a rant or dog this is simply asking if others feel that the leaking of new models and the excitement over general releases isn't as big as it used to be.

I know for example there's barely any mention of the damnation of pythos and that a lot if people aren't super pumped like they used to be

Remember, it's the middle of the summer for a lot of us, too. I don't know about y'all, but when the weather drops to -20 degrees, I get real 'inspired' to stay inside and paint.

When it's 70 degrees, sunny, and sun never sets..... yeah. Bonfire and whiskey time. Sorry, 30k. I'll be hanging with you again soon.

Lucky yanks I'd kill for some warmth right now

I'm not sure which Salamanders fans are unhappy with the new Forgeworld models, but I at least am VERY pleased with them. I'm working on some Pyroclasts now, and they are stunning models. The drakes, dread and upgrade kits look stunning and Vulkan looked IMMENSE in the previews. We are very lucky.

@Jaspcat - I think that maybe, Forgeworld have spoiled us a little. They are so good and open that in all honesty we just know what releases are coming. They are still great, but the excitement is a little less than it could be. In an ideal world FW would release things a little bit faster to get more surprises, but maybe we're just being greedy. I think there are more people starting heresy armies than ever (look at the forum's points pledges for the E Tenebrae Lux), and the quality of the work is some of the most inspiring around.

So, I'm still enthused, and I think that people are in general. It would be nice to get a few more surprises, and for the 7th transition to be tidied up, but we'd have been so happy to have what we have now a year or two ago so we should try and keep that in perspective!

It WOULD be nice if they did throw us some release curve balls like : "Hey you know that <insert Fluff Character Name Here> Model we're releasing? Yeah?! Well here! Have his arch nemesis to boot!"

Now I'm not saying they should do that EVERY time, but 2-4 times a year might be good enough and leave us with enough to speculate about what might be coming...though when the surprises aren't what people wanted that could go south pretty fast...

As for the Topic at hand : I'd say I'm getting even more enthused as time progresses. With the sneak peak at the Vulkan Model and just the idea of what Dorn and (very likely) Sigismund miniature might look like, I'm a slow cooker of Hype - I stew in my own enthusiasm.

Has the horus heresy started to ebb in appeal?

From a personal standpoint, my appeal in regular 40k / GW has completely ebbed away to nothing and I'm only excited by 30k / FW. I'm constanlty looking on the ForgeWorld page on a Friday to see what the new release of the week is, or checking my mail on a Monday to see what's happening (if anything) on the blog.

I think the biggest thing that is draining excitement (or perceived excitement) on the boards is that there are a number of big showcases where FW can provide upcoming releases (Open Day, Games Day, HH Weekender, etc), and once we've seen these either at seminars or as part of WIP pieces on display there's a sudden wait for the impending release date. We get the buzz on these days (and if you look back to the previous big-3 events that FW participate in, there's a lot of forum chat and excitement), which tends to fizzle out up to thier release. In order for us to get excited on a random Friday then they have to release something that nobody has really seen before - but those are typically the pieces that everyone wants to see early.

I'd say it's nearly a lose-lose for FW when it comes to showcasing upcoming releases versus keeping things in their back pocket. How do you keep a fanbase on their toes with new releases, when people are paying money to go to large events with an express desire to see these models as part of their experience.

Unfortunately with the HH Weekender just happened in the past month or so, there's a lot that's been shown that's on the horizon for the next year. We have a fully finished Vulkan, as seen by everyone now that it's been featured on their blog post, but we've also got:

  • Gol Vorbak (nearing completion when shown)
  • Cerastus Knight variants
  • Gorgon Terminators
  • Solar Auxillia (30k era Guard)
  • Mechanicum Transport and Magus
  • HH Book 4 - Conquest

And that's just the stuff I can remember.

We're also pretty close to Games Day UK now (should be in the next couple of months, should rumours of the events demise be exaggeratted), which again there would be an expectation of new shiny previews. Last year we got a competely new Primarch in Lorgar, but we also got some new items on pre-release (remember seeing those Iron Hands tacticals for the first time a couple of days before the event, that was pretty cool). No doubt there's a couple of things being kept in reserve for that.

Ultimately I think we're a fickle bunch at times. We berate GW for not providing any future roadmap / release schedule that we can get excited about, yet at times we also have a dig that FW isn't kepeing us on our toes by keeping us in the dark on some things and giving us surprises more often.

Black Library is a different kettle of fish in my opinion. I love the Heresy series of books, but the fascination with limited Novellas is killing it for me. Most of the time we're talking about an item that is ~120 pages at most and bears little importance to the main storyline, yet you feel compelled to pay the £30 price tag for it because you may just miss out on a small nugget of information that may (or may not) be important to the storyline in the future, and may not have the opportunity to buy it at a future date. It just grates me personally.

Jasp, sounds like your suffering a bit from hobby burnout. Maybe work on something a little different for a while till the spark come back. I work on Inquisitor stuff when I am sick of Space Marines.

I do agree with you on the sneak pics though. Friday used to be exciting, what will we get today. But recently its stuff we have seen hundreds of pics for. Now that may be because the popularity of events like the HH weekender has grown so the exposure of the tests models is higher. Still I would like a surprise release, some RG or AL stuff.

I think the excitement for the tabletop aspect of the hobby is still pretty high. People are still shaking in their booties to see the model of their favorite character, or paint that new unit of BAMFs that just dropped. And brains are just awash in the conversion possibilities. I mean, who doesn't want to take Arm 1, connect it to Torso A, stack it on Legs Y, and top it off with that awesome Helmet 9? I know I do!

But the novels? Curse them and their awesomey disappointingness! The first handful came out, and the storyline was just chugging along, moving at a fairly good clip. We were getting an inside look at something we had just assumed would purposely be kept vague and mysterious till the end of time. What better way to allow hobbyists to get creative, right? And now, a couple dozen novels, anthologies, and a whole boatload of enovellas and audio dramas later, one can't help but ask, "Are we at Terra yet?" And we still have legions who haven't gotten their fair share of the limelight. I know there's a bunch of stuff to that needs to be covered, but I also think they've reached the market saturation point for novellas, limited editions, etc.

I just want to sprawl out on the bed with my 'legacy' paperback that I've dodged spoilers on for almost a year for...

I see what you're saying, and I'm about halfway there with you. I'd prefer to see some of this energy directed towards full length novels, as I've never been a fan of audio books, and I also prefer a book over an E-book (no batteries, heh). At the end of the day, though, BL is making a killing on those books, and that's financing better novels later down the road, so I'll take what I get thrown at me.

I think I've just become much more selective with my choice of novels from BL. I used to nab anything that came off their shelves, bar none, but as I've gotten older, I've slowly and painfully learned that it's better to spend my money on something I know will be of value to my fluff-gland, over hoping for nuggets of cool stuff here or there. So, if I know the author is my cup 'o' joe, and the story is up my alley, I'll buy it. If not, walk on by, and enjoy the glory that is internet spoilers for the nuggets of cool fluff. If I get burned, I learn. If the story kicks ass, I'll chuck more money at that author later on.

Some things drag me in, even amongst the Limited Edition books, though. I threw money, hard, at Daenyathos, because I am an unashamed Soul Drinker fan (curse me if you wish), and a fluff whore to five points of history in the general timeline (Unification, Horus Heresy, Scouring, Age of Apostasy, and the Badab Tyrranicide) of which that novel actually showed a glimpse of the Apostasy, a rare treat. It was worth it to me, and i enjoyed it, even if the final novel in the series kinda fell flat for me.

Aurelian was another. Sheer curiousity and the respect I have for Mr. Dembski-Bowden's writing stuck the fish-hook in, and I got reeled in from there. Totally worth the cash, to me.

The one I'm still screaming praises to the sky about, though, is Tallarn: Executioner. Amazing writing, even for a short, and a story that left me wanting more so bad, I started scratching like an addict coming down off a fix. Mr. French ever writes another LE book about Tallarn again, I'll not only drop a fat stack to purchase it, I'll personally fly to his house and hand-deliver a bottle of the finest bourbon I can find.

It is what it is, I guess. Just realize that the HH books aren't the winding road to the end goal any longer; they are branching off, and we're not going to see an end anytime soon. Pick and choose your battles, folks. Literally.

Part of it might be due to the fact that after the HH weekender, we basically know almost all the stuff FW is working on at the moment - we suddenly got a huge info dump, which was incredibly awesome, but that means from now on, its kinda 'oh that unit that was almost finished at the weekender has been released - cool!' alas, this means there aren't any real surprises coming up (it would seem at least).

I'm kinda stuck at the moment in terms of the Legionary / Vehicle designs for my HH thread - knowing that Conquest features the Iron Hands (and having seen all the awesome DG / SoH profiles that it contains), its kind of a case of do I spend hours constructing an image of an Iron Hands unit, when its entirely possible ther'll be an official version in Conquest which will be infinitely better. That said, once those pics start appearing on 40k wiki after Conquest is on sale, I'm gonna have a censored.gif field day.

Yeah, my experience of 30k as a hobby is absurdly atypical :P

Buck up, brother. This is meant in a friendly way, not as a drill sergeant's "Buck up, suck up ... come back when you @#% up"

We can't expect to be as excited as the first time FW started releasing HH. It may happen with whatever the next big release will be, but we can't sit on our laurels holding out breath.

7th edition brings some changes, but HH is meant to be played as HH (the bigger the game the better, I say). True that most of us may not be able to find and play such games with the regularity as 40K games, but we make the best of it.

Releases are NEVER as soon as we'd like them to be. As for the books, writing is as writing does. Take what inspires you and treat the rest as propaganda. Warhammer 30K/40K is all about points of view and making your own history as winners often do.

No offense, but not every one is building Salamanders and Fire Drakes. I'm still pining for a legion that doesn't even get to Terra for the big showdown and probably will get less treatment than a head and torso upgrade pack.

Don't let yourself slip too far. It's easier to let yourself slide. Don't do it. Easy isn't for any of us in this hobby. We love our tough as nails space marines for a reason.

I may not be a die hard as many others here, but these are my thoughts.
