Battle Brief: Astra Militarum (1500pts)

Hello all,

I had another big game in my escalation league at the local game store. This time I challenged a player that was high up the list and currently undefeated. With a Record of 8-1-1 I was feeling confident. He had already beaten a few guys on my team so I wanted to try my hand against a more experienced player.

He was a great guy to play. Very experienced, playing in over 300 games and many competitive tournaments. For this game, he was preparing for a local Tournament called Astronomicon, a 1500pt two day tourney, and he wanted to test out his list. He sent his list to me in advance and wanted me to spec out against him.

My list looked something like this:

2x RP, Divination and Telekinesis (Key power)

3 x 5H, 2 Razorback, One DP

1x 10GH, DP

10x WG, 6x combi melta, DP, CML, 2x combi plas (RB with GH)

2x ML LFs.

Vindicator

His list looked something like this (not great with other codex units)

Pask HQ,punisher cannon tank with one Plasma Russ tank

2x chimeras with 2x plas vets I think

2x mortar teams

3x hydra (flamer platforms things)

The game was standard deployment, 6 MoW tactical objectives.

This was an interesting game, and I ended up winning handily.

I won first turn, and when he saw my list he decided to keep almost everything in reserve. This was a decent plan to nuder my alpha strike with the goal of exposing my troops to the flamers he had brought. It backfired. In the first turn I dropped my two GH pods, landing on objectives and destroying his mortar teams. I used my Razorback to boost across the field and take two more objectives. I was sitting on 5/6 on the first turn. I got 4 points from my TacOs and FB in the first turn.

SInce he had nothing on the table for my second turn, I scooted around to another objective, and ran my GH into long lines along his board edge, trying to bottle neck deployment. My third pod landed, disappointed by nothing to shoot. I used the WG pod to set the front edge of deployment, covering one of two places left for him to deploy. I gained another 2 pts for TacO which gave me a commanding lead.

His reserve rolls were unluck and only a few transports and hydras made it onto the field. I was impressed with the amount of firepower with the plas guns, las arrays and flamers everywhere, but he could only chip away at my troops.  My next turn netted me another point, and I pressured and popped some of his vehicles. On the third turn his tank came in. The brought so much fire but he was forces to shoot at my LF in cover in an effort to Slay the Warlard. Pask and plasma killed all but my RP and one LF, but it was enough to deny him any points, and forced him to ignore my combi meltas.

On turn four I put the game away. I knew he would not be running any librarians, so I specced out two RP, for the first time I drew from TK powers hoping it would help bust vehicles. I didn't like any powers I drew (Crush, Assail, Psychic Malestrom). I go for broke with my RP and roll for the 3 charges for the storm, I am stricken with perils of the warp, but pass my leadership test and suffer no ill effects. The same could not be said for pask. I drop the template on pask and plas tank unit and with some excellent rolling I hit and destroy both vehicles, cutting the head off the snake and silencing his best weapons.

At this point he conceded, I had 9 points to his 0 and he had little left to offer.

I was rather fortunate this game and on another day his list would have been threatening, but he learned a valuable lesson about TacO's and the perils of staying off the table.

I have promised him a rematch, so I will keep you up dated.

Thanks for listening.

Just a couple of things. I think you mean Hellhounds, not Hydras. The Hellhound is the flame tank, and I think I can see one in the picture, whereas the Hydra is the AA tank with 4 big autocannon (and the new stupid open topped design...).

Also I can see 3 Leman Russ hulls on the picture, but you only listed two in his list.

What was the 10th WG packing? 6 combi melta, 1 CML and 2 combi plasma leaves one guy without extra gear. Ablative wound?

Otherwise, that kind of sounds like you got one of those lucky curbstomp games, which are kinda fun occasionally so congrats, netting 2 Russ with the mealstrom is proper jammy devil.gif . Just be worried about your next game, cos karma will be out to even the score msn-wink.gif .

Nice job! I have yet to use a RP in 7e yet. I use WPs more often or Logan when running my Pod lists.

I agree with you. I am playing a Chaos Demon army this week, and I will only bring WP or perhaps Ulrik. He will have too many denial dice to get my powers off. Its a tough gamble, because I want to be able to deny his conjuring, but I'm worried a RP would be wasted points against his 3 demon princes

You are right about the names. I was mistaken. The other WG had a powerfist, but it was a non factor. The idea was the combis would soak up the wounds, and the RP and powerfist could make some noise the second turn.

The other Russ was killed by Vindicator, LFs and Razorbacks in the same turn as Pask.

The picture shows us before deployment and unfortunately I didn't take another.

Nice work, brother!!

The battle report also really show the true power of a drop pod. Being able to pinpoint areas and use that to score or destroy is amazing!!

Well done!!

End of Line

Now that I have my specialized combi wolf guard my pod list is more dangerous. They are so versatile and pair well with a RP or WP. The pods are popped rather easily as an open topped vehicle, but the were a real pain for my oppenent, distracting his fire, capturing/obscuring objectives and clogging the back field.

congrats mate, nice work

he was running an imteresting list, not something i would take personally. not many cheap bodies to throw away. and 3 hell hounds?. pask in a punisher is pretty damn awesome though.

The Pask in Punisher was awesome. He Rolled 20 rending dice with "preferred enemy" space wolves. It was crazy. I bet he could pop a landraider with that gun on a good roll.
