leonhart040
Hi, I'm starting to paint some space wolves (yes, I've bought Stormclaw, couldn't resist :p) and I noticed that golden parts are not exactly gold. SW look like space vikings, that's obvious, but I think gold wasn't the most common material in armor and weapons at that time. For this I want to paint all the golden parts with a more copper/bronze color. I've seen the paint packs in GW website, but before using or buying any of those, has anyone tried them? Any color combination similar to a bronzish (?) Gold? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/ Share on other sites
Dantay VI
Ogryn flesh wash instead of gryphonne sepis, makes it more brassy, bronze. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3745640 Share on other sites
Wolfface
Agreed gold is too shiney for the SW. Try Hashut Copper, Agrax earthshade, then light drybrush with silver, runefang silver i use. Makes it look more tarnised Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3748733 Share on other sites
vvtt123
The way gw made it was like this Base: Balthasar Gold Wash: Agrax Earthshade Layer: Gehannas' Gold Highlight: Runefang Steel Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3917775 Share on other sites
Bryan Blaire
If you like the way I did my gold here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299262-new-additions-to-the-drakeslayers/ On the basic Blood Claw, I did the "ancient/weathered gold" as follows: Base Balthasar Gold -> layer all but recesses with Gehenna Gold -> coat entire gold portion w/Agrax Earthshade -> edge highlight with Runefang Steel On the a Wolf Guard Pack Leader, I did the more "burnished ancient gold" as: Base Balthasar Gold -> layer all but recesses with Gehenna Gold -> coat entire gold portion w/Agrax Earthshade -> highlight a bit more than the edges with Auric Armor Gold -> edge highlight with pure metallic/iridescent acrylic medium to produce spots of extreme shine Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3919387 Share on other sites
Amarog
I just used the base of Balthazar gold and wash of agrax earthshade. I also prefer a more bronze tone than a super shiny gold look. http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f160/lelltomgeorge/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20150107_242101250_zps7qoybgdy.jpg Ignore the lack of other paint still very much in progress. But it keeps a bronzy finish without the gehennas gold on top. Fangbanger
Using a blue wash is good to give it a wethered look Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3941170 Share on other sites
+Grimdark Prince Adam+
You will find the recipe I use for the bronze gold and also other tutorials in my plog, but I will also write it here: Base Balthasar Gold, wash Agrax Earthshade (mix it well beforehand!!!), then drybrush Sycorax Bronze and highlight drybrush Necron Compound. And thats it Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3941446 Share on other sites
Spazmonkey
I use Gehennas gold and agrax earthshade. Mine are the marines grey gold and yellow on the page Bryan linked above. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/299262-new-additions-to-the-drakeslayers/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3941986 Share on other sites
Dantay VI
Probably a little late to the party, but here is my golds. Balthasar gold, washed with ogryn flesh, or more recently reikland flashshade, then layered balthasar gold, more fleshshade, Balthasar again layered but further out for shadow, then lots of thin layers of balthasar/gehennaauric gold. Final touches of mithril silver.. The Knight interior was Tinbtz with a black wash, then drybrush tinbitz, and balthasar gold, then sycorax. Might try some verdigris at some stage.. Stoic Raptor
I've noticed that the most important things in determining the final appearance, are the color of the undercoat and the color of the wash. I always undercoat any areas to be painted gold, usually with P3 Bloodtracker Brown. My gold of choice for a warm, burnished appeaance is P3 Rhulic Gold. Then I apply a flesh wash and highlight again with the Rhulic Gold. Other brands have a similar color I'm sure. This goes nicely with SW colors. Here's how it looks on a work in progress: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293769-painting-space-wolves-metal/#findComment-3956269 Share on other sites
