Normal Land Raider or the FW MKIIB One?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth the extra money to go full hog and get the MkIIb Land Raider from FW or just the normal plastic one from Games Workshop.  I mean £67 for a land raider when there's a lot more unique and special things going for around the same amount is what's causing me to be reticent about committing to it.

I'm already planning on getting a contemptor with dual twin linked lascannons and apothecaries but I'm thinking ahead to my 1.5k list (below) which uses a land raider to add some additional fire power but to also transport some cataphractii. There's two sides of me struggling against each other, one that things if I'm going to heresy I should do it properly, but the other part of me is saying that's a lot of money to splash on something that can be gotten cheaper for not much difference.

What do you think?

Diabolist - Lightning Claws/ Burning Lore / Melta Bombs - 145
Chaplain -  Burning Lore - 115

Gal Vorbak (x5) - 200
Cataphractii Terminators (5) - 3 Power Fists / 2 Power Swords / Reaper Autocannon - 205
Contemptor Mortis - Two twin-linked lascannons - 185
2 Apothecaries- 90

Legion Tactical Squad (x10) - Nuncio Vox - 160
Legion Tactical Squad (x10) - 150

Land Raider Phobos - 250

Total - 1500

I'm using the regular Land Raider for my Iron Warriors as I have one sat in a box needing building :) I like the look of all the Land Raiders and saving £67 is a bonus (and however much a regular Raider is these days lol). Be nice if Forgeworld still did the conversion packs where you just got the resin pieces :(

I recently got a mkiib and I was really really lucky it that the main two sponsons housings and top sections were straight. Its a nice kit. I really enjoy the finished product. Just had to put some rectangles of styrene sheet (0.75 mm?) In the gun turrets to give enough friction to stop the guns drooping.

There's no difference as far as the game goes, but it's all in the aesthetics.

I see, this is one of those "special snowflake" purchases then.  I don't want to knock the abilities of the FW model production staff, but these aesthetic purchases seem largely for making your forces look better and more unique (especially given the price tags).

Well, yeah. On that same note, these are all 'special snowflake' purchases, considering that we're spending enough cash to feed a small family on a little plastic tank.

I'd rather wait a month, and buy the 'special snowflake', than have a tank in my army that I think is so-so. Heck, I just picked up one on Ebay for $30 American, which ain't so bad. A little repair work, and It'll be ready to knock down the Eternity gate.

Funny thing is, a regular Landraider in Australia comes to about £60.20 according to current conversion rates.

This is why I decided to start a heresy army, it's almost the same price to get a similar amount of stuff, and it's a much more important story to me.

I doubt the difference is so little for you though, so it's all a matter of what you prefer. There were both versions active at the time of the Heresy.

There are those who believe high "do-it-yourself" ability is the mark of a better 40k gamer, such as those who want to convert everything themselves or make their miniatures more unique through personalized conversions (such as creating the embossed chapter logos on Rhino/Land Raider doors yourself instead of buying them through Forge World).  Sometimes they can go pretty far, such as scratch-building the Tau Manta from Forge World.

I personally would want some unique rules to benefit me if I'm getting such an expensive miniature.  Some of those FW-only models for Space Marines include Chaplain Dreadnoughts and Deathstorm Drop Pods.  Models like those aren't just pretty sculpts--they also give you an ingame edge (albeit not an enormous one) and I would feel that kind of model gives you more value for your money.
