loadout for wolf guard pack leaders..

So... I've started wondering what our 'sergeants' might look like in our new dex.

If storm claw is anything to go by, it's looking likely that we have a character built in to our packs, just like vanilla marines do. It also seems quite plausible our pack leaders are the ones that get special mêlée weapons.

Here's one possibility that I'm speculating about. It's consistent with storm claw but just made up.

Wolf guard terminators

Approx. 40 points per model

Storm bolter and power fist

Any number can upgrade to chainfist for 5 puts

Can switch to wolf claws for free

Can switch to th+ss for 5 points

Pack leader is a character and comes with a power weapon (perhaps frost weapon) perhaps has access to mêlée weapons list in armoury or other extra options

Grey hunters

Bp plus either bolter or chainsword

Can buy ultragrit for 1pt

Pack leader can be upgraded to wolf guard for 10 points

Pack leader has access to mêlée weapons list

Looks like there may be no wolf standards (pack leader model has one but didn't get it in rules)

Blood claws

Rage instead of headstrong

Pack leader can be upgraded to wolf guard for 10 (but weirdly still ws/BS 3)

Mêlée weapons etc

Anyway... I'm wondering whether these wgpl guys might get access to a wide range of weapons and storm shields etc, as per current dex? Might be kinda cool, if our gh Pl is able to take a storm shield for challenges at a reasonable price.

While I like the idea I feel it takes away from the idea of the wolves hunting in packs guided by those wolves who have earned the recognition of their lord. I loved having the option of keeping my wolf guard together for a nice punching unit or spreading them out to improve my other squads.

I don't think Egil and Hengist, in the case of the known characters from Stormclaw are Wolf Guard Pack Leaders, but are rather the "Alphas" of their packs.  So, Egil is a Blood Claw (hence the WS and BS of 3 for him), but he's the top-dog of the pack, and has an extra Attack to show for being the natural leader, and probably best fighter of the group.  He has risen to the top of his pack, in the same sense that the Wolf Lord has risen to the top position of the whole Great Company.

Functionally, they're going to act like the basic Sergeant of codex-adherent Tactical Squads, etc., which is just fine by me.

What remains to be seen, however, is if Wolf Guard can still be split off to go "take-over" one of these packs, when their greater experience is required/warranted, when the Wolf Lord assesses that a given pack has to complete a critical mission, and probably could use a little help from one of the Great Company's finest.

What also remains to be seen is how the special close combat weapon distribution will work.  We know from the units in Stormclaw that these new pack leaders (Egil and Hengist) have access to special close combat weapons, but will anybody else also have access?  Or, have the days of the "hidden power axe" finally come to an end?  Nor did we get any hint of whether a model in each pack will still be able to take the ubiquitous Mark of the Wulfen.

My guess is that the pack leaders will get access to some portion of the tables in the Armoury, but not all.  I expect actual Wolf Guard to get access to a broader selection.

No offence, but I hope you're wrong. What you're proposing just makes multiple TDAWG with power/frost weapons unusable, as well as everyone getting more expensive. Wolf Claws should be cheaper than power fists, so having them a 'free' upgrade like that isn't a good idea. What you've written also as WG of any stripe losing access to combi weapons, which would be absolutely terrible. Compulsory PW is silly for Codex Terminators, and expanding to Wolves would not make it a good idea.

WGPL being a squad upgrade is something we should have had last dex though, I hated the minimum three requirement in small games, plus having to waste an elite slot to be able to take veteran sergeants.

But ultimately these changes would just be making us Codex marines, and I don't think any of us want that. On a more optimistic note, I'm sceptical that extrapolating from Stormclaw will lead to accurate information about our codex.

I mostly hope I'm wrong too. It's hardly a wish list. So no offense taken.

I'd prefer 35 points with power weapon with a 5 point power fist option (10 point chainfist) to the above. But I left that out because only the sergeant actually has a power weapon in SC. Which makes me wonder if we'll mirror codex marines in that respect.

The free wolf claws and 5 point th+ss options above were listed as a mirror of c:sm. Note, I was referring to dual wolf claws in the OP. That's 8 points cheaper than the current dex price which is 48 points. The th+ss option is 18 points cheaper than the current dex price. So I'm not 100% sure what you mean by more expensive? Again though, it's just a suspicion/guess and not in any way a wishlist.

I also didn't touch on combi-weapons or ranged weapons at all. I didn't mean to suggest we won't get them. I really hope we do.

I don't take storm claw as gospel. But it's what we have to go on and is certainly food for thought if nothing else.

Ah, I see, my bad. I was thinking swapping the fist for one claw, like we can currently (and SMs can't, which probably should've been a clue unsure.png ) for 5 points on a 33 point base, giving us a cost of 38 points, rather than the 40 I thought you were talking about.

I tend to think if the terminator load out changes it'll be to wolfclaw stormbolter base, then have frosblades as a free switch (so regular power weapons out). I do agree that stormclaw shouldn't be viewed as gospel, its a weird kit cause its a great deal for vets, but the missions are wrote like a starter.
