Stepper's first steps in 30k

Hail brothers,

After spending almost a year thinking what HH army to choose i finally went with the Sons of Horus.

(That's until the sons of the Lion get there moment of forgeworld glory ^^ )

My goal for now is a relatively small army set just before Horus went bonkers :D, cause let's face it i'm a servant of Emperor not the fickle pantheon of the eightfold path.

On there way to me right now are the Warmaster himself and the legion command set.

Probably not the best mini's to start an army with, but hey they have the looks and as I'm in the hobby for the painting and modelling there my perfect start.

However in the future i'd like to be able to play some games with the SoH so i'd really like some advise on how to build a gameworthy army as i really have no clue where to start.

Fluff is more important to me than the ultimate "winning" list, therefore i ask you my brothers to help me out and set me in the right direction.

Thnx in advance,

Stepper

I'd say start with getting the 3 books for more fluff and the rules. Read through them and get to looking at how you want your army to run. 1d4chan put this the best; think of 30k as Craftworld: Space Marines.

What that means is that all units in 30k are highly specialized and HAVE to work well together to achieve your goal. Since these are Legions, we're talking about ~50k + marines under each Primarch and while some forces are more specialized in a certain aspects than others, they can still do what any other Legion can do. Maybe not as well or proficiently but they can.

Ex: You like Jetbikes. You like World Eaters. You want to make a Jetbike World Eaters List. However it's been ingrained in your (and pretty much everybody else's mind) that its not fluffy. Well not to worry, the Sons of Angron numbered in the Tens, if not hundreds, of thousands so go ahead and do it!

So, what this means is that any Idea you can come up with in regards to organizing a coherent force is viable and fluffy - though you could argue that some are more so than others but that's more subjective opinion than anything else.

Another sticking point - and something that's VERY important to keep in mind when writing 30k lists is that squad sizes are generally larger than 40k counterparts and start off with you paying a premium for the base number but having a reduced "per additional X unit cost".

Ex: 10 man tac squad is 150 points. Each additional marine is 10 points, with a maximum of 20 marines. This means that 1 20 man squad is 250 points before upgrades. You could take 2 10 man squads but the cost, at that point, would be 300 points. That's 50 less points of upgrades to spread throughout the rest of you list in terms of upgrades or additional units.

---- Mods, I know we're not really supposed to be posting about the cost of units and the like from GW stuff but hopefully you can understand that it was done so that I could make a concrete and understandable example. At least, I hope its understandable tongue.png

Another thing is that although these are Space Marines, we DO NOT have "And They Shall Know No Fear". This is something not everyone realizes at first and can really make/break a list that focuses a lot on infantry blobs.

While I could go into more detail in this post, I'd rather direct you to the HH tactica subforum where there are lots of discussions going on about what goes on in the Horus Heresy.

Also take a look at the HH Army Lists since that'll give you a good idea on how armies will look like at various points levels.

Now that the Rules are out of the way, Fluff wise, your more or less given free reign on how you want to handle your specific force. Want to make SoH that stay Loyal and later become a Second (or Later) founding chapter with mysterious and dubious origins? Go right ahead! You could use those future chapter markings as Company specific Heraldry to tie it all in.

Welcome to the Horus Heresy!

As far as fluff goes, you will at least want to invest in the opening trilogy from Black Library - Horus Rising, False Gods, and Galaxy in Flames. The Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus take center stage in all three books. Then you should consider Forge World's Book I - Betrayal.

Good luck and have fun!

So you're planning to give your fealty to the First Among Equals rather then the First Son:

The First Legion shall be watching you closely...

@ Relict: Have the collectors editions at home and have read them many a time :D, that's why i eventually went for the SoH actually. Reading Vengeful Spirit atm, awesome read but it has me thinking a bit more herertical as i'm loving the Lupercali ^^

@ depthcharge12: Awesome Son of the Lion there! and as the above comment shows, i really am in need of some close scrutiny. So i welcome the watchful "eye" of the First Legion msn-wink.gif

Cheers,
Stepper
