Shopping/Building for 7th Codex

I have always been a pretty big proponent of shopping wisely for an army build.  My own purchases and building have been put on hold in anticipation of the new up and coming codex due to the great unknown of what will be legal and what will not.  For example, a great number of my GH packs are a mix of bolters and bolt pistols which is rumored to no longer be possible unless bolt pistols are bought additionally.  However, I do think that some things can still be applied.  I will update as things become more solid via releases and rumors.

1.  One for One

Buying one GH Pack and one SM Tactical box still is one of the smartest buys.  Our GH sprues are lacking any heavy weapons as they are not needed except for our Long Fang Packs.  Our sprues also have no melta guns, which are standard in the SM tactical box as well as a flamer.  In addition with the new SM Tactical sprues, the possibility exists in our new codex that we will get access to grav weaponry.  Lastly, it gives us the bits for much desired combi-weapons for the various Wolf Guard loadouts that we all love.  Tastes may differ this tactic, but one GH box and one SM box allows for 20 GH or BC that are not overly wolfy with additional SM decor that can easily be converted to add some Wolves flair.

I have used this method exclusively to build up my army since 5th and has allowed for double special weapons with flamers and meltas that I normally would have had to bits shop along with missile launchers for my Long Fang packs.  Plus, my Wolves have an assortment of armor combos that kinda give them a little bit more of a Imperium/Wolves feel to them then just All Wolves All the Time.

2.  New Box Sets

Looking at the new rumored box sets, GW seems to also be employing the same one for one tactic that I have suggested.  The Long Fang box set and the Wolf Priest with Wolf Guard seem solid, but the Sky Claws could use some work.

The Sky Claw set is supposed to be one Wolves sprue, and jump packs.  However that leaves a bit to be desired such as the running legs of the Assault Marines that add to more dynamic posing of the models.  When it comes to Claws the need for running legs seems to basically be a visual requirement for to envision them charging into whatever they wish to forge a saga.  In this, I personally believe that two or three Assault boxes should be bought and SW decor from your bits box be added.  The Wolves sprue has no harnessed torso to rep the jump pack being strapped on and again no running legs.  Without the Assault boxes, you have static Wolves with just jump packs glued on instead of power packs.

3.  Rumor Purchases

So based upon some of the new rumors regarding the choice of GH needing to make between CCW or bolter AND the requirement that the model be shown as equipped, this number three point actually reinforces the number one point of going one for one with a SM Tactical squad box.  Due to the composition of the SW sprues, the bits are not there to complete your GH packs legally.  There are enough CCW arms to go with one-handed bolter arms, but that is no longer a viable build.  Hence, purchasing the SM Tactical box now gives you alternate bolter arm combinations or "other" use non-bolter arms to flesh out your models.  This of course is unless you want to use bolt pistol arms matched up with bolter arms.  However this then limits your bits for later making Blood Claws or ccw/bolt pistol GH.

Future expansion as more info is released.

3.  ???

Wow thanks this will help me alot, please keep it going.

Honestly at the moment the only safe buy is to just buy more grey hunters and your transport of choice. Everything else is up in the air. We dont know what WG will become in the new book, nor do we know if long fangs will still be as good. Everything else in the current book are kind of secondary to these 3 staple units.

The only characters I would invest in are Rune Priests, as psychic is just so strong this edition.

On efficient army building, unless youre getting cheap heavy weapons from somewhere, I really think the forgeworld weapon packs are a decent buy. Missile launchers are 12 pounds for 5, whereas most bitz sites are charging more.

Actually, I'd hold off on Grey Hunters, or at least assembling them, since so much is unknown about them at this point.

Which is what I have done, even on GH packs that I had already begun building.  I picked up the Sanctus Reach set, but have no plans for assembling that either with the exception of possibly Krom for purposes of just wanting to paint him.

I do however think that the GH/Tactical combo is still a good buy if people want to buy without building because you will still have the basic building blocks for whatever ends up being legal as well as the additional bits needed in terms of missile launchers, melta guns, flamers, and combi weapons.  I think those alone make the one and one buying tactic worth it.  Grav weapons will just be icing on the cake if we are allowed to get them as well.

I'm in agreement with Brother Ramses & Squark. Not building pretty much anything except my Sicarian & 2 Tempests until I see our new codex. Hopefully it's not that far away. As for the Forge World missile launchers, gotta recommend them. Mine came with the arm to mount them but I got mine over a year ago. The only issue I had was you have to cut part of the power pack of so it will glue to the back of the marine.

I've go the Stormclaw box set on it's way to me, so I'm planning on building my units of Grey Hunters with Bolt Guns, Bot Pistols and CCW's, using the knives that come in the kit to represent the CCW's.

That way, I can hedge my bets when it comes to the new codex.

hmm, I'm set to buy two of these rumoured fliers but am also thinking it may make sense to just get one and wait a few weeks to get the other, seeing as they could quite easily feature in an upcoming SW equivalent of Strike Force Alpha (that is, a big scary discount box).

kinda need some drop pods too but given that neither the SW battleforce nor the SM strike force contain other stuff i want...guess I'll be waiting to see what box sets arrive...
