SupremeGrandMaster_Daniel
I had this idea about a chapter master that would be cut by a daemon blade and turn to chaos in secret. Then he would sell the souls of his battle brothers for favor with the dark gods and turn the chapter to the worship of chaos, gaining favor in the process. It's still in the early stages, so I would appreciate any ideas/feedback that you have. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293947-advice-ia-the-dark-covenant/ Share on other sites
Teetengee
Sounds promising. I would see if you can find good cultures that may have similar stories (as foreshadowing) to base the original chapter off of. SupremeGrandMaster_Daniel
Thanks, that is a good suggestion :) What comes to mind immediately is the tale of Dr. Faustus Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293947-advice-ia-the-dark-covenant/#findComment-3749263 Share on other sites
Resarys
You could also look into places where a leader or warlord sold out his people to (likely European) colonists. I'm ignorant of any specific historical incidents, but TNMT 3 comes to mind. A daimyo in Japan sells out to an English trader for guns. Also there are time-traveling turtles. But you get the drift. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/293947-advice-ia-the-dark-covenant/#findComment-3749768 Share on other sites
Harlan Skorus
Along Resarys' line of thought, the Bakumatsu era in Japan could be of interest. Faust is probably a good point if you mainly want to concern yourself with the one guy, but I'm not sure it lends itself so well to creating a whole Chapter. Then again, it does kinda smack of the Rubric, so there's that. Resarys
To distance it from the Rubric, you could have the/a Chaplain/s be immune to it, or, more likely, catch on to what's happening. Unless the Chapter Master is also a Libraian, he's going to be relying on the Chaos Gods to do whatever physically sells the souls of his brothers. Either they give him psyker-ish abilities, or he leads the Chapter in rituals designed to feed them to Chaos. So for example, initially the Chapter Master appears much more pious, and begins leading the Chapter in not-quite Imperial Creed, but much more devout worship. In time perhaps the worship starts to be coloured by the beliefs of the Chapter's homeworld, which in turn opens the door for him to begin modifying the rituals and beginning to sell his brothers' souls to Chaos. At some point, a Chaplain realises something is wrong - maybe not what, exactly, but perhaps after a harrowing moment he realises how far astray the Chapter has gone. (Maybe their Librarians are becoming more powerful/unhinged/have been complaining of nightmares.) The Chaplain tries to lead his brothers against their corrupted Chapter Master, but alas, they are all but shells at this point, too weak to fight. Only his faith has protected him, and he can but watch as his entire Chapter dies to feed the ravenous appetites of the Enemy.
