Returning since 2nd edition

Hi All,

So for the last few years I've been lurking on here and other SW related sites, finally decided to post some pics of my Wolves.

I was in my attic a few years back and notice my box of WH that I literally hadn't set eyes on in 15 years, and decided to take the down for nostalgia's sake. But unexpectedly I really liked looking at the models again, now my painting was awful back then and I never really understood what I was doing... Since then I've stripped back a lot of my 2nd edition stuff, and looked through the numerous websites and Youtube channels to get tips. My old wolves were painted bright blue just like on the 2nd edition box, of course looked nothing like them.

But it's only since looking it more I decided on a more subdued darker look, i.e. pre heresy style/13th company. Using dark greys, bronze and red as my main trio of colours. So I thought I might just put some up and stop procrastinating, please note none of them are finished but almost done. The first few pics are from grey hunters and did as I was starting back into the hobby, the next are some WIP long fangs, and finally some 2nd editions terminators - they're so small compared to the new ones (which I'm also in the process of basecoating). And lastly I gave some converting a go for Logan Grimnar... Please tell me what you think of him?

Thanks,

Wolfface

I have the link here, I uploaded them to B&C so hopefully they just automatically load to this?

Yay, another brother finds his way back to the Aett!!

Welcome aboard :)

Your models look really good, so far and your Logn looks suitably epic, the only thing is the mis-matched axeheads. Otherwise looking good :)

I like how you mmixed newer parts with older models too, the plasma gunner, looks like the older metal model, and the terminators are looking suitably imposing. Not sure how many you have, but you are only allowed 1 special weapon in 5 wolfguard, so you couldn't use the heavy flamer and the assault cannon at the same time.

You are making me want to dig out my old termies and add them to the rout.

Nicely done :)

Welcome back, it's always nice to have a wolf return to the pack.

As for your painting it looks good, your colors are clean, solid and nicely thinned out so they don't wash out the details, your colors contrast nicely with each other, details are picked out, nothing is particularly messy, I don't see any blotches or out of place colors and everything looks well highlighted. I like the inclusion of the classic termies and bits.

The logan looks good, I wouldn't go for the second axe head on the back but if you really want to do that I'd consider adding a wolf head or something from one of the hammers or axes that come with the wolf boxes above the axe head on the back to at least make it as tall as the primary axe head.

As for the metal terminators what dantay said is correct however you can still take 2 heavy weapons if you expand the pack to 10 strong and split off however many are not terminators as pack leaders for other units. As long as the pack is 10 strong in your army list you get to buy two heavy weapons.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the responses and encouragement. Regarding the flamer and assault cannon, they're the only weapons I had for the 2nd edition guys. I might go back and put bolters on them instead, but I've got the 5 new terms too. Just waiting for the Codex to drop before I pick what weapons. It's unbelievable how much more dynamic the new ones are. Good spot on the plasma gunner, he's an old grey hunter, not a bad model considering the age - compared to poor Ragnar... I also have a second edition long fang I've equiped with the modern ML.

I see what you're both getting at with the axe heads, I kind of like the unsymmetrical side to it. Maybe it's just me, also the smaller head is a lot more decorative than the wolf guard axe head so will make it lookly more Wolf Lordy once painted gold/bronze. I'm not 100% on the choice of head for Logan, can you suggest others? I'm thinking of chopping his forked beard off. I would ideally like a roaring face, as I feel this one is a little sedate and contemplative. The forge world SW term leader looks great but how about in the normal space wolf/term boxes?

Thanks again for taking a look

im a firm believer of getting a spray can similar to your base colour, in this case grey.

Spray it grey

Ink it black

dry brush it lighter grey

keep it simple for the bulk of it and you won't go crazy painting a whole army.

Personally I like the head you chose but there are some others that might work, most of the Terminator heads are fairly stoic, probably some of the power armored heads or maybe one of the Thunderwolf Rider heads would work better.

As for the back of the axe again I think it would help to balance it out weight wise with something else on the back like a wolf head taken from some of the other cc weapons in the various kits. With the axe blade merging into the lower jaw of the wolf head like the Thunder Hammer in the Power Armored Space Wolf kit.
