Choosing a Great Company

No Foes Remain

Sorry for continued off post, but to be fair, I think it is a bit of a stretch to say that the Space Wolves and the Grey Knights (or even the greater Inquisition) don't get along.  They had one conflict centuries ago, in the aftermath of the First War for Armaggedon, and as far as I know, that's it.  It would be different if there were multiple, repeated examples of run-ins over the millenia, but I don't think there is any of that in the background material.

If anything, the organization that the Wolves would have much more significant issues with would be the Ecclessiarchy, as they attacked the Wolves and Fenris and held the Fang under siege for three years, if I recall the details correctly.

Now, to get back on post, I'd say that you'd be best served by waiting to see if the new codex explores the background of the Wolf Lords any more than the current one does.  Either way, you just read their entries and go with the one that best suits you.  If none do, then go with a historical figure (like Kjarl Grimblood), or just create your own.

For my part I'm interested in Harald Deathwolf.....the wolflord riding a larger than life cyber-wolf. I like the symbol of the Ravening Jaw and it kinda heralds the end times. I know there isnt much fluff about him other than his first encounter with Canis but that's okay.

Well, given that was Cardinal Bucharis during the Plague of Unbelief, I don't know if that counts as 'the Ecclesiarchy'. When the actual Ecclesiarchy tried in 886.m41 they only lasted three weeks. Make of that what you will tongue.png .

Since he was a cardinal, I always took that as meaning that he was a part of the Ecclessiarchy.  He was an 'Apostate' cardinal, though, so perhaps not, and I've been thinking about this all wrong for many, many, years.  Hmmm.

Is there any examples of two Great Company's working together on the same mission?

I'm planning on having a Wolf Lord on Thunderwolf, as I love the miniature, and have just ordered a box of Thunderwolf Cavalry to go with him. I want to do both the Lord and the Cavalry as Harald Deathwolf and his Wolf Guard.

However, I also want to convert Krom Dragongaze into Ragnar Blackmane. So, do I paint the rank and file Grey Hunters as Harald's company or Ragnar's? I know both Lord's won't be on the field at the same time, but they may be in the same arena of war, and be working together.

Yeah, that guy is a beauty.  Do you know who painted him?

I'm not much up for having multiple Wolf Lords in the same army for multiple reasons, not the least of which is it ends up being fairly expensive, and eats into points that I'd rather spend elsewhere, includnig the "support" characters, like Rune and Wolf Priests.

However, that being said, you could still justify it by thinking about it like this.  The two Great Companies are a part of a larger effort in some grand battle, and these two particular companies are pushing forward on-line (side-by-side), or perhaps have taken up defensive positions side-by-side in mutually supporting way.  Formations like this are most vulnerable at the "seams" where two separate units meet, and enemy reconnaissance has identified this point on the battlefield as being the best place to attack or counterattack the Space Wolves, because there will be more confusion in attacking at the seam/gap.  Now, it doesn't take too much of a stretch to come up with a reason why both Wolf Lords happen to be nearby.  Perhaps Ragnar Blackmane has positioned himself on his Great Company's left flank, to support his main effort, while Harald Deathwolf has positioned himself on his Great Company's right flank, where he has sensed a vulnerability.  Or, perhaps the two commanders have come together to coordinate their next moves, as a normal part of adjacent unit synchronization, and the enemy happens to attack at the time and place of their meeting.  Regardless of your justification, the two commanders are supporting their own formations in the way they think is most appropriate, but just happen to be in the same vicinity when they make contact with enemy forces.
