Wraithwing's Space Wolves WIP - Thunderwolves painted

Greetings folks,

I've recently gotten back into the hobby, as I felt that the Stormclaw box set was too good to miss out on. Also, the miniature for Krom just blew me away, so starting a new Space Wolves army was a no brainer.

As such, I've started this WIP thread, more to motivate me, as well as to gather feedback on what I'm doing.

Now, while I love the miniature for old Fierce-eye, I do not like his fluff or personality, so have thought about converting the mini into a Ragnar counts-as, or an as yet undecided Wolf Lord (Erik Morkai was an old fave).

So, first post in the thread is to test the water with this guy:

Obviously, the sword hand is the wrong way round, and will sort it out once I find a suitably posed hand.

What do you think?

Cheers,

WW

The hand wielding the sword is the left one...

Wraith knows that, he is just testing whether the swords looks ok or not. My opinion, yes but a bit awkwardly long. Maybe shorten it a bit. The Grey Hunter sprue has a nice right handed chainsword with a wolf head as the hilt/motorised bit of the chainsword.

Also, suggest to use a melta bit on the bolt pistol.

Thanks for the positive comments so far folks.

I'll look into using the Grey Hunter sprue for the Chainsword. I wanted one that was longer, and looked like it was a Frost Blade. Maybe I'll slightly extend a Grey Hunter sword. I'm curious, why the suggestion of the melta bit for the Bolt Pistol?

I really like it!

Re: the chainsword, have you thought about one from the Space Marine Vanguard Vet kit?  They have some pretty ornate looking ones and you can get one for 50p from

Thanks for the suggestion, will check it out.

The more rum ours we get about the new Codex, the more I'm inclined to wait until we get some solid info on potentially new models.

I agree with the last statement.

I am not touching any miniatures untill i have read the codex.

That Rags looks menacing indeed!! Nice little conversion!!

I'm not building any models until the new dex hits either. Well, I am not committing to any weapons as of yet. Legs heads and torso's are being prepped for the upcoming wolftime!!

End of Line

Decided to do a test Grey Hunter to get my head around the new paints and the colour scheme I was looking for.

Here's what I have so far:

I'm quite pleased with the way it's turned out, the lighting is a bit off in the photos though.

I wouldn't mind putting a glaze over the armour, but not sure what to use. Do any of you guys have any suggestions?

Cheers,

WW

Personally, I'm going to have mine the kind of colour you have higlighted your mini on the arm.....quite a bit lighter I guess.

Having said that, I do like the darker colours.  Check out my friends WIP (Dantay_XV) over on Dakka.....I love his HH-era termies!

I really like the colour you have going there. As for the sword for Ragnar, I used the chainswords from the grey hunters frame and cut them in half and stuck the ends together to make a longer version. You can see it here.

Hope that's of some use.

You should be able to make a decent glaze out of Russ Grey or Fenrisian Grey (the latter if you want a bit brighter tint over all) by mixing them 1:10 with Lahmian Medium or another matte acrylic medium (not varnish, just medium). Play around with the ratio some to get it to the opaqueness you want it (the more Lahmian Medium/matte acrylic medium, the more you are going to be able to see through the glaze layer).

You could use Guilliman Blue glaze if you really wanted to make it blue, but I think that would tint it "true blue" without much of the grey coming through. You could do the above with something like Administratum Grey if you wanted to have a lighter grey over all tint.

P.S. awesome job on the Wolf so far! :tu:

Almost finished my test miniature. Quite happy with the way he's turned out, so think I'll paint up another four in this scheme. Really don't want to get too far with modelling, with the codex on the horizon:

I've left the right shoulder pad blank, as I'm undecided on which Great Company these guys belong too. It's a toss up between Ragnar Blackmane's, Harald Deathwolf's or Erik Morkai's.

Cheers,

WW
