Death Korps - Where to Start?

So I have decided to start a Death Korps army (3rd army? Why not?). Didn't like IG until I read up on the DKoK. Sort of like I didn't like Space Marines until I read up on Minotaurs.

Anyway, I am starting them off as an allied force to go with my Minotaurs and I'm thinking of doing the siege list to pound the enemy as the Minotaurs close in to mop up. I guess what I'm asking is what kinds of things should I be looking at getting. What's good, etc. I have read up on a few things, but I value the opinions of the folks here. This will not be a tournament list, ever, but I don't want to waste my time getting things that are terribad to begin with.

I have, or am waiting on: 30 infantry, platoon command, HQ command group, commissars. Just not sure where to add on from here. Probably looking to do about 500 points of them initially.

Also, what size are the bases that Forge World uses for the heavy weapons teams? Are they 50 or 60mm? I want to get the Trench Works bases from Secret Weapon for them whenever I do buy some.

Secret weapons bases are awesome!! DKOK is awesome... Welcome to the guard!

DKOK are rock hard... For guard. They are still squishy meat sacks but dang we have the bodies for the grinder.

I'm a fan of grenadiers, heavy mortars and quad launchers myself. Depends on you list makeup for the siege marines they are allying with as to what else might be recommended;)

Btw, we all start with a 500 point list and then another pretty thing appears that looks cool... And then another... Then another... Another.. ;)

I started with a 1500 contingent for my 1500 SW army and wound up with close to 10k combined.

I digress, enjoy the korps and welcome

do you want a full on DKoK force, or just use the models? since in my opinion the normal imperial guard codex is a lot more competitive, while still allowing you to use the same units (if you include IA volume 1,2nd ed). not to mention you can fit in more gruntsmen!

the reason why i say so is because there currently is no better artillery force then one made up from the normal imperial guard list. for only a 180 pts tax (command squad + 2 veteran squads) you can include up to 9 artillery pieces, including the amasing wyvern. i use two of those in all my lists and each time they have earned back their points at least triple! in fact, they are the best artillery we have in mùy opinion, barring tank hunting artillery pieces

My preference is to use the DKoK not vanilla Guard. I like their fluff rules. I thought using the siege list I could deploy them back behind the Aegis, maybe in a corner using bigger guns like the Earthshaker or other weapons, supporting a Minotaurs force with Drop Pods and Land Raider, troops in Rhinos, and air support. And like I said, I'm not worried about being competitive in a tournament sense, only in a friendly game sense.
So far EBay has been a source for troops, and there's other sources that I believe we're not supposed to discuss. :P if Forge World ever gets their molds fixed I'll be happy to give them my money. Heck, I saw a tutorial on how to separate the Gorgon troops to get 50 infantry for less than the cost of a 10 man squad, but FW in response increased the price and made them smaller. Lol.
