40k open day: sisters have been benched

Recommended Posts

two questions were posed to an open panel today of GW reps (phil kelly, matt "the sith lord" ward, and a few others about the future of 40k. two questions of note were asked about the SoB, and its all bad news. GW will not be renewing your models anytime soon. they described them as "wonderful" and "fine as is". sorry ladies no plastic/resin sisters are coming :(. the second was about a codex update or formations or some sort of general rules improvement. they said that they are considering these things but didnt want to make a lot of promises that would get them into another "dark eldar situation".

they also discussed the fact that crusade for armaggeddon is going to be re-released at some point, so that should be good times.

Yet another opportunity for Chapter House Studios to make "Female Space Marines" and steal Games Workshop's copyrights to the Adepta Sororitas, the way they stole the rights to mycetic spores- I mean, "Alien Spore Pod or Comms Relay". If I were an Inquisitor, I'd suspect Games Workshop wants to be bankrupt and out-of-business.

The really disheartening thing was how it was reported that what the sculptors are really interested in working on is a big influence on what gets released. None of them are excited about the uniqueness of the army and the possibilities to do something new and long overdue?

Bah! Phooey!

Being at the Open Day and attending the seminars, the tone I got about the Sisters was very, very different. Mind you, the exact answers/questions might have differed slightly between the morning seminars and the afternoon ones (which I attended) - though the report on Faet does sound like the contributor was in the same seminar that I was.

I am not sure you can take their non-committal answers as particularly gospel - The studio were being intentionally vague on any subject about upcoming releases/future plans for armies, in fact it was the one thing we were told they could not, and would not, answer (though the audience tried through cunningly-worded questions). The point about the "Dark Eldar situation" was that the team responsible had essentially solely worked on that project for 5 straight years and ended up being very burnt-out by the experience. Jes was also explaining that the new technology of the last few years (and the shift in release schedules/philosophy) could lead to things like the Sisters...but again with not being able to comment, hence the answer may have appeared to be "negative" about the situation.

I'm going to quote myself from another thread, as my impression was certainly not as negative as that presented by the OP:

I was at the Open Day yesterday, and the subject of Sisters of Battle came up in one of the seminars I was attending, and in discussions with the design team. Phil Kelly was discussing how the new release schedule and the concept of supplements frees up a lot of design studio time to work on projects they are really enthused about. Sisters were used as an example of a potential Supplement-style book candidate, but that was in the context of they type of book they can release relative to volume of models (for example, the new Tempestus models and their supplement - I speculate that if the Sisters got a basic Squad and Seraphim, we would see pretty much the same army list we have now, but listed as a "supplement" instead of a "Codex"). Most models/releases are driven by what the sculptors are most enthusiastic about making, so if there is a massive buzz about the Sisters in the Studio and tons of ideas for cool units that get signed off then it would be a full Codex rather than a supplement.

More pertinent to the discussion in this thread about models, the Sisters are definitely not going to be dropped - they could not comment on when anything specific (for any faction) might be released, but Sisters are not going anywhere...Jes Goodwin said that as long as he works for GW, the Sisters will be around.

Whilst discussing the new release schedule, it was mentioned that the full-on Dark Eldar reboot, whilst a favourite project of Phil and Jes, took them around 5 years to do and they really wanted to work on other projects during this time as they were getting burnt out working on the same project. As such, I am not surprised that the "plastic sisters rumour" has been one for ages, as it is quite possible that they have indeed been being worked on on-and-off for many years.

Therefore, whilst the studio are being very tight-lipped about the future in general, I think there is hope for the Sisters - they certainly aren't going to be killed off and there will be a release at some point.

The Sisters are some of Jes' favourite ever models, and he is head of the design studio, just food for thought ;).

You don't understand the lawsuit if you're making that comparison. Models exist for Sisters and thus GW owns the rights to them, Chapterhouse cannot touch them legally. The Mycetic Spore did not have a model, hence why Chapterhouse went ahead and made one.

I find it funny when people blame Chapterhouse studios for the loss of these units in the codices.  The logic is backwards!

Clearly GW have no pressing concern nor semblance of interest in renewing the Sisters line at the present time.  This leaves us in exactly the same position as always, with the Sister's range a far off dream (lest something change at HQ).  Gotta say I'm glad I have my Sisters models already.  They're only going to get rarer and more valuable for the forseeable future!

As hobbyists all we can do is keep showing off our Sisters of battle!

I dont think GW are ever drawn on anything these days, secret, secret, secret is the way, if there are to be new sisters, we'll find out a few weeks before the launch, but tbh, my joy comes in painting them and owning such fine figures, I can see me being disappointed in new sculpts

Could I see a link to this, I find different things then girls with guns when I search for it.

It was on their blog a while back as concept art, I think. They have a few models that have fantasy and sci-fantasy version. This would be the sci-styling of the pseudo sisters of sigmar from about that era.

That said, I think if this project ever happens it may be the death-knell, or the defibrillator, for the Sisters range. Either Gee-Dub will race them to market to undercut their development cost, or deprecate the range to cut off the leech source for their competition. They done a fair number of little anti-competitive things lately, mostly to do with naming and branding. Naming the paints with Proper monikers and re-naming Astra Militarum come to mind as examples.

For how long? Is Games Workshop keeping Adepta Sororitas models in production (even low-rate production, which may not meet consumer demand), or have they stopped/plan to stop, and are relying on/will rely on stockpiles of models produced a decade ago?

While I certainly don't like the re-branding of Imperial Guard, calling it 'anti-competitive' is a bit unfair. Its only anticompetitive as far as it gives them a better legal basis to defend their copyrights (assuming I've understood the situation correctly), making it harder for other companies to make money blatantly ripping off GW's IP.

If you want to give GW grief, a better shout would be things like the finecast debacle, and the consumer contempt that went with it, or their shafting of independent retailers, or hell, even the length of time they've left the Sisters to languish. In those cases I'll happily join in, just give them grief for the right reasons. msn-wink.gif
