How to ensure survival of army that is majority in reserve

If you have an army that's majority in Reserve (right now I'm planning for 1700 out of 2000 points of MT Scions as Airborne Assault in Reserve), what are some options to ensure survival until your Reserves get on the table?

 

I'm assuming some sort of Fortification with Comms Relay for starters but which one? Bunkers can get blown up by Drop-Pod Melta, while Skyshield is more expensive and doesn't completely stop opponents from directly shooting your units.

 

Additionally, what else can / should be done? Station a large cheap Blob unit? Place some sort of Bike / Skimmer Unit with Jink in cover?

Null deployment. Place your remaining units split between opposite corners of the board, in cover, and out of Line of Sight. You might lose one corner, but the other will have enough units left to save you to Turn 2.

If you Null Deploy, won't you lose if none of your Reserves are Drop-Pods and you have nothing on the board at the end of the First Turn?

Very few players can kill all units on two sides of a table on turn 1 if those units are in cover and out of Line of Sight. Rest assured, you won't be tabled turn 1. A single model in a Bastian on one side of the table, and two units hidden on the other side will effectively live through your opponent's every effort to root them out and kill them, especially if those two units are combat squads inside a shared Dedicated Transport. By deploying so far away from your opponent and split between opposite sides, your opponent has to choose between going all in on one side (ignoring the other), splitting their forces (being too weak to effect either side), or ignoring both sides (a freeby turn or two).

 

If your opponent commits to one side over the other, your reserves will catch them out of place. If your opponent splits forces, your reserves can focus one side down and then the other. If your opponent turtles, your reserves gain a turn or two of no shooting damaging an bypass the distance on the table they would have had to move through if not reserved. If your opponent also Null Deployed, you can focus down each enemy unit as it becomes available while pushing objectives.

 

Have a plan. Have a back-up plan. Have a "if everything falls apart, this is what I'm going to do" plan. Plan for having to play turns 6 and 7. Plan for winning on turn 5. If you absolutely cannot win, have a plan to deny a win from your opponent (seems like a Dick move, but it opens up room to capitalize on any mistakes your opponent might make). Always strive to make less mistakes than your opponent. And play to the mission.
