Legion Army Books

I've been thinking about getting one of the army books, the Betrayal book for Death Guard, but then the other book got me confused: the Legion Astartes Crusade Army List. Can I purchase the Army List book without the Betrayal book and still make a 30k Death Guard army? What's the difference between the Army List book and the other 3 books?

The army list contains all of the basic units from the 3 books, and you can sort of play death guard with them since it does allow you to substitute rules from the death guard rules, you just won't have any death guard special characters/units/items/rules.

 

Another difference is the crusade list is the most up to date version of the rules, if you want to use 30K armies you're going to have to use either that book, or betrayal and some outdated FAQ's.

 

I recommend getting Legion Astartes Gaming collection, The Crusade List has all of the base units and the armoury, the Campaign Legions contain all of the Legion Specific stuff from all three books, and together they're cheaper than buying Betrayal on its own (not to mention FAR easier to use).  The two of them were released after the 3 Isstvan books and they're the condensed and updated versions of all 3.

In the Legion Astartes book, Death Guard gets you 6 legion specific units:

 

4 HQ: Mortung, Rask, Typhon, Deathshroud Terminator Squad

1 HS: Grave Warden Terminator Squad

1 LW: Mortarion

 

All of the Legions get 5 - 7 specific units.

 

The Crusade List book is a better value. Unless you want fluff, then nothing beats the HH 1-3 volumes.

2 EL: Deathshroud Terminator Squad, Grave Warden Terminator Squad

EDIT:  You're right after all, they are normally Elite Choices but can also be taken as a command squad, my bad on that.

 

Here's another idea, if you only want to get one book (and you should really get the two cheaper ones because they're less than betrayal and easier to use) then get the campaign legions book, and use it as a supplement to your regular space marine army (if you have one), use it like Clan Raukaan or Sentinels of Terra, where you get the new Legion rules to replace your chapter tactics, and you get the new HQ's, Heavy Support, and LoW for your special characters, that way you won't hurt your wallet as much (you'll only need Deathshroud, Grave Wardens and Mortarion, the others don't have models yet so you can use regular characters to represent them), you'll get to learn how to use the different units effectively, as well as learn the strength and weaknesses of the army, since the Campaign book contains all of the army-specific stuff.

I only have Chaos Marines. I understand how Chapter Tactics work (and I'm guessing the Legion rules work in a similar way), but would it require me to have a Space Marine army? I know I couldn't use my Daemon engines, but other than that, could the Campaign book still work?

Legion Rules are more powerful than Chapter Tactics, but they've also got downsides, even more so if you use their specific Rite of War.

I think you can use them with those, it'll be like you're playing 3rd edition Chaos Space Marines, back when they all had their own legion rules, just use it like the Black Legion supplement, don't take any marks on your regular troops, no cultists, no obliterators, no daemon things in general (to make it fluffy) and you should be good (the Death Guard's special units, characters, and equipment should more than cover for them).

Yeah, I was corrected on this in another forum right before I had to go to work, my mistake on this, I had missed that little bit there and was only looking at the Force Organization symbol which listed them as a HQ choice.
