Polythemus
Hey guys, I played a game today vs Eldar today. I was so sure that I would lose i took no pics! The eldar players list was like so. Farseer on jetbike with mantle of laughing. waveserp x5 dire avengers waveserp x5 dire avengers waveserp x5 dire avengers waveserp x5 dire avengers waveserp x5 wraithguard wraithknight with heavy distortion cannon wraithknight with heavy distortion cannon I knew that it would be pretty tough and although I didn't know his exact list going in, i had seen him post a similar list on the forum of our club. Expecting something like the list above I resolved to come up with a list to counter it. Azreal Libby ML2 DWK x5 Troops, DWT x5 cml, th/ssx1 Tacticals - x7 combimelta, meltagun Rhino Tacticals - x7 combimelta, meltagun Rhino RAS x3 meltagunsx2, MMAB, sgt meltabombs RAS x3 meltagunsx2, MMAB Predator all las LRC w/ multimelta http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RHY07IHxMso/U9WVarHb0GI/AAAAAAAAB5M/KbA6L-Va0is/s1600/deploy.gif I got to go first. It was a maelstrom mission. I took the reserve munipulation warlord trait. Azzy was placed with one tact squad and libby with the other. DWK were in LRC. I rolled psychic powers on telepathy and got invis, and shrouding. DA1 - Some shuffling with movement and a mistake is made as i cast invis from inside the rhino. this wasn't a huge issue as i could have just gotten out and cast it. No real damage. 1 objective claimed. Total 1vp http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-LA7y88IXoGw/U9WVclNqTaI/AAAAAAAAB5U/11cd_8Lq2Ik/s1600/eldar+1.gif E1 - Serpent shields go to work. Wraithknights advance (not sure why as they are armed for shooting, maybe he wanted to pound my LRC) and Azzy's rhino is destroyed. 2 HP placed on predator from Hvy distotion (both wraithknights). one objective acheived. 2vp http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OhEU9GcG0jA/U9WVe8Zb98I/AAAAAAAAB5c/WYCexD2FeLo/s1600/da2a.gif http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IovgEGqJCGg/U9WVi6D3ySI/AAAAAAAAB5o/dSeGy1HrX_k/s1600/da2b.gif DA2 - LRC advances, DWT deep strike into his backfield and bikers all come on (thanks to Azzy reserve manipulaion). Libby again gets off invis on the DWK. Shooting from outflankers and DWT kills off 2 waveserpents and forces 2 more to jink. in combat the invisible DWK kill off 1 wraithknight (big game hunter achieved for 2vp). 1 one obj claimed. Total 4vp http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WF6RmsUUgog/U9WVpaEZWwI/AAAAAAAAB6A/G1AxAHUOO08/s1600/eldar2.gif E2 - disembarked wraith guard use ap2 flamers to toast all my bikers but one on the opposite side of the board. other serpents try to shoot as well, but jink hampers their fire. Wratih knight gets into combat with the LRC and imbolizes it twice placing 3 HP on it. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--89Jmcw3XCk/U9WVpfnKtoI/AAAAAAAAB58/ZuGrspFxP0E/s1600/da3a.gif http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ixk4gMGOC6A/U9WVpWrKU9I/AAAAAAAAB6E/JGXObr15WrM/s1600/da3b.gif DA3 - LIbby tries to invis the DWK again but fails. The libby rhino moves forward and squad inside tries to hit a functional waveserp, but it jinks everything attack bike also fails to get through the holofields. the DWkinghts charge the second WK, Azzy charges the Warlord who is at midfield, DWT in the backfield can try to charge two dire avenger squads who are holding back field objectives. Knowing that the wraith guard pose a threat to Azzy and Co. the DWT try for a multicharge dire aveng. and wraithguard. This turns out to be a bad idea as only the sergent survives out of 4DWT and by all rights there were several invul saves that had to be made for that to occur. Incombat the WKnight takes out one DWT and takes a wound, but from here on out its gonna be tough as its the knight master that goes down. meaning every one is now AP4. In combat azzy puts two wounds on the farseer. In combat the DWT kills one Dire avenger. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IVhtar63w58/U9WViyL5zUI/AAAAAAAAB5s/yKrQNRuA5xA/s1600/eldar3.gif E3 - With a lot of stuff in combat the Eldar dont have much to shoot at, and dire avengers get out of Wave serp and kill the last remaining attack bike. the other two wave serpents can't hurt or cant see the predator. The farsser guides the wriathknight after I am able to Deny prescience. In combat the WK slays two more DWK. the DWT kills off the Dire avengers, and the farseer makes his saves but can't even hurt azreal. http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MbuAGCfIzjY/U9WVuLXv56I/AAAAAAAAB6Q/5luUcuhkGNA/s1600/da4.gif DA4 - The librarian squad tries to surround the waveserpent and the libby plans to charge the Dire avengers. meanwhile he casts psy shriek on the wraith knight and rolls a 13 bringing it down to 1 wound. the shooting from the librarians tactical squad brings blows up the waveserpent with a single pen. The predator then proceeds to 1 shot a wave serpent that shot at him last turn, LRC fires on the wriathguard. in combat the WK splatters another DWK, Azreal kills off the farseer (kill warlord, and slay the witch), and the DWT sargent charges the dire avengers that haven't been moved. The libby fails his charge. 2VPs Total 6VP http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xrhOwPXhr70/U9WVuNF0EOI/AAAAAAAAB6U/G_AhrT0RCws/s1600/eldar4.gif E4 - The lone surviving Waveserpent, tries move up to contest an objective, and the wraithguard move close to flame azreal and the recently freed up tactical squad. the dire avengers that had shot up an attack bike move further back. the wraithguard flamers cant get through the invul saves, and lone waveserp can only kill one marine. Wraithknight kills lone remaining DWK and moves into ruins. Not sure why my opponent never put the squad of dire avenger inside the exploded waveserp on the table. http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-x-ikrc8kjNk/U9WVxm4AdRI/AAAAAAAAB6c/0fH7yBFVZxk/s1600/da5.gif DA5 - The librarian casts invisibility on the tactical squad and prepares to charge the dire avengers. Azreal and his squad prepare to charge the wraithguard. The LRC fires on the Wraithguard killing one, and forces the waveserpent to jink. The predator fires on the WK who cant make its cover save and loses its last wound. Azreal and Co. charge into combat with the wraithguard. Librarian and tactical squad fail their charge. E5 - The slightly defleated eldar player decides to conceded defeat. Final score 7 - 2 Dark Angel's Summary: well i wish i had taken some pics, cause that was amazing. Albeit my opponent was still learning the rules to 7th, but hey when you come with fire power like that, no mercy. I forgot to tell him that you could discard, which was an honest mistake, but I dont feel too bad as he did have a copy of the rule book himself. Apparently he had two four point objective cards that he couldn't claim since azreal and the tacticals were in combat right on top of it. Im sure that may have made the game closer but I was controlling alot of turf by that time. Multicharging the wraithguard was not smart, and that is something that I will have to think about for next time. Then again since my attacking power was reduced by so much I was able to stay locked in combat and not get fried by wave serpents or AP 2 flamers. I was quite lucky not to lose vehicles to the WKnight shooting as those things are nasty. This was my first time playing against eldar and i was pretty happy with my performance. I knew i would need some luck versus those two wraith knights and I got it with the knights killing one with smite. After that i knew that they were on a suicide mission to just hold up the other big fella. Otherwise by having multiple small squads threatening and making those waveserpents jink I was able to do pretty well. bringing multiple melta guns made the list a bit more threatening while azreal made the tacticals very durable. Man I wish azreal had an assault weapon. Overall a great result against a powerlist that I really had no buisness beating, but i think good strategy and a little list tailoring and I was able to make a game of it. Prot
Great use of Azrael. I'm all over the objective fnp one, but it served you well! When the Knightmaster died first, was it because he was the only one in CC with the Wraithknight? Polythemus
no it was just that the wraithknight struck first and the wound was assigned randomly. The knight master was just unlucky. Honestly I should have used a look out sir roll, and I just forgot. I wrote a quick article on that on my blog and everything. Talking about how look out sirs actually providea survival benefit for the squad, pretty silly of me to forget it. I was very impressed with azreal and how the rest of the list was able to perform. I would have prefered to borrow a drop pod and use him in that but it worked out pretty well. I think if he isn't able to force combat he wouldn't be as useful but, he did a very good job in this one. I will also say that my opponents tactics were a little strange. Why come towards me with the wraithknights, why get the warlord close enough to assault. It doesn't really jive with what the list should be doing to be played optimally. The guy was saying that he used to play Nurgle:CSM in the past but not recently. It seems like that style of list is more about coming straight at the opponent, which is more what he did here. Chaplain Lucifer
Good show and a nice win. As soon as I saw 2 WK and so many WS I was fearing for a crushing defeat but you managed quite well! Gillyfish
Wow, nice victory and battle report! Looks like a very tough list to beat, but you did a good job. I agree that his use of some of his units was a bit strange - perhaps your centre worried him enough that he felt he had to advance to obtain board control? Out of interest, if you'd played again, would you have adopted the same tactics? You already said that you wouldn't have multi-charged the squads on your right flank, but would you have also brought on the Ravenwing squads there or somewhere else to minimise return fire? Polythemus
Good show and a nice win. As soon as I saw 2 WK and so many WS I was fearing for a crushing defeat but you managed quite well! Yeah thats why no pics were taken cause I was afraid of the same thing. By utilizing the offensive capability of the serp shields he lost out on the defensive bonus they provided. That killed him when my outflankers arrived. If we played again and he brought the same list I would absolutely use the same tactics. The outflanking bikes were a necessary evil, even though it was a suicide mission, because it kept the eldar from shooting me up on the next turn. The new jink mechanic helps to really mitigate their fire power, but make no mistake jinking waveserpents are still quite potent. I could have minimized the amount of flamer coverage the bikes recieved by spreading out more, and getting at max range for all the bikes, but the tactic itself was sound and kept the waveserpents on their heels to buy me some time. I dont know if I would have just kept the terminators charging the single dire avengers squad or declare a multicharge with both squads even though it might have failed, since there would be a greater likely hood to stay in combat with the Dire avengers, which would be the real goal. invisibility on the terminators. The first turn i cast invis on the libby's rhino, but by the rules you can now only use witchfires from inside a transport so, i would have move it out of LOS if possible. the second turn I would have gotten out because casting invis on the DWK was very important as it made them extremely difficult to deal with for that first wraithknight which took a beat down. this also had the added benefit of causing the DWK to be ignored for the following eldar shooting phase. Which is great since I needed the DWK alive to deal with the second WraithKnight. Overall I got good cards and had some OK tactics so the result worked out pretty well. The deployment also worked in my favor, since his waveserpents were hugging one side of the board. All in all, a pretty awesome outcome.
