some imperial fist test minis

just going through some minis, locking down how i want each unit to be painted for the legion before going wholesale into the entire army.

here's some of the models i've done up:

first up, is the squad of cataphractii suits.  i commandeered a DW plasma cannon to use as a plasma blaster since it looked more bulky and suitable for this style of suit:

its not a final shot of the squad, but gives you an idea of the scheme i went with for their suits.

next, is a test mini for the tartaros suits:

i wasnt really feeling the metal aquila, so its been painted black again and i'll drybrush it metal like the rest of the black armour's been done.  i'm thinking of adding more yellow to the chest for the sergeant; this guys just a basic from the squad.

right now, i'm working on this lil guy:

this is with just the basecoat of yellow.

and here's the start of the shading on the right leg:

his armor's been done with a coat of averland sunset over black primer, and the shading is being applied with a detail brush, using reikland fleshshade.  its a warmer tone than agrax earthshade, but not as light and subtle as seraphim sepia.

once his armor is all done, im thinking of doing a little bit of overbrushing with metal to add wear to the plating.  overall, i think these breacher models are very nice sculpts, and i may just going the extra mile and freehand some unit markings and honor badges across the 2 squads i plan to make.  the goal is to have 30 of these by the time im done.

so what do you guys think so far?

I like what you have going on here and I look forward to seeing the yellow shade on all these fellas, may I suggest that for your black you try a dark gray then apply a heavy black wash, you still get the black color buy it naturally highlights itself, as I learned with this method though you need to keep an eye on the wash so it doesn't pool and run into of the armor sections.

Looking good so far. The Cataphractii look really good. Any chance of a close up of one of them? Now THAT is a plasma blastgun!

sort of; this time i bought some reikland fleshshade and used a detail brush to put it in all the lined areas.  and then i took a sponge that i tore random pieces off so it was coarse and uneven, and "scraped" the metal detailing onto the armour instead of using a drybrush.
