Warriors of Ash and Shadow - Legio XIX Nomad-Preditation

Hi Guys

Inspired by BCK's Crimson Sons, I want to try and put together some Raven Guard of the Nomad-Preditation fleet. The idea would be to use older armour marks such as II and III, with IV and maybe some VI left to recon elements. While I would use the Raven Guard rules I would try and include unconventional elements such as armour and TDA.

For painting I think I will go for a very dark grey through to black, with off white for markings. I would like to include ash war paint as they will mostly be Terran marines. For background purposes I will try and explore the Terran heritage, with the Mor Deythan becoming Shade Walkers (thanks to 1000Heathens for the idea in previous thread of mine), and the Deliverers being an important unit.

I am hoping to get the first model built tonight, a Dark Furry, possibly the Chooser of the Slain, but I wanted to ask a question. As the Nomad-Predatory fleets were not sent away till after Corax re joined the legion, I would imagine that the Terrans would have started to take on Deliverance/Kiavahr customs. So I will show them with the Raven symbol on their shoulder, but should I also include the raven skulls, and other motifs associated with the Raven Guard, or just keep them plain with the odd imperial motif?

You could legitimately do either I think. Question is: what sounds cooler to you? And which do you want to paint and model for your force?

I tend to work backwards in that I want something to look awesome and then give it fluff to match. This might be a situation where you can do the same.

Oh, and post pics! Should turn out great!

I think I will use both sparingly, I always imagined the Raven Guard as a spartan legion, both before and after being united with Corax. I have plenty of Iron Hands bits which I plan to use as they look quite practical, and I wouldn't mind grabbing some Death Guard torsos.

Any way, here is the test model, and first member of a Dark Fury Headhunter squad. I added a raven skull...

Decided to try and work out my black scheme, so I threw together a quick test model. Here is what I have so far, not sure how I should highlight.

While I mull that over, I decided to build something. I like the way that the Raven Guard were the forerunners behind the Moritat's. Here is my take:

I wanted a rough, hunter look, so I went with the destroyer body, and a mixture of armour. The power pack has just been placed there to see how he looks, I can't decoded if I should give him a cameoline cloak to finish the hunter effect.

I went with one Plasma, one Volkite. It's nice to vary stuff up. I think I would eventually like to join him with a small group of Destroyers to hunt with.

The original XIX Legion, while similar in style to Corax Raven Guard, were a lot more brutal and indiscriminate with collateral damage. This, coupled with their closeness to the Warmaster who they served with a lot before Corax was found, meant a lot of the Terrans were no trusted by Corax. So he sent away, beyond the edges of the galaxy, with sealed orders, under the guise of nomad predatory fleets, or with Rogue Traders, and didnt even recall them after Isstvan V. A lot of people see this as a hint to the birth of the Space Sharks.

I see it as a chance to model the Raven Guard from a different angle. I like the cast out sons aspect, nit trusted by their father or legion, banished to the darkness. Sort of like the Night. But unlike the Night Lords my guys have returned to the galaxy, uncalled for, shattered but not broken, to fight for the Emperor, and hunt the traitors and grind them to dust.

Ah okay thank you. I knew about the PH RG being brutal and such, but didn't realise he actually sent them away like that. Cool that that's a hint to the Carcharodons, I was thinking of having some nods to the Space Sharks in my RG, and going for a darker element, this might be something to look into. I did still want to be Corax loyal though.
I must add, Corax didn't send all the Terrans away, I just think it was the ones he felt he couldn't trust. My guys were probably a little grey in Corax mind, so he posted them to war zones on the edge of the galaxy.
Yeah good point, I imagine it would change people. Even in Scars, the White Scar librarian Yusegai or whatever starts to get darker and more ruthless, just from learning about the treachery, let alone being at the massacre.
