Son of Carnelian
Okay, so I have a hang-up that I need resolved. I have never seen Chaos trim done well in non-metallic colors. It just strikes me that with all those rivets and all the existing color schemes that make the shoulder trim metal, any matte color comes off as looking like a 90s action figure. But now I have come up with a cool color scheme for a warband that uses black trim. What I am wondering if anyone has any examples of their own work or links to models with matte trim so that I can see that this works. Thanks in advance. Bryan Blaire
This may not help you any, because the trim is brighter than the black you are planning, but I think the trim on the Chosen from the DV box works well in the bone color on the Extinction Angel I did up last year: Extinction Angel Chosen YMMV I'm also trying to figure out what 90s action figures you are talking about! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294415-chaos-trim-conundrum/#findComment-3760045 Share on other sites

Oh my sweet goodness, those look perfect. Like bone extensions or ivory. I'm totally enamoured. And I don't know which 90s figures I am talking about. i just have memories of companies cheaping out on their figures by making their gold sections matte yellow or stuff like that. I totally know what you mean about action figures. GI Joe and all those would always have sculpted details that weren't painted. You'd have an ammo belt that was all olive drab or something. I never really thought about it with trim, but I get it now that you mention it. Just thought I'd let you know you're not crazy. Bryan Blaire
Ah, okay, now I know what you mean! One thing you could do with the black trims to make it more interesting and seem less "cop-out"-ish (if that's actually what the concern is) would be to spice them up with some battle damage beyond the built-in gouges/cut-ins on the edges. Maybe start with a dark grey (Mechanicum Standard Grey + one or two parts Abaddon Black) and then give it some Nuln Oil shadows to get some natural shadows going. Do some chips with Boltgun/Leadbelcher and add some Nuln Oil to that to deepen them some as well. I think you'll do fine with matte black trim on the Chaos figures (now if only we can get some upgraded basic CSM models). And :thanks: for the compliments, Marshal Sampson! Now I just need to get some more of that army done (especially since they are my story's antagonists). Subtle Discord
This topic intrigues me. Metallics really do suit trim in many cases, but it's no hard rule by any stretch. I've seen some great colours done effectively, but painting Black Legion, I don't have the opportunity to experiment. I've got enough to do without adding more to my distractions. I'll tell you what Marshal, when you get around to this project, if you're going to add a Rhino to the force send me a PM and I'll donate a trim kit to the cause so you can experiment on a larger scale. The only catch, you gotta show some pictures once it's painted. Sound like an idea? I will let you know when this project begins but it will probably happen closer towards the end of the year. Thank you in advance though!
