Painting fur

the best tip I can give is to try and blend a few shades on the base coat (e.g. Brown in the middle, sandy colour towards the edges of the pelt) and then also drybrush a lighter shade over that (often a very light grey can look good such as ulthuan grey because wolves tend to have a broad mix of browns and greys in their coat).

also, when drybrushing in general, make sure there is almost no paint in the brush. When you wipe it on your hands you should see very little paint.

also, abduct an Abyssinian cat and inspect it's fur up close. See how variegated it is? Wolves are typically like that.

also, buy painted. On YouTube has a good technique for thunder wolves

Ill post the technique I used tomorrow. Ive painted a variety of wolf pelts. As you can see from my avatar, my dog, an alaskan malamute, the northern wolf breeds tend to be far more wolf grey in colour than the browns which were mostly in central americas and europe. The coat is quite incredible as they are in essence white...with a grey to black mask. Their undercoat is white, and layers up to greys and blacks on the tip. In other words, completely opposite to how we would normally paint. In there lies the trick and the challenge.
