how do you use wolf guard in the current edition?

Wait until the new codex. They may improve, people may crucify every single model, they may be come auto includes or all of the above. The only thing we know is that there won't be any pack leaders anymore, but rather you can pay a small extra to upgrade a GH to become a sarge. At least that is what I take away from that leak anyway.

In these waning days of our current book I've exclusively used them in 5 man TDA squads in Pods with a heavy weapon and mix of power weapons. They're a solid unit for dropping on rear objectives and holding it, or for wiping out small backfield units (Lootas, Heavy Weapons Teams, Broadsides, etc). If nothing else I find they draw a lot of fire and attention away from  your more important squads of Grey Hunters, and your other supporting units. I've found using them as Pack Leaders to be a waste of points, as if  you're transporting the unit they're accompanying (99% of the time Grey Hunters in Pods or Rhinos) you can't take that 2nd special weapon, and to me a combi-weapon on that Pack Leader is not an equivalent or acceptable alternative, as you're paying minimum 23 points for a single special shot and 1 extra CC attack (and an opportunity to get challenged and give up a Victory Point in a few Maelstrom Missions) when you could spend 15 points and get that 2nd full-special weapon for free. Also, you have to take at least 3 guys still if you're using them to split into Pack Leaders, so you're making that mistake several times.

I'm interested to see what becomes of them in the new book.

Have to disagree, I've never really bothered with GH packs without the WGPLs. When I have the Ld8 as really been a major drawback. The loss of the 2nd special has been annoying, but well worth it for the increased Ld and close combat potential the WG offers.

When I used to play, I used to take a unit of 4-9 depending on whether i wanted a 5 man TDA unit or not. I used to have a TDA long fang leader with missile launchers. 3 of them were used as GH leaders with power somethings and combi weapons. The rest of them were usually deployed as 5 terminators or 4 if the lord was riding with them. To be honest I never used them as throw away sternguard. Of course my last game was over 2 years ago so things have changed a lot.

For the past edition units in drop pods with combi-weapons have been solid, but mainly because we kept 5th edition's discount (with them almost definitely losing that, Wolf Guard suicide pods will resume being... mediocre due to not being sternguard and costing almost as much). Wolf Guard terminators can do decent impressions of Codex Honor Guard's metabusting power maul spam, although bulky hurts since it makes getting a ton of them in one place hard.

TDA pack leaders may or may not still be a thing- They should be decent for packs in drop pods, stormwolves, and on foot if they are, barring a price jump somewhere.

An MSU pack of wolf guard is 54 points, true, but 3 models can't really do much of anything. Also, Loganwing may or may not still be a thing. :(

they can if you are playing maelstrom and you need mobile OS units

and we are talking about current codex as we dont know if logan will make WG troops in the new edition

Almost always used them as WGPL's spread throughout my army. Their cheap wargear & Ld boost made them well worth it. Not to mention the ability to take challenges in packs with ICs. And the flavour of having some unusual models on the table. Fielded bare bones WGPLs, cheap PW's & PPs, double PF's(the local tread head here despises that guy) to SS & PW guys. Mixed in with TDA where appropriate of course.
