New Codex, New Stuff, what are your thoughts?

So the codex is now less than a week away and lots of rumors and details have been compiled and rules already released in White Dwarf. One thing I'm noticing is that we are looking to have a lot more weapons, wargear and units added than were added with our last codex update. So far we have:

Stormrider - Chariot for Logan Grimnar

Stormfang Gunship

Stormwolf Transport

Murderfang - New special character

Murderclaws - Giant Frost Claws

Skyhammer Missiles - Option for the gunships

Stormstrike Missiles - Option for the gunships

Twin-Linked Helfrost Cannons - Gunship mounted guns

Helfrost Cannon - Dreadnought mounted gun

Helfrost Destructor - Gunship primary weapon

Great Wolf Claws - Dreadnought mounted Wolf Claws

Fenrisian Great Axe - Venerable Dreadnought Frost Axe type thing

Blizzard Shield - Venerable Dreadnought Storm Shield

Trueclaw - Now the named relic claw of Bjorn

And then the standard array of new Relics:

The Helm of Durfast - re-roll to hit and ignore cover

The Armor of Russ - 2+/4++ and -5 to the initiative of opponents in challenges

The Bite of Fenris - Bolter with Helfrost rounds

The Black Death - Relic Frost Axe it looks like, +2 strength, ap 2, melee, unwieldy and +3 attacks when outnumbered in combat.

The Wulfen Stone - Furious Charge and Berserk

So what do you guys think? How will your lists change with this stuff? Are there any of these options your really excited about or dislike? How useful do you think they will be?

To start off I think some of these things will be more useful than others. The relics are a standard slew, a suit of armor, a couple weapons, a couple auxiliary items/wargear. I was hoping for an AP 2 Frost Sword rather than an axe but it looks like we'll still have to strike at I1 to get that AP2, oh well. As for the other relics I'm not so sure how useful they will be, I can see the Bite of Fenris seeing some use on secondary characters and the Helm of Durfast may well be a must take on killy Wolf Lords. The Armor of Russ may be good or it may just be too expensive and I don't see the Wulfen Stone being too terribly useful in most cases.

As for the units and other wargear I have to say the Helfrost weapons are growing on me, as are the aircraft. I think I'll probably use the Stormwolf a lot more than the Stormfang, the Stormfang's much smaller transport capacity and lack of assault transport make me feel like it's a jack of all trades, master of none. The Stormfang is also a Heavy Support while the Stormwolf is Fast Attack and I don't know about you guys but I've got more available Fast Attack slots than Heavy Support. The two missile options also don't strike me as great, I'll probably stick with multi-meltas and lascannons, a better match for the strength and ap of the helfrost weapons.

I also am starting to really like Murderclaw's rules, though I'll absolutely change the head and just give him the wolf skull helmet, he really seems like a nice and surprisingly cost effective support unit, both a distraction and a hidden slayer in a list. If the enemy throws enough firepower at him to remove him quickly it will leave other units free to operate without harassment and ultimately a relatively small loss of points while if the opponent doesn't remove him he can easily prove extremely dangerous once he gets into close combat. I like it. However while Murderclaw may be a solid option I'm not sold yet on the dual Great Wolf Claw or Great Axe and Blizzard Shield armed Venerable Dreadnoughts. Without the extra attacks or It Will Not Die of Murderclaw I'm not sure purely melee Ven Dreads are going to be that viable.

Lastly... Stormrider... frankly I just don't know. I really like the idea and had actually considered making a chariot for my Wolf Lord ages ago but never got around to it. Now there it is and while I think the idea is cool I'm not so sure of the actual model itself, it just looks a bit... goofy, over the top. Maybe it will help to see it first hand but I dunno.

Ultimately I think both a Stormfang and Stormwolf will be added to my list, along with Murderclaw and a new Bjorn or Ven Dread armed with a Helfrost cannon but otherwise I expect my list, army composition and tactics won't change a whole lot.

So what are you guys thoughts and feelings on all these new gubbinz?

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE the new dreads. They are exactly what I wanted them to be all this time. Those reliefs on the sides showing a saga or a famous tale is just what you would expect. It enforces the fantasy and legend aspect that I love about SW (and germanic/norse mythology in general).

The chariot is a nice touch because it allows me to make that hunting chariot Wodan style. It is really growing on me.

At first I hated the Stormwolf but now I found a very simple conversion idea (and I mean stupidly simple) that makes it look like a Dragonboat, which immediately made is the most awesome flyer ever for me. All I am missing is a head of Jörmungandr to make it perfect and I'll be ready to post it.

The wargear looks very solid and it emphasizes the heroic 1v1 and 1vMany fights.

I read that the SW FOC will include 6 HQ slots and we also have named chars in other FOC slots. Again, I love it a lot!

Overall, I am pumped. I have never ever been so excited and giddy about a release and I am counting the HOURS until Friday, when my Longfang Edition arrives. I am very happy to have returned to my old and trusty SW after having tried most codecies out there.

Those Viking Raiders will be pillaging soon enough now in our FLGS league! :D

Nobody seems as pumped as I am for ignores cover and re-rolls to hit. If this can be put on the LF leader, I don't need to put a rune priest with them any more.

I'm more interested in its potential on a Rune Priest. My own psuedo-Tesla Destructor and twin-linked Ignores Cover Smite? devil.gif

I'm going to have to plunk cash down for a Stormwolf or three. The ability to do aerial insertion of a squad of BCs is just too good to pass up.

Also the new Bjorn/Ven Dread/Murderfang kit is full of awesome bits, and will need to join my stable of Dreadnoughts.

As theres still a lot of questions up in the air, only gonna comment on things i know are happening....

really happy to see bloodclaws, swiftclaws, skyclaws all becoming more competitive points wise. Have a load of skyclaws i never run but these guys will probably see more games now.

The new flyer is cool, may get one to stick a load of bloodclaws inside.

New dreads im really happy with too, agreed that they may not be the most competitive choice ever...but mint looking close combat dreads....yes please!

Gonna wait til i have the codex in my hands to see what the final verdict on a lot of questions/loadouts could be...but with 3000-4000 points of wolves in a box at home, pretty sure i should be able to come up with something half decent :)

Tentatively, I'm only worried about one thing: is it possible to buy eternal warrior anymore? Or are we like Dark Angels, forever stuck to our special characters for eternal warrior instead of being able to customize our wolf lords into TOUGH, lean and mean fighting machines? I know Thunderwolves and bikes will give us a pseudo eternal warrior with T5, but still seems a lot more restricting to our builds now.

Also I wonder if Bjorn will have more tricks that prevent him from being blown up by some well placed rear shots apart from his 5++.

A lot of our unique wargear and sagas are pretty much gone, sadly.  Including our ability to give EW to heroes.  We have had a lot of flavor removed in favor of points reduction and some better mechanics.  I'm watching posts on Dakka and it's a roller coaster ride of emotions about the Codex!

My plan remains the same though:  Never leaving the Wolves.

Sorry Onyx, I think I'll avoid checking out the rumour thread until I get the codex in my own hands.

Oh well, thanks to the nerfing of smash, less likely for MCs to squish our Thunderlords in one shot. Joined with Thunderwolves, means plenty of tough ablative wounds so the Thunderlord build may still be viable.

I really hope Arjac and Lone wolves retains EW though.

Aye, the removal of EW option is a shame, but then im pretty sure we were the only chapter still able to put that an a normal non-named lord/captain etc - used to enrage my flatmate that we could do that whereas he had 1 option in his whole codex when playing either DA or Sons of Terra.

TO be fair, we do at least get that initiative reducing armour, which although may not save us from a smash attack, will at least mean we get to lay down some hurt before dying

all depends on points costs though, shall have to wait til i buy the codex ;)

But aye hope these two keep it - wouldnt be surprised at a slight nerf to LWs though

I think if nothing else this codex is really exciting for players like myself. As mentioned previously, the ability to forge these narrative battles in which these fierce warriors are calling out and challenging their adversaries!! It's exactly like I would imagine a group of legendary space vikings to play out!! I love the more cartoonish edge of this game. I prefer the paint style and I live for the fluff. With unbound and the new kits we are getting, I am one happy Son of Russ!!

I have mentioned in other threads, I am an enormous fan of the new Logan/Sled kit!! The sculpt is so heroic, and I especially love the way his hair flows up and over the top of his armor. OH!! And the golden wolf skull atop his armor??!! HELL YEAH!! Two new TW models really make the kit for me, as I am excited to see if they can be fitted with saddles and mounted to offer additional poses to the range of GW models. As a Loganwing player this new kit is like a blessing from the Allfather, himself!! I am not joking when I say, I am losing sleep off of the thought's of this kit in my hand.

Dreadnought kit. Wow!! The Bjorn is so detailed and ornate, like it should be for housing the oldest marine. And he most revered.

MurderFang is also a really sweet looking possibility, really all three are!! I like the dual crystal claw thing he's got going on.

The Ven Dread's head is right off IQ's amazing model and is also befitting of a venerated warrior of our brotherhood.

Stormfang allows me to deliver TDAWG into my opponents face. Simple. Blunt. Destructive. Just like I like it.

I have to say that I think both this model release and new book is going to bring the wolves to the forefront a lot more for both the serious and fluff players alike!! Really nothing but ecstatic about this release!!

End of Line

I like most of the new stuff , I like the new dreadnaughts as well . Always liked them but the new kit is great .

only thing i am not sure about is the chariot for logan grimnar . it will only be a week before someone does a santa clause conversion on him then we will have xmass themed spacwolves popping up every where .

the horror :(

Nope, codex marines certainly can. Both with The Shield Eternal and Gorgon's Chain (Clan Raukaan), relics true, but the later doesn't even use up a weapon slot. But the option is there to have an EW Captain/Chapter Master. Therefore I feel perfectly justified in calling its removal for us BS.

Eh, I'd say reserve calling BS unless Grey Knights and/or Blood Angels get an eternal warrior relic.

Anyone else in the forum think we can start to draft an FAQ request set of questions soon?

Wolf Tooth Necklace: 15 to 30 or more points to get them back, and on whom?

Eternal Warrior Relic: is this an oversight that we cannot get one, or is the design intent the Frostblade Relic shall be the replacement?

Wolf Tail Talisman: it could be an expensive Deny the Witch roll modifier, of either +1 or +2 to all DtW rolls, about 15 to 30 points, or more, if needed.

---

There will be others, sure, however some of the questions are already starting to form in my mind due to either oversight errors or intentional omissions on the Codex writers' part(s).

This also seems like the place to start this idea right now.

I suppose everyone gets their share of BS. It's what I call losing dozer blade on C:SM Land Raiders. Curious though, does the SW LR still have the option for dozer blade?
