Fire Golem
I get paid this week, and I wanna get cracking on my pre heresy stuff. However I don't know what the best starting option would be. I'm going to do Alpha Legion, Night Lords and Raven Guard. I can either buy Extermination or Massacre, or buy the small army list book and 10 tacticals (probably NL, or maybe AL). Which would be the better way to go, dyou think? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294717-help-me-get-started/ Share on other sites
Grotsmasha
If you love you fluff you can't go past the big books, if you're super keen to get gaming, grab the small book and some models. Fire Golem
Well, I love the fluff, but I also wanna get cracking on some models. Either way it'll be a while before I do any gaming. Russ Brother 92
Personally I'd recommend the big books, I spend far more tine simply reading (and re-reading) then for it NOT to be worth it, must have spent a good 20+ hours reading each book slowly so far as the various fluff inside is brilliant, makes for some great inspiration in terms of modelling and is a lovely storyline to cover some time. However if I knew I had a solid core group around me who already played (or wanted to) then I'd have got the little books plus some figures. Fire Golem
I might be able to stretch to a big book and 5 tacticals, but wouldn't be able to get guns or shoulder pads. Brother Captain Lucian
I would get the book, and then later start ordering marines with all the associated gadgets. ImpiousSmart
Don't just grab 5 tacticals for the sake of it. Just get one of the big books. By the time you've digested all the fluff, you might well have changed what you want to do as a force entirely. Fire Golem
Which one then? I dunno whether to get Massacre or Extermination Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294717-help-me-get-started/#findComment-3767845 Share on other sites
betrayer41
big books for sure, big books and tac marines for AL Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294717-help-me-get-started/#findComment-3767847 Share on other sites
Moonstalker
I'll buck the trend and say get the two red books and skip getting any models for now. You're going to need them regardless of the army you choose. Later on get whatever book has fluff for the Legion you (think you might) want and explore that. Fire Golem
I know that I do need those red books, but where I have BattleScribe to build lists on, it almost feels like I don't, and seeing as I won't be playing for a while, I'd rather get something new? If that makes sense. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294717-help-me-get-started/#findComment-3767930 Share on other sites
MakoBoy88
I'm in the same boat mate. Although I actually have all the books I can, but no models. So my decision is coming down to what models I want to buy in order to start my force. I'm playing Salamanders and I think I will start with some Bog standard Matines with the chest upgraded and shoulder pads, some command upgrades and some Phobos Bolters. Get 10 done and crack on. Brother Captain Lucian
I would start out with the book that contains the legion which your most fond of. Judging from your posts, then I would get Extermination for the AL. @MakoBoy88, the best way to start off your force is 10-20 bog standard marines with shoulders and command. As you already wrote :) I would also add a "special char" or unit of choice, as a reward for painting your squad. Something like a praetor, or apothecary or 5 Pyroclasts / Firedrakes. I find that having something to look forward to paint, helps me along. All depending on the budget of course! MakoBoy88
@Brother Captain Lucian. Totally agree man, did think I would give them. Rhino, and that would be my present. But I think another infantry model would be better suited. So maybe a praetor or something. Need to hash a list out before that. Any suggestions? Fire Golem
Brother Captain Lucian, thanks :) I think that's what I'll do, cos it's got RG in it too, and I was looking at IW and IF at one point. Whereas Massacre only has NL, and WB to a certain extent, but I hate the IH and don't really like the Salamanders, so I'll get that later I think. Fire Golem
Right I've decided I'm definitely gonna get either Massacre or Extermination, but now I can't decide which. Massacre is the first one of the two, so has the start of the Dropsite Massacre in it, and I'm really liking the NL atm. However, only 2 of the legions in it really interest me (NL and WB). Extermination on the other hand, is the second part, but I'm doing AL and Night Lords so I'll need both, and all 4 legions in Extermination interest me. Sorry for asking so many questions, it's just a lot of money to spend so I wanna be sure before I pull the trigger. Brother Captain Lucian
Extermination, its an easy choice. it has Iron Warriors in it, duh. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/294717-help-me-get-started/#findComment-3769007 Share on other sites
Fire Golem
Yeah I really like all 4 legions from that book. Wish the NL were in it too though, that would be much easier. ImpiousSmart
If you're just starting out, I'm assuming you still have okay internal organs. I don't see why you can't just do like the rest of us - auction a few off and you'll have enough for both books and at least 500 points. Millicant
I'm going to continue the trend and vote for Extermination. Great book, you won't be disappointed. Since the big books are fluff-heavy, it's best to pick the one that has legions you are interested in. I know that I do need those red books, but where I have BattleScribe to build lists on, it almost feels like I don't, and seeing as I won't be playing for a while, I'd rather get something new? If that makes sense. You'll still need/want the two smaller books eventually if you plan to play games. While the Battlescribe catalogues will help you make lists, you definitely need the books to make LEGAL lists. I'm glad you're using it though!
