ZONKEY
Hi just getting into the fluff of the dark angels and just wondering other than the lion being a master tactician why was his gene seed used to create the first legion post thunder warriors (I don't know if he created the custodes before the Astarte's) ? Grotsmasha
Some one had to be first.....and it just so happened that The Lion was the Primarch in the first incubator. It really is that simple. Grotsmasha
Sorry, kinda skipped the Custodes comment, but yes, the Custodes were first. In the scene in False Gods/Galaxy in Flames where Horus has been stabbed and is being mislead by Chaos in his dream, Constantin and Custodians bust in when the Primarchs are scattered. JeffJedi
Well if the Emperor engineered them to grow up with certain traits then being good at tactics and implacable is a pretty good start. If you look at the first founding chapters it's easy to imagine the Emperor making a checklist of what he wanted: Dark Angels -good at tactics and implacable Emperor's Children -excellence and striving for self improvement Iron Warriors -siege breaking and fortress making White Scars -fast attack specialty Space Wolves -savagery but tempered but restraint Imperial Fists -extremely good a defense That's just the first few but you could go on down to Horus, the replacement leader and Magnus the replacement Psyker. Who knows what the Emperor could have done without having to lead or be on the golden throne himself. TheForgottenAngel
We will know for sure once FW delves into the 1st Legion but I doubt it's as simple as first Primarch in the vat. It could be that the Lion's strengths as a combined arms tactician was what was needed for the 1st due to the Emperor knowing they would operate largely on their own without other Legion support. Gillyfish
The Dark Angels (or the First as they were originally) were the first Legion to be created and operated on their own for a while, also acting as the Emperor's bodyguards. However, there is some contradictory information (Betrayal by Forge World) which suggests that 20 companies were originally established and then developed their own traits based on their gene seed. Those 20 companies became the core of the Legions. So it may be that the Dark Angels being an independent unit before the other Legions may not have been for that long a period of time and might have solely occurred on Terra.
