Brazen Claws - A Grimdark Tale - Feel No Pain

Smoke and ceramite showered off the Brazen Claw. The close range fire propelled him back, feet cutting grooves in the ashen street. Shattered by the impact, the Brazen Claw immediately pushed into the onslaught, bringing his arm up to shield himself from the explosive rounds. The sacrifice was calculated, as the target he presented was the left side of his warplate, whose strength wrapped bionic limbs of steel and iron. He did not feel his left arm tear away from his body, nor did the horrendous wound slow his relentless assault.

The son of Curze was still screaming obscenities and bolt rounds when the Talusian long-knife entered the soft webbing under his arm. The Brazen Claw struck with the force of an industrial piston, blade puncturing all three of the traitor’s lungs and forcing the Night Lord onto his back. The knife was torn out in less than a heartbeat, just enough time for the Night Lord to see a silver eyed helm smash into his own. The sound of the head-butt was that of a thunderclap and cobweb cracks spread across ruby lenses set in midnight clad.

Dying arms fought back and flailed without strength. Breath was replaced by heartsblood.

Brother Ormac of the Brazen Claws stared through silver eyes at the traitor beneath him. Its pain was curious. Its frail body was betraying him.

Sheathing the blade with his remaining hand, Ormac unholstered his pistol and placed it against the traitor’s eye.

“Your flesh is weak.”

Oh yes, this marine is perfect. The weathering is outstanding!

I have one thing that stood out, and that's only in your background, so please, please feel free to ignore this, but I would have thought that your Brazen Claw wouldn't have sacrificed his bionic arm. Not only because of his being an Iron Hand successor, but also because getting his real arm blown off would mean more bionics. I also realise that this is to tie into your model, so really his bionics would have to be damaged. Of course, this is just something that I maybe have read too much into, and has no real impact smile.png

Looking forward to more, your logs never disappoint.

I understand that, it was just something that stood out for me. It may be something for Candleshoes to think about, how far into the 'Flesh is Weak' mentality his Claws are, and how that has been affected by both the after-effects of both the death of Ferrus and the Heresy.

The Brazen Claw is simply superb mate thumbsup.gif Love the battle damage, and the weathering is perfect.

Are you still going to go with the gunslinger/wild west theme? Would be a very different and interesting take on an Iron Hands Successor.

... I will end you for this insult.

The 8th don't have a lot to do besides hold grudges... so watch your dark corners at night...

On the flipside, that dude is gorgeous! His colors are perfectly muted and the gross green sludge on his base is really unique. Keep this business up!

... but quit killing off my legion. There aren't a lot of us left :P

Yes! :yes:

The effect is great! And I really like how you dulled both colours... The bright version never did it for me, but this guy is truly awesome.

Not that we expected anything less... ;)

@Demon
The Morragul HH background is a very cool nod towards the Red Talons and Brazen Claws, and I like how Alan Bligh left a lot of room for imagination for how and who broke and separated to form the second founding chapters. Nothing is ironclad officially stated, but he gives enough for us to include bits and pieces. References will definitely be popping up in the future. Though, the army will take place during the 4 years after the end of their failed crusade (Present 40k timeline), just before the 13th Black Crusade, where they essentially bring down two severely burned and damaged strike cruisers onto a frontier world, in the beginings of a makeshift, and adopted by force new homeworld. This allows for a single influx of recruits, reorganization, and new traditions, before Abaddon breaks through the gates of Hell. The story, though not the founding of the Chapter any longer, will be the rebuilding of one.

@Jaspcat
Your packs are in the mail, and I can't wait to see one of your Jaspcat original creations in deep weathered Brazen Claw colours! You really outdid yourself in the creating of that mini.

@kobrakei

Thanks! The weathering was actually terrifying to do, because after all those pigments go on dry, and everything on the models becomes way too muted, the binding agent goes on (which is both shiny and takes FOREVER to dry) and you are left with a shiny, wet model that you are just praying will turn out well in the end. Glad to know the risk paid off. About the bionics, the idea was that Ormac (and all other Brazen Claws) follow very, very closely to the teachings of the original Iron Hands (ex: in the camp of, during the Moirae Schism, they just killed everyone in their chapter who held the ideals). They know very precisely how strong and how much their limbs can withstand, compared to their flesh counterparts, and Ormac is able to make that call in room to room streetfighting, where the fire exchanges are done in such close range, he takes the punishment on the bionic half of himself, to survive through it and land a killing blow. The mentality of flesh weakness will come to a head though, as not only have the Brazen Claws experienced the death and failure of their father and his flesh, but they have experienced their own failures, through the death of their world and the faltering of their bionics during the crusade. I think its these failures that will bring them out of the eye, back to realspace, to determine a new path and a new strength. What they did before, obviously wasn't working - and from there, the seizing of a population for replenishment and rebuilding (which will be the Frontier World, Valance). I see them reigning in their bionic obsession a little bit.

@Spaced Hulk
Thanks! Yes, most definitely will be sticking with a few touches of a frontier theme - the idea is that during 995.M41 - 999.M41 they throw out all past ideals and weakness and build new, forward looking and thinking only. This has them adopting a new world, a new set of cultures, and heavy reflection on where they fit in the Imperium of Man. Valance, the frontier planet they wreck two strike cruisers on (as a new Fortess Monastery), will be a source of new recruits, and the integration of many new customs. Their old, destroyed world Talus IV, seems like a naturally cold and wet place. Since their utter detestation of weakness in any form, I think it is not too far of a stretch to forsake the old world, for a complete commitment to the new. Due to the rebuilding and nod to old Talus, their clan names and symbols will be Talusian in nature, so I'm thinking an onyx Kraken inside a ivory sprocket or something, for their right pauldron:

@Flint
No word of a lie, it was him fighting a Black Legionnaire, then I switched it to Night Lord after sifting through some parts of your thread!

@Death & Barabbas

Thanks, SCC's thread was a very good source of inspiration.

@Captain Semper
Though it isn't a son of the Lion, thanks Semper!

@Bass & Mol
The choice to foccus on them after a series of near total losses seemed a cool idea, as did the few years of rebuilding before the 13th Black Crusade. Whether they can evolve and move past their recriminations, that still remains to be seen!

Its been a fair while since I got the chance to read through your new works. I must admit it is a little sad to see you no longer following a Son of the Angel chapter, but that is easily made up for by that absolutely stunning Brazen Claw. Sharp quartered painting, gorgeous weathering. This is excellent, my friend. I look forward to seeing more.

The new guy is an interesting concept, one I am sure you can pull off. I am glad you gave found something that inspires you, as that pInt scheme deserves to be repeated. What I like about your background is that they are operating outside Imperial jurisdiction, even more so then a usual chapter. I would imagine the inquisition would not look kindly on the failed crusade and these actions. What is also good, is that your brazen claws may not be the whole of the chapter, leaving other brazen claws out there. Handy if gw turn round and create a different background for them.

I am just reading the background on Autek Mor, clan Morragul is tempting...
