@Noc

Thanks, and thanks for your input in helping with the change over from wings to bionics.

@Flint

The lower half of the face will be all grimacy and terminatory - though, had a few people say to stick that head onto the leaping gunslinger marine (who currently has the sterngaurd vet head). We'll have to see!

@Demon

Yes, there is a lot of interesting possibilities in them essentially spending 4 years in isolation, seclusion, and completely outside Imperial law. Apparently in the official canon fluff, their 2nd company abandoned the crusade and dropped into real-space, and have been acting and fighting with and in the Imperium as though they are the only survivors (they were the ones who showed up at Medusa 5!)... I can only imagine how the Chapter Master and remaining captains see the cowards/traitors/deserters of the 2nd...

As for an update, I finished laying down the sludge and mud layer to the Ironclad's feet. Simple half half mixture of PVA and Baking Soda.

I went this time and added a few boot-prints in the still wet mixture, so when the mud and wet come on, they should pool into the footprints and have a interesting look to them, as the Ironclad strides over them.

@Demon

Thanks - I've always just done regular static grass or sand for the last 14 years... decided to be wild and crazy and change things up lol.

Goal is to finnish the ironclad dreadnought up this weekend, and allow all that surface area to just soak up the weathering, chips, dents and dings. Partway through putting just the basecoat onto the dread, but I though I would post this up, just to laugh at how bright the colours go on. The weathering goes on so matte and dark, the dread kind of looks like a clown shoe at this stage! Oh well. The mud, footprints and base turned out well and exceeded my expectations, razorwire will run through the legs as well.

My watch bits finally also came in, and I decided on the clan symbol, which will be showcased first on the dread. Red field, brass cog, with a white kraken above it. It will go on that left panel - the chapter symbol will go on the right. Veteran mark to be on the right leg - kneepads... not sure yet.

Seeing him fully assembled...I kinda want one to be posed like Pedro Kantor but with a wrist mounted assault or auto cannon....

Great stuff.  I've never given the Brazen Claws a huge amount of thought but your opening graphic really sucked me in.  I like it when people take a Chapter thats had less attention and are really able to draw out details that make them spectcular.

It's clear you've given a huge amount of thought to this in it's different iterations and your both your painting and your writing are very enjoyable.

He looks pretty sweet. Though for some reason the first thing I thought of when seeing him was this:

*snip*

Khrangar

Oh I remeber that episode. You made me laugh, sir. :D

Keep up the good work, Candleshoes. Can't wait to see him finished.

@Slipstreams

Posing a dread like the Kantor model would be awesome, especially that stable, but still moving pose - if I ever get my hands on a Iron Hands contemptor, I will pose him up like that.

@Asamodai

Thanks, I always found some of the most interesting logs on here from people who take something with skeletal fluff, and fill in the gaps themselves.

@Khrangar

That's terrifying...

@The Yak

Thanks, your work with your Raptors is an inspiration and a source of constant referal, especially with your painting style. I feel like I always learn something new when I look at your work.

@Noctus & Kael

It's been a while since I have painted anything bigger than a marine... I forgot how much longer it takes to paint so many flat surfaces!

The dread is getting there, I wasn't expecting to have to paint so many coats onto it, especially for the colours to be even. I will make sure to post up what he looks like before his weathering, as a before and after.

I had a few people contact me with some bionics photos, and ideas to grow in a lot more rough and tumble wounds on marines - even whole sections of ceramite peeled back, to show actual skin, with section burnt off and machine bionics peaking through. There is a lot of potential, especially if I go this more ragged and wounded feel, so I have gone out and rented quite a few movies for some inspiration, which I can then pull ideas from.

The idea for the next marine, will be that he has been glanced in the upper torso by a large peice of Iron Warrior artillery shrapnel. It will be gorey to say the least.

I'll leave you guys with some of the art ideas people sent (aparently the Terminator Salvation artbook has some good material)... certainly enough to get the old skull junk clanking.

Oh man that second to last picture is wicked! Definitely inspired, thanks Candleshoes!

As for the dread, I love how casually aggressive he's posed, if that makes sense!

Looking forward to more brother!

The weathering on that marine is superb sir! Really digging that Dread as well nice conversion ^^

The first piece of Terminator concept art is pretty inspiring, can't wait to see some battered and broken marines. Keep up the awesome work!

A new year and some new models.

Things have been fairly quiet around here, but behind the scenes, some very exciting developments have occured on the project.

Over the holidays, I have been able to have a few conversations with someone who has their hand directly involved with the Brazen Claws and their background. They have verbally painted an incredible picture of Old Talus, and the very difficult 10,000 years the Brazen Claws have endured.

I have been given permission to include some of these fully fleshed out ideas in this project log, so please take this post as a bit of a Mark II. There is such a rich and rewarding (and tragic) story that surrounds these sons of the Iron Gorgon, and I can't wait to show you some models that have been inspired by it. Due to this, my themes and the overall direction of the project is going to change signifigantly.

I will save the wordy bits for later, but just know that it may or may not include house sized wooly mammoths...

I also was able to play quite a few games over the holidays, and one thing I noticed was that the dark, grimey colours I did on my original test marine, just looked very very flat on the table top, even though it looks great close up. I am thinking of changing the scheme and not using the weathering powders, so that the colours pop more. These two models will be the tests for the less dirty scheme. Also, bought some better basing supplies - will be going for a cracked desert, trench floorboards and wire mesh theme, in an attempt to have the brighter base even out the darker models.

First up is an Assualt Terminator. I didn't want the bionics on this one to be really overt, so I went with the very unsettling face and terminator jaw, allowing the older armour to shine, and that beautiful flat shield surface stand out.

Also, anyone else of the opinion that the Grey Knight thunderhammers are just fantastic? No wires or tubes, just that giant haft that looks like it could take the wall out of a solid brick :cuss house.

Next up is a tactical marine. Bulked up and taking full advantage of that bigger base, having him stepping down was a lot of fun. I kept him simple in order to let the new take on the scheme be the focus. Man I love those Forgeworld bionic right arms...

that entire post is full of wonderful work! The terminator face and thunderhammer, and the tacticals' entire existence are both full of character, and a joy to look at! can't wait to see them painted, bright, dark, or whichever way you do. biggrin.png

Huzzah! Great to see you back to work on the Brazen Claws, man. First Midnight brings back his Flesh Eaters, Molotov starts a new project with his Castigators, now this? I think I should get back to work on my loyalists now. :P
