Brazen Claws - A Grimdark Tale - Feel No Pain

Thanks for the warm welcome back everyone!

I did some more fooling around with my new basing … those craft stores are going to be the death of me! I think I am on the right track for that desert trenches feel, and I am super excited to give GW’s new technical basing ‘paint’ Agrellan Earth a try on them (it is the paint that you put on, let dry for an hour, then turns into cracked desert effects). Some say I go overboard on the bases … but the way I see it, if GW is giving us the green light for bigger bases, I am going to take full advantage of it!

Here is a Veteran or maybe a character for the Claws… not sure how to arm him, but all those flat surfaces on his armour make me think the quarter scheme will look very good on him. Also, he is sporting one of my favorite heads that GW makes. Barely a scrap of humanity left in it.

@Kurama & Argent Aquila

Thanks so much. I always thought the Iron Hands and their successors had a lot of potential for cool bits and pieces that made them stand out and be a little different.

@Commissar Molotov

Thanks Mol, it means a lot coming from you. Your passion and creativity has been off the hook lately!

@Noctus

Come over to the dark side … er … loyal side!

@BassWave

It is the Dark Vengeance Dark Angel Tactical Sergeant’s head --- I carved out his jaw below the nose and replaced it with a fantasy skeleton jaw from their regiment box. They are fairly good when matching up to their 40k counterparts, the hope is that I can do some other subtle facial bionics using the same process.

@jimbo13

It looks like a lot, but there are very few parts on marines where you actually have to paint straight lines, really only on their helmet and chest is it really noticeable. Lots of weathering also helps make your eyes just assume it is straight as well!

@Flint

Thanks – I had the potential to pick up one of their new Gorgon terminator boxes… but I ended up passing and deciding to try and make my own. Stealing parts shamelessly from the Immortals kit really helps.

@Captain Semper & Jujara

I’m interested too in where the paint will take them… in my head I feel like all my models should look like they have been run over by a car in terms of the mud and grime… maybe bright isn’t the way to go and I should just stick to the weathered look.

Nice figure - very evocative posing already. I would suggest that he has a ranged weapon of some sort in the hand closest to us, and a chainsword in the other, held low, ready to use. I like the idea of him advancing under relentless fire, weapon raised, picking off his foes callously.

Thanks for the compliment - work is hitting me pretty hard at the moment but I hope to have an update up soon!

Thanks for the advice on the pose - I had some people ask if I was planning on building the army to use the Iron Hands successor rules and character, found in Imperial Armour 10's Sons of Medusa bits. Some of the interesting additions would be the toughness 5 veteran devastator marines (with loads of bionics) and the Toughness 6 Iron Thane Vaylund Cal, with his thunderhammer, servo harness, and 40mm base size due to his bionics. As I am one of those people who is hopelessley won over by the rule of cool, I thought this would be an excellent set of bones to use in determining where the army will go. Fun and unique character and devastators, as well as the only Iron Hand successor out there with actual rules... sign me up.

For my version of Vaylund Cal, the True Monster himself, Patent Null, Iron Thane of Clan Nullbuilt --- I think I might use the previous character/vet torso and legs and build off of it. His base is practically hanging off the new 32mm bases, so the jump to 40mm will be easy, and with a 2 handed hammer and a full servo harness, he should bulk out quite well. Here is a blue tacked shot of how the arms should be angled with the hammer, so the harness can fit around it. Hands will have to stay, but I will be replacing the stock arms with pure machine ones.

Since last posting, I have been finnishing the Ironclad, and also am almost finnished the Tactical Marine... the only bits left to nail down are the exact symbols to use for the Clan Markings, and the Talusian runes for squad numbers.

Here is what I plan on using for the Clan Company Symbol for Nullbuilt, fitting in with the themes Joe Parrino brought forward for Talus IV: a world of ice, mist ridden forests and giant oceans - a monster of the deep (markings will be in white):

Here is the "Talusian Numeric Runes" I plan on using instead of regular numbers to designate squads (markings will be in white). Some of you might recognize it, as it is a form of horse branding - But it also is logic based which fits the techno-barbarian Iron Hands themes, but is simple enough to originate from barbaric tribes on an ice world:

Clan symbol for right shoulder, Talusian Squad Marking on left knee, Soon to be created "Campaign Badge" on side of left greave, specialist markings on left or right hands.
