The Retconned Legion...

'Time can be rewritten' - attributed to Thed Oktor, M.2

I've decided to jump on board the Horus Heresy rollercoaster, but with a couple of slight differences. Firstly i'm not made of money, so i've been sticking with the usual GW plastics so far, begging Mk 6 parts off friend and foe alike.

Second, well, i've not chosen a legion. Well not a canon one at least.

For the last few years, i've been sticking to one chapter for my Space Marine fix. I don't like playing common armies, so i chose the least popular chapter i could find which has probably led you to correctly guess: It's the Rainbow Warriors.

Way, way, way back, when the Horus Heresy was just a twinkle in the design studios eye and Space Marines were just guys with cool gear, the Rainbow Warriors were one of the Space Marine legions. In fact they were a first founding Legion, that were the primogenitors of most of the Space Marine forces that had colours in their name.

So when it came to choosing what to collect, with my distaste for following the herd, the Rainbow Warriors came up again.

I've begun work on an alternate history of 30-40k, where the Rainbow Warriors remained one of the founding legions. I've chosen the Ultramarines to be replaced, so i will be endeavouring to flesh out the background of the new XIII Legion and their Primarch Joffrey Haayes (and if you recognise that name, hello fellow child of the '80's)

So enough waffle, some pictures:

Brother Arnau. Note the defaced honour marking on the left shoulder pad trim. Originally a stylised eye symbol granted to Astartes who fought alongside the Warmaster Horus at Ullanor, the recipients chose to deface or remove the honour marking once news of the Warmasters treachery spread.

Joffrey Haayes

In all seriousness, I've been wanting to try to get the Rainbow Warriors into the Heresy for ages sad.png I had considered making them a Second Founding Chapter, much like Chapters such as the Flesh Tearers, but I couldn't think of a convincing way of doing it. I hadn't thought of outright substitution of another Legion though.

In any case, I'll be watching this very closely. Always good to see another son of Prism on the board! happy.pngthumbsup.gif

Recently, the idea that the Rainbow Warriors were actually marines absorbed* by the Ultras from a lost legion was thrown out discussing some of Arctic Paladin's projects. So this makes me happy.

*I am aware the absorption was just alleged.

Neat idea, I must confess I have a soft-spot for the Rainbow Warriors. smile.png You weren't tempted to have them as Legio II or XI then?

I decided to go for a direct replacement of the Ultramarines for a few reasons. First, i'm no where near as talented at conversions and scratchbuilds as yourself, so i'm relying on the eventual Guilleman release to provide the foundation for Joffrey, Second, i've seen the work done by others on here to craft their own 2nd and 11th Legions, and i can't compete with that!

Lastly it's also to annoy a regular opponent who spent the entirety of 2nd edition to the 6th edition Space Marine codex telling me the Rainbow Warriors were no more and gone from canon. He plays Ultramarines...

A few little updates, the first are some unwelcome addtions to the force, in honour of this weekends releases

After betrayal spread throughout the Imperium, the Wolf King dispatched his warriors to keep watch over those sons still professing to be loyal to the Emperor.

Ulfur pack and their Vaerangi Harald Keksi would fight along side the Scions of Prism, all the while alert for any sign of treachery.

A Calceum-pattern Land Speeder, attached to the 99th Company. With their supercharged engine, the design required open ventinaltion to the fusion core to prevent overheating.

With it's stripped down armour, Calceum-Pattern pilots relied on the speed and maneuverability of their speeders to avoid damage. As more and more engagements with Astartes took place, the older patterns would be abandoned in favour of slower, more heavily armoured patterns.

Just a small update on my ongoing efforts on the Rainbow Warriors legion, presenting Matthias the 'Iron Clad', Chapter Master of the 9th Rainbow Warriors Chapter 'The Bloody Nine'.

Chapter Master Matthias was known to his men as the 'Iron Clad'. Armoured in custom Tactical Dreadnaught Armour, it was fondly said that no Xenos could ever breach his wargear and bring him down. At the Battle of Prism, the sad truth of that statement was shown, as the hero was brought low by the treacherous bolt fire of the Word Bearers.

Is that watermarked date a malfunction in the camera? Not that this is a criticism - I'm just... curious (it's probably just the wrong date, looking closely at certain bitz and the Chapter Master's base, as those parts were certainly not around seven years ago). Anyway, it's good to see Aquilanus happy to meet a fellow Rainbow Warrior. ;)

Yeah it's a problem with the camera. Sadly i don't really have access to a TARDIS.

' "What price victory?" - Attributed to Primarch Joffrey Haayes, XIII Legion. From 'Annals of Unity' by Scrivenor Rojan Anphredi'

After the retreat from Prism, vaults long sealed beneath the Great Peak on Pochutec were opened. Devastating weapons, long forbidden from use by Haayes were issued to specialist squads. These 'Death Strike' units risked the use of such weaponry, desperate for any advantage they might provide against Horus' traitors.

Just a quick update with a Destroyer squad i threw together out of spare bits. And i also had a nice surprise in the post this morning...

After the fall of Prism, the Scout Auxilia of the Rainbow Warriors would become ever more vital. Dispatched across the length and breadth of Bifrost to gather reconnaissance on the Warmaster's activities, these small groups would often be the first line of defense against the traitor Legions.

After the heavy losses of Prism, the lives of Battle Brothers were even more precious. It was not uncommon to see Apothecaries dispatched along with scouts.

Just thought i'd provide a shot of where my Heresy-Era Rainbow Warriors currently stand as an army

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FQHyqNAHnSE/VAbo9StLUwI/AAAAAAAAAwI/J2_IoxeiXoc/s1600/rwhha2.jpg

So that's a Scout squad and Destroyer squad done. Still need to finish off my first Tactical squad. Who'd have thought 20 marines would take so long?

The benefit of using GW plastic kits as much as i can, is that i have plenty of leftovers to add to these guys

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9Jn88jexHN8/VAbo-WPnROI/AAAAAAAAAwQ/rWiOhaDiFrc/s1600/rwa1.jpg

My 40k Rainbow Warriors. They actually came first in the scheme of things, i chose the Chapter solely because i don't like using popular armies, it bugs the heck out of me when i play Blood Angels vs Blood Angels etc. So i figured nobody local would pick the Sons of Prism.

There aren't many of us Globally to be honest laugh.png

Nice armies smile.png They have reminded me that I need 1.5 Assault squads before I finish my Forth Company. I'd also like some Terminators too (the ones I do have are on 30mm bases for my Space Hulk game) and some heavy vehicles like the Land Raider smile.png
