Stormfang mod - Viper pattern

Hello fellow Wolves - I've posted the full WIP for this in the Forge, but thought I'd post here too in case anyone was thinking of converting the new flyer

I did a fairly simple conversion by moving the wings to the lower engines, and adding a vertical tail fin. I had the idea after looking at the Viper on Battlestar Galactica :)

To add the vertical tail fin, i used one of the canards that are meant to be on the forward hull. I didn't want to add these anyway so I just filed the bottom of one flat and pinned it to the roof. The roof has a inset section where the air intake is supposed to go, so took the two halves of the air intake and chopped the sides off, so I just had the base of it and glued it in place. I then had to file it flat and drill two holes for the pins

To lower the wings, I added a small strip of plastic from the bottom of a snap fit mini, and glued it to the gap in the underside of the wing where it glues to the hull. I then glued it in place to the lower engine with the help of a pin. With the strip of plastic, there is plenty of surface area for the glue to take hold. The upper engine has some plastic ribs to support the wings so these were filed off.

This is the finished result - quite a simple conversion but I think with the wings in the lower position it looks much better, and gets away from the dogs head look. I also thing it looks a bit more streamlined without the forward fins/canards on the side of the hull

It's a really nice kit. Easy to put together, plenty of weapon options and there are tons of wolf bits and icons that you can add. I've avoided adding any shields, pelts or chain totems as to be honest I imagine these getting frazzled during atmospheric entry. They are perfect for ground vehicles though, and you get a lot of them smile.png
Here is the WIP which I'll be updating it as i continue to paint it:
Cheers

love it, if only the wings could be reversed some how, i hate GW's lack of aerodynamic understanding

and just saying....its gone from looking like a wolfs head to a pelican, still prefer a pelican over a wolf head though, at least they fly

There are actually multiple aircraft, both commercial and military, that use forward swept wing configurations. They've not worked out all the kinks hence proliferation is really low, but it is not an entirely impossible setup (as opposed to the total wing surface area required for sufficient lift...).

talking in reference to super sonic flight requiring swept wings to prevent the wings from tearing off.

if the argument is they are made from adamantium which is strong enough to oppose those tearing forces then you would use a standard straight wing.

however you will still have a poor drag co-efficient.

In point of fact, Haakon, the real issue with forward-swept wings is stability in flight. The drag coefficient is actually *lower* with a forward-swept wing, due to laminar flow. Look up the Grumman X-29 program for more details. If we're going to nitpick about aerodynamics, the real problem isn't wing sweep, it's wing *cross section.* Flat square edged slabs of metal don't actually provide much lift...

Back on topic, Cyrox, that conversion is boss. Nice application of an idea!

Regardless of wings, aerodynamic shape or anything else, this thing is outfitted with something like 16 individual engines (some of which appear to only provide upward thrust) and anti-grav plating. Combine that with engines that probably produce obscene levels of thrust for their sizes, I think it's cool to stay in the air.

On the topic of the actual conversion, it's awesome! My only nit-pick, you might file the small mounting locations for the winglets down to the side of the vehicle on the front. Whether that happens or not, big :tu: Cyrox!

turn them upside down?
